I'm a bit surprised Pittsburgh didn't get a 3rd or 4th round pick. Edit- The performance turned in by Mewelde Moore is probably the reason the loss of Alan Faneca did not net a 3rd or 4th round comp pick.
Who did they lose in free agency to warrant this? They traded players, but I thought that didn't count. They signed a few players, too, so why the hell do they get a 3rd, 5th and a 6th?
The Pats compensation picks are a fucking joke. Aside for a 3rd from Samuel give me a fucking break in terms of what they lost compared to what they gained.
You know these picks are based on the 2008 offseason as opposed to the 2009 offseason, correct? they lost- Randall Gay, Eugene Wilson, Asante Samuel, Donte Stallworth they gained- Sam Aiken, Fernando Bryant, Victor Hobson, Dan Connolly, C.J. Jones, Scott Player, Lewis Sanders, Marcus Pollard, Jason Webster, Tank Williams They signed nobody of impact and I don't recall any of their signings receiving notable contracts. However, they lost several players who signed big contracts elsewhere. I don't think there is any "fucking joke" here or that there is a conspiracy as you seem to be implying. Next year I don't expect the Patriots to receive three compensatory picks. Jabar Gaffney might have a decent season in Denver. The Patriots did sign a number of players this offseason who probably will perform better than the turds they signed via free agency last year.

Cakes...I like you. But your talking out of your ass. Aside from Samuel what did Gay, Stallworth or Wilson do? Wilson was cut by the team that signed him over the summer. Gay played for a shitty Saints secondary. Stallworth was injured and did not have a productive year for the Browns. Besides, they declined Stallworths option so it's not like they actively tried to resign him.
I could be mistaken, but I think Stallworth signed a pretty hefty contract with the Browns. The fact he got injured and was not productive is why the Pats likely got their 5th or 6th round comp pick from his signing as opposed to a 3rd or 4th. These compensatory picks are awarded based upon games played, possibly games started, possibly percentage of snaps played, performance to some extent, salary, and possibly some other factors. The NFL has not divulged how exactly they award compensatory selections, so we are only trying to make educated guesses here.
Cakes....found the real reason...Faneca only net the Steelers a 5th rd comp pick. Steelers | Reason for low compensatory pick revealed Thu, 26 Mar 2009 11:07:35 -0700 Scott Brown, of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, reports the reason the Pittsburgh Steelers received only a fifth-round compensatory pick for the loss of OG Alan Faneca to the New York Jets is a team that loses a free agent with 10 or more seasons in the NFL can get no better than a fifth-round compensatory pick.
