I have 2 solutions: 1. Change the defensive formations and add Elam to the LB corp. None of our ILB can run with TE's or crossing WR's. If we add a 3rd safety I think we have a shot at stopping these 3rd and long conversions. 2. Activate Marques Murrell please and let him play the ILB on 3rd down. The guy runs like the wind and has the athletic ability to run with opposing TE's and Slants. I would deactivate one of the CB's like Justin Miller or Ahmad Carroll and activate Murrell for 3rd down. He be perfect to cover the ground or blitz up the middle.
I actually thought in the second half we were fine because of a combination of our adjustment and KC's playcalling. They were 4/13 on 3rd down today. When they did convert, it seemed to be because we were rushing 3 and another time we blitzed everyone and they ran a Paul Hackett draw up the gut. We should have not gotten thrown on like that by Thigpen. I just wish we could look like Pittsburgh's d. Now that is a disgusting 3-4.
This has been the most frustrating thing for me to watch this season... W/ Revis virtually shutting down one side of the field...and Rhodes having the range to shadow sideline to sideline..we should've figured out a way to get off the field in obvious passing situations..and we have not. I'm not sure what the answer is at this point.
:rofl:now thats funny:up: But in all honesty, I think last years two top defensive stars (Harris, Rhodes) are not making the big time plays we expected them to make. Hell Rhodes hasnt been around any turnovers this year, and Harris, even though he is leading the team in tackles, is not making any game changing plays, such as an INT, a sack, and stop in coverage on third down... you know any of those big plays Vilma used to make, or Harris himself was capable of making just last year....
Here's an idea, rush at least 4, preferably 5, and if one of them is going to be Rhodes or any other defender, make sure they don't start 15 yards out.
They maybe using it a bit w/ Revis..but I think Lowery's lack of make-up speed forces them to play either zone or off-man.
Harris not making as many plays as last yr is understandable because our D is more balanced overrall. I guess u can make the same case for Rhodes but it's hard when none of them can force an INT
"1. Change the defensive formations and add Elam to the LB corp. None of our ILB can run with TE's or crossing WR's. If we add a 3rd safety I think we have a shot at stopping these 3rd and long conversions." The problem is they got rid of Vilma, who was great in pass coverage. The Jets could potentially get a secound round pick for him, but I doubt they will. We most likely would have been better off keeping him for passing situations. Right now not even one of our LBers is good in coverage and when you combine that with the fact that we have only one good safety on the roster it creates problems. This CS looked at last years team and saw the obvious defeciencies against the run and then went out and got new players to fix that. The problem is they forgot that getting rid of Vilma was going to create a new defeciency.
Our D gets pressure at times of need and can stop the run almost consistantly but the pass has to improve and def on 3rd down.
I want Mike Nolan on our coaching staff as a consultant or an assistant something or another... The man runs a damn good defense. If Dick LeBeau ever gets let go, the Jets SERIOUSLY need to swoop in and get him. As I watched the Steelers game, I was a little awed at how well they play; they stopped the run effectively and managed to contain an otherwise deadly Giants offense. Guys like Ike Taylor in the secondary were flying around the ball in the second half. If we are ever gonna stop anyone, its gonna come by lighting a fire under our players asses.
Thats not the problem.. when you rush 3 all these teams do is find a hole in the middle of the fiel and make the first down.
