So far obviously this season has been up and down but there are a few key observations to make. 1) The Jets success for the rest of the season lies in the hands of the offensive playcalling (with the new code system) The Jets got caught in the luster of having a top pick rookie QB and got burned. But when the Jets just reign it in and run the ball the majority of the time, with clear communication to Sanchez the Jets put themselves in a position to win. I know it was against the Panthers but the system seemed to work. Rather then putting the Jets D in a position to have to save the day week in and week out, if the Jets continue to minimize pick 6's they look strong. 2) Kerry Rhodes has clearly disappointed up to last week. But the benching of Kerry Rhodes did a few things. #1 it sent a message to the rest of the team that if you don't perform you don't start. #2 it allowed the Jets to get a good look at Eric Smith who IMO has progressed tremendously. #3 may have sparked a fire under kerry's ass. He did storm out of the locker room after his brief comments with the media and has denied certain off the field commitments that may have distracted him. But I think he's starting to realize he's no lock for starter. While I'm happy with his performance last week, they weren't exactly coverage picks. But 2 picks are 2 picks so kudos to Kerry. 3) Special teams - Understandably there is a hole in the return game and I think having Clowney/Smith return kicks is a solid decision. Although it seems to expose the depth at WR having both returning. On top of that Cotchery is returning punts. It is really asking for trouble in the WR core. At the very least J Co should not be returning punts. Give Woodhead a chance here or what about Drew Coleman? You aren't loosing big play potential because frankly which J Co is good and making guys miss and won't shank one he's not going to break it big. J Co was crushed on a hit last week and we all stopped breathing for a minute. That being said here is the playoff picture to date: Division Leaders: Colts - 11 - 0 Bengals - 8 - 3 Chargers - 8 - 3 Patriots - 7 - 3 Wild Cards: Broncos - 7 - 4 Steelers - 6 - 5 In the Hunt: Jaguars - 6 - 5 Ravens - 6 - 5 Dolphins - 5 - 6 Jets - 5 - 6 Titans - 5 - 6 Texans - 5 - 6 If the Jets can keep their side of the street clean the playoffs aren't totally out of the question yet.
The most depressing part is that we will probably miss the playoffs by one or two games and we could have easily won against the Jags, Phins, and Bills. Well, all I really want to see for the rest of the year is Sanchez and Rex Ryan developing into a better quarterback and coach, respectively. I want the Jets to be able to close out and finish games without blowing it in the final minutes. I want to see Braylon Edwards cover the fucking ball when he runs with it. The Jets also have to stop this turnover BS and stop shooting themselves in the foot. And most importantly, the Jets need to win some games. It is quite apparant that if we keep losing, the locker room will be in shambles. We got a sneak preview of this after the Jags/Pats loss.
We will not make the playoffs. This team is far from being playoff-ready. Any "backing-in" we do to get there would most likely result in a first-round exit anyway.
agreed that the playoffs is most likely not going to happen. But crazy things have happened (see 2002). And the way the playoff picture looks its not entirely impossible. A few bounces in the right direction and the jets taking care of business and it COULD happen. With the way this weekends games panned out it certainly keeps the jets in the mix
