Total Defense -- 291.5 y/g (3rd) Rush Defense -- 90.9 y/g (3rd) Pass Defense -- 200.6 y/g (6th) Yards per Play -- 4.8 (3rd) 3rd Down Conversion -- 37% (10th) Pass Completion % -- 50.7% (1st) Sacks -- 40 (8th) Takeaways -- 30 (5th) Penalties -- 74 (1st)
A couple things that stood out for me: #1 The Jets were the least penalized defense in the league. That's amazing considering the first week of the season. #2 They were only 8 sacks off the league lead. #3 This season the Jets were killed by the big passing plays. 50.7% completion and giving up 200 yards per game in the air does not equal out.
Good on paper but this D was not good this year outside of a few games here and there. I think our D was overrated last yrear and that D was a million times better than the D we trotted out this year. The great thing is these #s are meaningless now, if they play to their ability in postseason we can go a long way.
Sorry...Thought I put it on there. Points Per Game -- 19.0 (6th) Also, Penalty yards was 679 (4th) which equals 9.2 yards per penalty.
As good as those numbers look on paper, I can't ever remember a defense that gave up more big plays on 3rd and long. That killed us all year.
Agreed. However, in two situations did the defense fail in the crucial moments of the game; Cleveland and Houston. The rest of the games they held their ground.
This defense was not nearly as dominant this year. They had some good games, but some really bad games.
I am really surprised to see the low penalty and penalty yrd stat. Seemed like we were getting called for a PI every other drive this season.
They only really had 3 bad games all year; Houston, New England and Chicago. They were dominating that Houston game until 8 minutes to go. New England abused everybody. The Chicago game was interesting. I posted in a different thread about the field conditions and how that played a factor, but still no excuse.
I believe that is true but I couldn't find that stat. Also, last year's stats were inflated a little with late games against TB, Carolina, Buffalo and the JV squads of Indy and Cincy.
They really only had 3-4 good complete games. They couldn't get of the field against Bal They got torched at Miami They got torched by Minny in the 2nd half and allowed them back in it They weren't good in den They nearly blew the Cle game They nearly blew the Hou game They didn't show up at NE(no one did) They got embarrassed in Chicago
What were the vaGiants stats for Sacks? Did having 10 against Cutler skew that? No they didn't. So 5 takeaways yesterday and none in another game all evens out... Jets have pretty impressive stats considering they didn't "feel" dominant this year.
It's hard to complain about the Baltimore game. They gave up 10 points and the TD was gifted on a PI call at the one. You're right that they didn't play "complete" games against MIA, MIN and DEN but in all three, they made the defensive plays to end the game. This was the BIGGEST criticism of the D last year.
This year we had both Buf games, the NE game, the Cincy game so it wasn't too much different as far as garbage time.
