Sitting high up in our perch in Section 323, Row 30 --- we cant see much -- but we can see that on defense the Jets play 10 defense versus 11 offense -- almost the entire game. Kerry Rhodes plays literally 30 YARDS OFF THE BALL on EVERY PLAY. Most plays -- he gets there as its over. Granted -- the Bills did not get behind the jets at all yesterday -- but its almost impossible when on every play (every down) -- the safety is playing in the stands. This works from time to time -- the interception by Reavis was caused by dropped coverage. BUT -- the more amazing thing about the fumble by lOsman yesterday -- other than the decision to throw -- is that the jets sent the safeties. When i got home I watched Balt v Pitt. I know we are not that good on D. AnD, I know we dont have lewis and reed -- but they (despite losing the game) -- go after the qb every play and trust their dbs to cover. I dont think we should play that way ALL the time -- but doing the same thing play after play is insanity. They got desparte -- sent Elam -- and look what happened.
Watching the game, It seems that I'm always screaming BLITZ SOMEONE at the tv, especially after watching Losman sit in the pocket most of the time. They finally did and it worked. That being said, they don't have the personnel to let the CBs play man the whole time, because frankly aside from Revis, they all suck.
I said the same thing yesterday -- smith or rhodes sitting so far back protecting against the bomb was useless. I saw Rhodes up on the line once on the bad snap play. They need to watch he Titans, Cardinal, Rams games and see what their aggressive defense looked like and go back to it. That safety being so far back is why we are getting no pass rush and our running defense has struggled.
They blitz all the time but they don't get off their blocks. It's frustrating to say the least! Also, Rhodes is not earning his money this year.
I don't think so because he's been a proven playmaker. But this year he's been a big disappointment. Maybe they need to start sending him on some blitzes again to get him going.
Like the original poster stated. Rhodes is playing WAY off the ball. Can't make plays when you are 20 yards from the action with a deep cover responsibility.
The Jets run a prevent defense all game long. Rush the passer with the DE and NT on the left, another DE on the right (leaving an open lane right up the gut for the QB to take off most plays), drop all the linebackers into coverage (or blitz one if you're feeling saucy), and have the safeties play very deep. This defense plays scared. If every defensive play was called similar to the game winning one, our defense would look much better, even if it did give up an occasional big play because of it.
Okay, how about the whiffs he made yesterday when he was trying to tackle? It's happening all to often. He's not 20 yards down the field on every play.
The solution - the coaches put him in a position to succeed. Move him up the field, have him start attacking the offense, whether it be through a blitz or trying to jump routes. Rhodes is too good to be acting as a prevent safety valve.
There you go Murrell. No problem in wanting him to play better, but he needs to be in position to make plays. He is one of the leaders in tackles. Problem is they are 15-20 yards downfield.
I missed that, but totally agree. The defense needs to start attacking. They need to pee on the opposing offense, and claim the field as theirs. Make opposing offenses pay a tax for using THEIR field. Right now they are a bunch of sissies playing school girl defense, squeaking "please don't hurt me!".
What they are playing against to me seems to be the big play. I agree, take your chances, put Revis on the deep threat one on one and create some confusion. If they get the occasional deep play, so be it, our offense can score too.
True, but when he was in position to make some tackles yesterday he completely whiffed. And he's been a bit of a liability in coverage this year as well.
I don't see it, but maybe I am not paying attention while the opposing O is zinging passes all over the field. The D as a whole has whiffed.
I fail to see why professionals who are paid to see these things and correct them, (jets coaching staff) simply fails time and time again to adjust these things. How is this possible? I cant explain how frustrating this team is to watch. We play prevent defense all game, and when we get a lead (no matter how small) we go into a prevent offense..,ahghhhh!!#?@!@!!??? Heads need to start rolling.
It's funny you say that, because I said the same exact thing when I was at the game. We take Kerry out of every play because he plays so deep. Teams don't go deep on us. They pick apart our zone in the middle of the field. Kerry never has a chance to make plays.
