Ever since I stopped taking it seriously I really get a kick out of reading this board. All the experts who know better. It doesn't matter what the Jets do, win or lose, people are going to be here bitching. I'm going to try to respond to some of the ideas I've seen posted recently. Should be fun to see the responses. 1. Fire the entire coaching staff - Yes this makes a lot of sense. The team is finally getting the players in place to play their system and many want to fire the coaches. That way the team can start over. They can bring in a new coach and they get start getting the guys they want. And really, there's just so many great unemployed coaches out there the Jets would have their pick of guys to turn this around. The reality is the only guy who could make any kind of immediate impact might be Cowher. But given what I've seen on this board, his conservative, run-first nature would drive Jet fans nuts. The truth is Mangini and company are going nowhere soon. Woody is not going to fire them during a year in which they've already won as many as they won last year. Personally, I don't think the Jet coaches have done a poor job this year. Can you second guess them? Of course, especially when your team loses, but to crtiticize them one week for throwing too little and the next for throwing too much is silly. 2. Brett Favre - Brett, Brett, Brett. The Jets are getting exactly what a sane person would have expected. He is what he is. He's always been a risk taker, he's always had great games, and he's often made incredibly poor decisions. And this is what you're seeing now. Why does this surprise anyone? Especially considering he's 39 years old and had absolutely no time to learn the team's playbook before being thrown into the fire. Considering the timing of the trade, I'm actually surpirsed at how well he's done. The only gripe I have about him is that he really just throws way too many passes up for grabs. 3. The Offensive Line - While an improvement, the offensive line still hasn't jelled. It takes time, months, if not years, for an offensive line to learn to play well together. As a result, Favre has been under significant pressure for much of the year, and as we all should know, this leads to poor performances and mistakes, especially for risk takers like Favre. 4. The Rest of the AFC East - With the Dolphins beating the Bills the division is wide open. With Brady out there no longer appears to be a dominant force in the division. With Favre as QB the Jets can beat anybody on a given day. That's the advantage he gives the team over Pennington, who by the way, is having an amazing year. Let's see how the Jets do next week against the Bills before we bury them. A win and they'll be in the thick of the playoff race. A loss, especially if they don't look good, and they'll officially become pretenders. 5. Suffering Jets Fans - I've been a Jet fan for almost as long as the team has existed. I've seen a lot of bad teams and some good ones. I like this year's team (although I still do not care for Favre as a person). They have made huge strides. Give them another year to see what happenes (although QB is a huge question, especially if Favre is gone next year, a distinct possibility). This year's team is fun. Let's stop ripping them to pieces and enjoy the positives. There are several if you look close enough. You're friend, Long Time Jet Fan
BOOOOOOO! lol - just kidding I agree with you. ...However, if we would have lost today I would have came with matches and gasoline.
How dare you not blame everything on the coaching staff? They definitely game planned for Favre to throw 5 picks the last two games and leon to muff a punt last week. I agree with you 100%. Every coach gets second guessed about all of their decisions. The best thing this organization can do is stick with Mangini and Tannenbaum. This team gives 100% every week. For the most part Mangini's teams are prepared every week. They have drafted and developed a number of players. Mangini like every single coach in the NFL can always get better.
I was going to post something similar to this but you've said much of it for me. I do enjoy this forum greatly at times but just as much I find myself having to avoid it. There has not been one week this season where optimism and hope for the season has outshined criticism, stupidity and hatred on this board this year. I'd say after the Cards game it was 50-50. Yet we have won 4 games! As many as last year. I'll admit to being perplexed by the gameplan today. The Favre INT on 3rd and 2 reflected not only his poor decision making at times but also the strange pass to run ratio (so the playcalling) against a bad rush defence. However I admit to actually liking Schottenhimer in the main...hey he's a big improvement from the Hackett days! But the campaign to fire the whole staff (seemingly ongoing since our first loss) is ridiculous. I have only been a Jet fan for a short time compared to many, so I try to understand the bitterness but I think it's over the top - and we all know it. Also on Favre, he is making too many poor throws. His first two INT's today were just flatout bad decisions. I think the third one was actually half Stuckey's fault for giving up so badly on the route. But it's true we knew this is the kindof thing we were getting. 6 TD's and a hall of fame day one week...INT struggles another. But the thing I admire about the last 2 weeks is that he's still come back when it's counted - that incredible drive from our endzone against Oakland and today engineering a cool 41st career 4th quarter comeback effort. Chad is having a very impressive year for the Dolphins. He was much more careful with the ball in the red zone for us in previous years. However what happens the last 2 weeks if you put Chad in the huddle for those comeback drives? I know who I'd rather have and lets get real..we don't look great atm but a win is a win and a breakout performance or victory is possible at any time for seemingly any team in the NFL. We're 4-3 and only 1 game behind in the division...I don't feel that bad about it actually. Btw Long time Jet fan what is it that makes you not care for Favre as a person?
Dude, do you not realize what your seeing out there? Yes were 4-3 but we barely beat Cin, KC, and Miami. Noodle arm almost beat us and we lost to Oak who is a horrible team and almost lost to Cin and KC's backup quarterbacks who are garbage and had a field day against us. Schotty is also idiotic with his playcalling. You doesn't run against Oak when it was obviously working and agaisnt KC he did the same shit but luckliy we won. If we can beat the Bills next week then maybe we can talk but till then nada.
Everything was swell until I read that last sentence. Did you really just bitch about Favre tossing up freebies after spending an entire freakin' paragraph criticizing TGG for doing the same thing? Buddy, it's time to get off that high-horse.
Schottenheimer's playcalling has been confusing the previous few weeks, including this week. A play action bomb on 3rd and 1 fairly deep in our own territory? Stupid at that point of the ballgame. Not running the ball enough, even with the lead, (or even presenting the threat of the run) against the worst rushing defense by far.
Well this is pretty funny, I got carded when I went for my beer and chicken cheesesteak sandwich today. (I'm 52).
Yup, Favre tosses up freebies and it's annoying. In all the years I've watch football I've never seen anyone remotely just chuck the ball up for grabs like he does. This is not an opinion it's a fact. Anyone watching the Jets or the Packers over the years knows this is true. I just never knew the extent until he became a Jet.
I know another QB that's quite comparable in your assertion....Chad Pennington....maybe you've heard of him?
You've got to look at that in perspective. First off, we played them in Week 1 before they even used the Wild Cat, which beat NE and probably had something to do with Buffalo. Also take into account that it was NE with Cassel playing badly, he's no Tom Brady now but he has gotten better. I don't know that we beat Miami the way we are playing now. I am hoping for a miraculous improvement. I like that we're trying to forge an identity as a passing team, I just wish we were better at it. Also I'm not sure about this OL. The problem is that they're individually either good at run blocking or pass blocking, but not both, with the possible exceptions of Mangold and Moore who have both been pretty mediocre at both this year, but still might be our best linemen. Right now, Brick kinda looks like a bust, and so does Faneca. I expected things to be rough but...I mean, I expected more against the Bengals, Raiders and Chiefs honestly. I was really expecting the product to really start getting good around now, but that OL still has such problems and doesn't assert itself. In fact, I think it has been regressing. I felt earlier on in the season the pass blocking was actually better than it is now.
Uh, you're not for real are you? Did you just become a Jet fan when Favre joined the team? Because Pennington was not known for just chucking the ball up for grabs. In fact he went years without throwing an interception in the redzone.
Yeah, that's completely false. Favre is the anti-Pennington, for better and for worse as far as how they play on the field.
uh...i've been a Jet fan since 92'....so i'm WELL AWARE of what Chad Pennington is known for....and he's "chucked many a ball" up for grabs. I will give Penny his due...he's taken us to the playoffs...his Red Zone percentage and QB rating has been decent, and he's a great leader.... But...on the other hand.....he's got a weak arm, is a major injury risk, he's thrown "game-changing" INTs..... and i'm relieved he's gone.
i agree that Favre throws his fair share of INTs too...I'm not disputing that....Favre has a history of winning..Penny has a history of choking. Also, Penny has 58 career INTs in 8 1/2 seasons....so he's not exactly Mr.Reliable either.
