Just watching the NFL network. Contrary to most reports, looks like they will not add $10MM to the cap for 2006 as has been widely reported, but rather the cap will be set at $102 million. Free agency will likely start at 12:01 AM Friday or (more likely) Saturday.

Awesome! With our cap cutting, impending trade of Abe and the increase to $102 million, we're set for a great offseason (unfortunately, offseason is always our most exciting time as Jets fans!)

Yea, they were saying that this is the one last negotiation taking place, but Adam Schefer live from the owners meetings said they would most likely put it off until Saturday to give teams time to absorb the new cap number and adjust free agency planning accordingly. I hope we spend strategically, smartly and sparingly.

I wouldn't go as far to say that this is gonna be a great offseason for the Jets. Honestly, we have so many holes in so many positions they could have raised the salary cap 20 million and we still woulda had problems filling all our holes.

Once Abraham gets traded, and the possible teams that could sign him just went from about three to fifteen, we will be about 28 mil under the new cap of 102. The only high (quasi) profile guy I want is Ma'ake Kemoeatu.... a solid NT to anchor the 3-4. Then, build from the draft, and keep the cap under control.

The cap for 2006 will be at 102 million and the cap for 2007 will be 109 million.

We trade abe and we are seriously in great shape.

I would consider it a revealing offseason, if anything. We aren't going to build a Super Bowl team in 6 months, and we've cut too many core players to field a competitive team for at least a year. People are excited because of change, I think.

    7.5M

The cap if there was no CBA was going to be 94.53M

Keep in mind that if we trade Abraham and get to that figure you mention (which seems correct), we'll have 2 1st rounders. If the rumored deal with the Lions goes down, we'll have 2 top 9 picks to sign and that'll eat up cap space, especially since signing bonuses can only be spread over 5 yrs now.

Let the FO figure all of it out, look at the Job Tan. did in a matter of weeks, dude is a serious cap guru. Us fans should just sit back and enjoy the good times ahead. When this off-season started, the Herm thing went down, I was like great he we go again same ole stupid Jets. But they, the new FO, have done a nice job of turning things around. I was expecting 6-10 season next year, but if we draft wisely and get a couple of FA's in here who knows.... Good times!

Agree. The only thing I would possibly add is a good, young but under the radar offensive tackle via free agency. Then we can pick impact skill players with our likely 2 first round picks.

A 10 year old could have done what Tannenbaum did... cut good players to get under the cap. Here is a list of players Jets lost because of cap concerns, either too expensive or were not feasible to sign. Just in the last two years:

    1. Lamont Jordan replaced by Derrick Blaylock
    2. Kareem McKenzie replaced by Adrian Jones
    3. Anthony Becht replaced by Doug Jolley
    4. Jason Ferguson replaced by Sione Pouha
    5. Santana Moss replaced by Laverneous Coles
    6. Ty Law replaced by Justin Miller
    7. John Abraham about to be replaced by Bryan Thomas
    8. Kevin Mawae replaced by Pete Kendall
    9. Gerald Sowell replaced by BJ Askew

You are asking a lot to think they will be replaced through the draft given the fact that Terry Bradway and the entire scouting staff who brought you the last five drafts are still responsible for grading the draft prospects and establishing the draft board come draft day.

Rationalize it all you want but that is a lot of players not adequatly replaced because of cap mismanagement by Terry Bradway and Mike Tannenbaum.... who are both still employed by the Jets
