nothing new, but all in all a decent summary of whats going on right now. except of course the spelling of every other word and referring to the miami dolphins as the defending "champion," because even if they are any kind of champions it doesnt count because they are the miami dolphins, and last year especially doesnt count when you consider again that they are the miami dolphins and what happened in the first round of the playoffs.
LOL exactly. Suggs did pretty well right out of the box. And that with only starting a few games. He was just brought in as a pass rusher, thus the lack of tackles that year but man did he get to the QB.
He also had 19 solo tackles, 3 PDs and 6 forced fumbles...we would be partying in the street if Gholston had any of those. Oh, he had a pick too.
I can't believe the Jets really plan on going into the season without adding to the roster of receivers. This reminds me of when Kendall left, and they said they would be fine without him, playing guys like Clarke and Bender. How'd that work out?
While I agree it's a hole in our offense, I don't like the comparison to Clarke/Bender. An o-line is only as strong as it's weakest link and that unit is what drives the offense. A big hole in the o-line means your QB is always at risk and under pressure and your running game is going to suffer. It puts a huge burden on every facet of the offense. Missing a top WR just means the passing game may be more difficult. We also have a couple of guys that may be able to fill in and surprise us in Clowney and Brad Smith. I'm not going to hold my breath, but I'm hopeful.
It's that MAY part, and specifically that the same things were said about filling in for Kendall before the season began, that lead me to see a comparison. The party line at the time was not that the team was going to hold its breath, hoping that no one would notice, or something like that. It was very much that they expected Clarke and Bender to get it done. Having a weak corps of receivers means the D can play up and stop the run. The effect is not limited to the passing game.
So you think defenses aren't going to have a safety over a guy like Clowney? I sure hope not ... You can't just ignore a receiver because he's not great. They still have to be covered. Sure you can get into trouble if no receiver demands over the top help and they can bring a safety in the box, but I really think teams are going to have to respect Clowneys speed on the outside. Keller should help put pressure on the safeties too.
That's a valid comparison, definitely. But a sub-par Chansi Stuckey or Brad Smith at the number two spot won't affect Jerricho Cotchery's performance the way a Bender or a Clarke affected Mangold's and Brick's. Willie hit it on the head: it's a unit, only as strong as the weakest link and all that. Don't forget that Anthony Clement didn't help matters much; if the back stays behind to help Clarke, you've still got The Turnstile letting people through. But I honestly feel that our receiving corps is not nearly as frail as it's being made out to be. Cotchery, Keller and Washington are a some of the best receivers in the game at their respective positions. (I'm considering Cotch a number two). EDIT: BTW, this "article" is awful.
