Before everyone starts jumping down my throat, hear me out for a second. I believe the game-winning touchdown was a TERRIBLE decision by Favre. Yes, I am aware that it worked (by some miracle, whose name is Coles), but I simply cannot justify throwing such a risky ball to the outside in that situation when the receiver is completely blanketed. Frankly, I don't even think the throw itself was good. Coles saved the day with a circus grab and that's the bottom line. Those who say it the play was designed to be underthrown are delusional. Coles was in poor position. The defender was all over him. Terrible decision. LUCKY. OK, bash away!!!!
I'm with you on this one, but everyone is going to argue that Favre is a risk taker, etc. etc. nasty catch by LC though
The play may not be designed to be a throw like that, but Favre read it and knew that the only chance for it to work was by throwing it behind him. As a QB, you try and throw it where only your WR can catch it. If he throws it in front of him, Coles might be able to catch it, but it is much easier for the CB to defend it. By throwing it where he did, the CB couldn't get it, and Coles is the only player who had a chance to catch it.
the CB was turned the other way, looking at the back corner of the end zone, he got lucky and the ball hit his arm. Coles did make a great catch, but the CB had no shot at catching the ball
I was at the game and in good position, and it looked at first like the DB had a chance to make a play on it. But I saw the reply, and it wasn't as close as I expected. But just to say, farve's other 3 INTS were miserable. The Pick-6 for obvious reasons, but the first two it was obviously a pick from the moment it left his hand.
they were miserable, but I'm still puzzled at the play calling, just run the ball ,we have the parts to do it, throwing 40 times when you don't have to, picks will happen
I can understand second guessing the coaching staff and Favre on any number of things: 1.) Not getting Leon the ball more. 2.) The 3rd game in a row against back-ups and busts without a turnover and the fact those QB's keep getting better and better.... coincidence? maybe 3.) Favre forcing balls into tight coverage against a horrible defense. 4.) The fact the Jets were flat. But to criticize Favre on a throw where only Coles could catch it? I really am not getting that. With so many questions this is really a questionable thread and I am really trying to be freaking nice and it is hard real hard Ringo .................
the bottom line is that it is far too risky a play given the situation in the game. coles had a CB draped all over him. its 2nd and 5 from the 15... down by 3 points with time running down. run the goddam ball, throw a slant. i hate to use the word conservative. the better word is SAFE. believe it or not, there is a time and place to be safe with the football!! and i must say, favre's interceptions this season have been arguably the worst group of interceptions i have ever seen. every single one reminds me of chad's ducks last year vs. the giants. at the time i thought those were the worst grouping of jets picks of all time!
It's not bashing Favre for that one throw, I think it is just the whole game getting to people and that throw being potentially questionable (it was to me when I watched it at least)...I wish I tivo-ed it to rewatch, but I'll take everyones word for it that it wasn't as close as I thought
You're damn right he could have. The dude fell down. Coles got a little push off. It was a horrible decision. And just because the announcer says "wow that was a classic back shoulder underthrow" doesn't make it true.
the corner was playing the fade, so he's not going to jump the underthrow route, cause if he does that, all Favre has to do is throw it up and let Coles jump and snag it in the back corner. Sometimes I wonder if any of you have actually played football. That was the only spot he could throw the ball to Coles without it being knocked down or potentially intercepted
I think it was a good throw by Favre and a better catch by Coles. It was to the outside (where Coles had position) so it had little chance of being intercepted.
