I wouldn't normally do this because hindsight is 20-20 but since Bradway and Herm are gone I thought I would look at this draft and what could have been. Of course we could do this with every draft and second guess gm's but this was brutal: Prior to the draft the Jets traded the 14th, 22nd and 116th pick for the 4th pick. With the 4th pick they took Dewayne Robertson. I won't comment on Robertson as you all have your own opinions on him at this point. What I wanted to discuss was the oppurtunity cost of not keeping those three picks. With those 4 picks the Bears choose: 14- Michael Haynes DE Penn State 22- Rex Grossman QB Florida 116- Ian Scott DT Florida Clearly the Bears didn't draft too well. What I looked at was who was available after those 3 picks that the Bears or the Jets could have drafted. With the 14th pick players still on the board: 16) Troy Polamula With the 22nd pick players still on the board: 23) Willis Mcgahee 27) Larry Johnson 36) Eugene Wilson With the 116th pick in the draft players still on the board: 120) Ashante Samuel 125) Ike Taylor 164) Dan Koppen To make things worse Bradway drafted Victor Hobson (53 overall)in the 2nd round, and while he's a decent player some other players were on the board at that point: 54) Anquan Boldin 56) Osi Umenyiora 69) Jason Witten The Jets 2003 Draft 1) Dewayne Robertson 2) Victor Hobson 3) BJ Askew 5) Matt Walters 6) Brooks Bollinger 7) Dave Yovanovits What could have been the Jets draft 14) Troy Polamula 22) Larry Johnson 53) Osi Umenyiora 85) Dominick Davis 116) Ike Taylor 150) David Diehl http://www.nfl.com/draft/history/years/2003
And I guess when Brady came out we could have drafted a super bowl franchise in one season right? Only God would be able to draft that well...
I agree, I'm just saying that Bradway didn't do to well drafting. If we had gotten one of those guys it would make a big difference today.
Believe it or not, I was talking about one of Herm and Terry early drafts. They traded up to get moss. I was high on Chad Johnson and Chris Chambers because of their size. My mock draft had them trading down to get extra picks and select those two.
Yeah that was their first draft and they didn't do to well. The best thing that happened was that the jets went 4-12 and we got rid of the two of them and the circus like atmosphere.
I'm not saying thats who they should have drafted, I'm saying thats who was available. You guys are telling me you're happy with who we drafted?
Right, we were gonna draft 2 running backs, you guys are brilliant. Instead of discussing why my post is wrong because of the 2 running backs, why don't you explain who you think the Jets should have drafted.
Dreessen83 go back to this draft and do it with every team in the NFL and you'll see how "poor" this draft was. No team strikes solid with all their picks. Robertson still has yet to reach his potential and Hobson is a quality starter. That is a solid draft in my opinion. Also if your going to do this go look at our 2004 draft and stack it up with the rest of the league.
I'll go back to the 2004 draft. All I'm saying is that we got Dewayne Robertson and he's still making a ton of money. If we had those 3 picks we could have gotten one of those guys who could be a pro bowl player for us. I'm well aware that 50% of draft picks don't pan out.
it is easy for us to look back on past drafts a critize but lets look back on all of the shitty mock drafts that we always get here just to see how great we are a scouting. Their is a reason why we are just fans.
You can always say the ifs, ands, buts and fantasy land draft, but every team misses out on players they should've draft. You cannot lie that you didnt like the trade up. Near everyone in Jets nation did. It just didn't pan out. He's a decent player, but not the Sapp everyone expected him to be. So cool it with these god damn scenarios. Anquan Boldin was extremely slow coming out of college. Umenyiora had trouble stopping the run and we drafted Thomas, Ellis and Abraham the three years before. We had LaMont Jordan and a healthy Curtis Martin. Why take a tailback? We had our all-pro blocking tightend in Anthony Becht and our offense didn't incorporate a tightend much. Witten had trouble running routes coming out of college as it is, why would we want another behemath that can block?
