All Picks. No Trades. I will provide explanations for the first 6 rounds. 1 - Marquis Lee (WR) -> Perfect blend of BPA and need. Great fit alongside Decker. YAC machine, and a warrior that performed well despite injures. Good character. Tough to make the decision between him and Cooks, but I feel in a pro WCO, Lee is a better fit and is more likely to succeed with the Jets because of that. 2 - Chris Borland (3-4 ILB) -> David Harris may move on soon, Davis hasn't exactly lit the world on fire (though it's early). Borland is an excellent fit at ILB. A poor man's Luke Kuechly that can cover space. Very disciplined player according to scouting reports. I am willing to pick the guy that doesn't have the ideal size but makes up for it in other areas. Excellent football IQ 3 - Ed Reynolds (FS) -> Another intelligent football player that was the captain of the stout Stanford secondary. Excellent at reading defenses and is an GREAT communicator on defense. Standing at 6-2, 205 pounds, he's got the ideal size to play the position. Reliable in coverage, and can tackle. Only minus is the injury history (torn ACL in 2011). Another minus is he's not as disciplined and can be VERY aggressive. 4 - C.J. Fiedorowicz (TE) -> 2 way tie-ends are becoming a thing of the past. Imagine getting the best blocker and an average pass-catcher with good size in the 4th round? Pretty good value. A TE that can stay in the game at all times. Size allows him to be a RZ target. 4 - Ross Cockrell (CB) -> The first of 2 CBs drafted. Physical, can play man to man. A two-time first team All-ACC selection, he has amassed 227 tackles, 7.0 tackles for loss, 41 pass breakups and 12 interceptions. Cockrell is Duke's all-time leader in total passes defended with 53. Duke's secondary was what was it BECAUSE of this kid. Starting potential for sure. We need him to get a little strong, but he's a physical player. Will compete with Walls for the starting job. 4 - Prince Shembo (3-4 OLB) -> Project 3-4 OLB. This guy has really long arms and is versatile. He doesn't have the explosiveness you truly want in an OLB but he maybe able to make up for that in his motor. Bad at pass-coverage. 5 - David Fales (QB) - > 2nd most accurate QB in this draft next to Bridgewater. Developmental QB, that would benefit sitting and learning on the bench first few years. From Fales Pro Day: 6 - De'Anthony Thomas (RB) - Sorry guys we aren't getting Chris Johnson. 6 - Walt Aikens (CB) 6 - Tom Hornsey (P) 7 - Justin Britt (RT)
I really like all of your players. Any of the 3 2nd tier WRs (Lee, Cooks or Beckham) works for me. Borland is a good player, he's underrated, but shouldn't be. Only small compliant, I'd like to get an O Lineman a lot sooner and another WR later in the draft.
xcellent board - agree with WW - we need to start drafting pure OT - we cannot survive an injury to either LT/RT..... get rid of the punter - i hate when teams spend any pick on a kicker/punter. absolutely hate it.
I have no issue drafting a punter, especially with 12 picks. Jets need a better punter and drafting one very late prevents battling to sign one after the draft.
I had a really tough time deciding between Cooks and Lee (I like Beckham, but not at 18) - honestly I'll be happy with any of the 3. Maybe I need to look at Beckham a little bit more that could change my mind. I really like Cooks's attitude off the field as well. I REALLY like Borland as our future ILB. I was wondering if the 2nd was a little too early to grab him, but there aren't many good ILB prospects in this draft. I agree with your offensive line and wide receiver assessment. Would you exchange Prince Shembo for a guard / tackle or Michael Campanaro? You, WW85 opened my eyes to this kid, he's a good talent and could be a steal. Could exchange Fales for Michael Campanaro as well.
I don't think our Punter is very good, sucks we let go of Weatherford - but I'm sick of our punters messing up kicks.
Jets seem to be looking at these WRs very closely. Idzik is going to draft the BPA available at #18 and someone who was a top 12 pick will fall. If we don't take a WR at #18, I hope Jarvis Landry falls to #49, he's not the fastest player, but he has NFL player written all over him. His pro day today will tell a lot. I want us to address ILB, I like Skov a lot too. I like Fales, he would have gone higher if he declared last year. Mike Camp will be tough to make the Top 5 Wrs at first, but could go on the Practice squad for a short time. Camp is a little undersized, but he will be a reliable player, not flashy. The Idzik Wake connection is why I've been putting him in my mocks.
Lee, Cockrell, and Fales are picks I really like, especially under the assumption you're not planning to have Fales come in and start. Lee is one of my top 3 receivers in this draft and Cockrell is underrated behind some other guys that frankly aren't that good. I agree in that I have Fales as a 5th round target in my rankings. I actually think Borland is pretty overrated personally. He just runs up to the LOS almost every play and seems to be guessing. He also doesn't have very good recovery speed. I think Skov and Preston Brown are definitely better inside linebackers than he is, and that Christian Jones probably is, too. One late round prospect who has great instincts at ILB is Caleb Lavey from Okie State. This guy just makes play after play both in coverage and behind the LOS. He is not big and he is not fast but man the guy can diagnose and destroy a play. JMO. Also think Fiedorowicz gets a little too much love. Maybe that's not quite right... i guess it's more that Lynch deserves more love. Arthur Lynch from Georgia is a really good TE and is much more athletic and explosive than CJ.
Thanks for the feedback CleveSteve. 1. Chris Bortland def doesn't have the great speed, but I think he makes up for this in instincts, he's an excellent shed blocker and he's good in Zone Coverage (not so much man). I like Skov too btw, Jets desperately need linebacker talent. Going to take a look at those other ILBs as well. 2. CJ visited the Jets, which is why I put him in my Mock. I think CJ is a better blocker. I like Lynch though as well.
Excellent job, 101. I'd be very happy with this draft even though I'm not wild about Fales. I guess if I had my druthers, and nitpick, I'd rather have Cooks or Beckham than Lee, and an OLB taken earlier (and a better prospect than Shembo). I like Fiedorowicz and getting a TE that is a good blocker already. I like getting Harris' replacement and I like all the players you've picked. I like Cockrell a lot, although his relative lack of footspeed is somewhat of a concern.
I respect your opinion a lot and usually agree with you, but not so much on this post. Even though Fales will fit in some WCOs, I don't think he's a good fit for MM's version. He likes to take deep shots more than others, and Fales would prevent that from happening. I like Cooks a WHOLE lot better than Lee and think he's a safer pick than Lee. Not only is Lee's ability to stay healthy a question mark, but so are his hands and his speed. Cooks' character is every bit as good and maybe better than Lee's, and he's certainly faster, more elusive and explosive and has better hands. I like Fiedorowicz and can't believe you think Lynch is better. Lynch may be more athletic and explosive, but what good is it when he chokes in the clinch and has questionable hands? I've seen UGA play alot (they're on TV here every Saturday) and have seen him drop a lot of passes. I'm not that high on him at all. I'd take him in the 6th round, but not before, and I'd rather have Ebron, ASJ, Niklas, Fiedorowicz, Crockett Gillmore or Marcel Jensen over Lynch.
I don't understand your hatred for picking a punter. The Jets haven't had a great punter in a long time. When you wait until the draft is over, the best punting prospects are already gone. A great punter can have a lot bigger impact on games and the team's play than a lot of other position players taken at the end of the 6th round. I gotta disagree with you on this one. I'd like to see an OT taken earlier too. I'd prefer one over Fales or Shembo, but would also like an OLB taken higher, but don't know who I'd want to bump from this list to take an OLB prospect higher.
Fieodorowicz is IMO painfully limited when it comes to athleticism. Even at the combine of all places you he could see him unable to get to the ball on anything that wasn't a short pass over the middle. He will have to outmuscle the coverage on every throw he gets in the pros. I like Ebron, ASJ, and Niklas more than Lynch, too, but those are top-50/top-60 guys. Gilmore I really haven't seen enough to say one way or another. Marcel Jensen played in an offense that didn't run the ball so it's hard to say how good of a blocker he is. He did make some nice catches, but every one of those guys at Fresno struggled with drops. We must have seen different games of Lynch because every time I watched Georgia he was making big plays. Guess that's what happens when you can't watch every game. *Edit* Sorry, forgot to address the other points. Cooks is also in my top 3 (It's Watkins, Lee, and Cooks). I think it is unlikely that both of them are available when the Jets draft. As far as Fales goes, he pushes the ball downfield on the edges. He is very adept at putting up winnable balls in one-on-one situations for his receivers. He does have below average arm strength, for sure, but if you have wideouts who can win contested throws in one-on-one situations, back shoulder throws, etc, (both of which Lee will excel at) then Fales is an effective downfield thrower. Cooks' abilities are more about creating instant/sudden separation and running away from defenders with the ball. He is not a jump-ball type. I think as a pair Fales would do better with Lee than with Cooks. JMO.
I admit that Fiedorowicz isn't fast or athletic or even ideal. That's why I'd rather have ASJ or Niklas than him, but if they can't get either of those in the 2nd, then I'd be very happy with Fiedorowicz. I don't care if he can't get downfield. First and foremost, I want the Jets' starting TE to be a good blocker, and second a good safety valve receiver for the QB. Fiedorowicz is that. He's so tall, he's a mismatch. He will always be open, and would be a great Red Zone target and target on 3rd downs. He could take 2-3 steps after the snap, catch the ball, take 2 more steps and fall, and pick up at least 5 yards. He's the type that can keep the chains moving and help out the QB. He has huge, soft hands. When they want the TE to run deeper routes, they can bring Cumberland in and run two TE sets. Yes, I've seen Lynch make some good plays too, but he looks to me to be the classic "heartbreaker." He looks smooth and good and you count on him heavily, but then he kills you at key moments with a drop or a hold or a missed block. We'll just have to agree to disagree for now. It will be interesting to see what happens with him.
I would be upset if the draft shakes out like this. Lee, Fiedorowicz and Fales are the 3 most overrated players at their positions in this draft... I like the Shembo and Reynolds picks though
What you just said is debatable. I could say Amaro is more overrated, as he's supposed to go higher. Bortles, BWater and Manziel could all be considered overrated as well. Fales is a day 3 prospect, no way he's the most overrated QB.
