From watching the replay on NFL network last night, I realized one thing--Brad Smith is no WR. Independent of his two-handed drop of a sure TD, he runs poor routes and hardly fights for the ball. I realize the jets need help on the OL and DL, but would advise that a 3rd round pick next spring be invested in a WR. Since we will obviously pick very high, I would trade down and stockpile 2nd and 3rd round picks, and use one (and only one) of them on a WR. As to the balance of this year, I might give Wright a few more looks also.
I think they changed it so the 3rd round is on day 2, but I could be wrong. But yeah, I would be ok with a WR in the 3rd or 4th, depending on what we do in the first 2.
Brad Smith's real value to the Jets is his extreme versatility and his excellent special teams play. He is so good on special teams alone that he deserves a spot on the team. The fact that he can act as a backup at QB, RB, WR, and KR is just the icing on the cake.
I agree, people are a little hard on him, he was never meant to be a top WR, but he needs to toss the ball back to leon on short kicks.
And we fix that with a WR on day 1? Not so much. I concur that we need a WR but we get that out of Free Agency or a pre-draft trade like we did to get Thomas Jones.
