I was listening this afternoon to the Afternoon Blitz and Adam Schein said he think Brick will go to the Saints and Leinart will go to the Titans. So, I was confused, because for the last month or so those are the 2 guys that he has been constantly associating with the Jets. So, I called and asked what he think the NYJ will do now, if indeed his predictions for New Orleans and Tennessee come true. For the first time, Schein said he thinks a trade down would be the Jets first choise. About 6 weeks ago he was shocked when a Jets fan called in suggesting a trade down, and today he said it's a good possibility. His second prediction was that we take Mario Williams. I asked if that would be a good idea because we already have Von Oelhoffen and 2 first round DE picks on the team. They said Bryan Thomas will never be a starter, and if we drafted Mario then it would probably be Williams and Von Oelhoffen in the 3-4 and Williams and Ellis in the 4-3. So, now I don't mind so much if we take Williams. I still think offense should be the priority in this draft, especially O-line, and would hope that if we go DE at 4 we go OL at 29. After they were done with the Mario talk they started saying how taking Thomas instead of Ed Reed is one of the biggest draft blunders ever....
The worst part is that it's not one of those "hindsight" blunders. Secondary was a huge need for the Jets in that draft ,and the whole country had just watched Reed make big play after big play at "The U". I was drooling for the jets to get Reed...and out of the blue they take the combine superstar,Thomas. Jets fans immediately knew it was a mistake.
The fact that this guy thinks Von Oelhoffen would beat out Ellis for a starting job, in any package, is pretty ridiculous. Im really not too concerned with anything else this guy has to say after reading that. Von Oelhoffen is solid, but Ellis is a very good defensive end, hes not gonna lose his starting job to a 35 year old.
I, for one, assume that Jones can play LT. That means that we need a center and a RT in order to finish out the line. 29 seems to be safe for Mangold. Which leaves RT. My personal fave is Andrew Whitworth and, depending on who you ask, he is a second or third rounder. That suits me just fine. So go ahead, take Mario at #4 even though O-line is our biggest need - I still think we'll be capable of getting the best and maybe second best available player at our positions of need.
It would be nice if we got Mario, he could be our future superstar. Out of the 3 guys we got now, only Ellis has ever had more then one good season. Ellis 2003 - 11 sacks 2004 - 12.5 sacks Von Oelhoffen only once more then 4 (2003 - 8 was a good seasons) Thomas best year 3.5 sacks Last year all the guys were almost the same Ellis 38 tackles - 2.5 sacks Von Oelhoffen 35 tackles - 3.5 sacks Thomas 37 tackles - 3.5 sacks So I think we need to get Mario
Ellis was forced to be the star on a team where the defense lacked playmakers that made a difference. Vilma and Abraham were really the only guys who could do it, and both were not superb. They were pretty good, Vilma great, but neither really was the D playmaker this Defense so badly needs. Ellis is like the Carlos Beltran of the Mets. Before you say, "WTF?" hear me out. He can't be the star...he has to be the pretty good player on a team filled with guys who can really make plays. He needs to be surrounded with players. On a team like the 04 defense, he showed us what he can do with a supporting cast. Ellis is better than KVO. No question about that.
You're right--secondary was a huge need that year. The very next pick Bradway "filled" that need with Jon (where is he now?) McGraw. I am SO glad Boobway won't be drafting any more. Only Boobway would take UAB (Thomas) over U. of Miami (Reed).
Oh god, I remember that draft...... I was at a wedding but ran in to check the TV and was thinking the JETS would get Reed, then yelled WHAT!?!?!?! Good thing it was an open bar reception....... :shit:
The only thing Jon McGraw did was give Drew Brees a helmet-to-helmet concussion in 2004. He wasn't a bust. He made a whole 15 tackles last year for the Lions.
I now it is on sirius channel 124 and on in the afternoon. Don't know about tv. But I would assume if you had the nfl network it would be on in the afternoon on that channel.
