    Time to Deliver for Heffernan
Posted by David Wright on October 24th, 2008 filed in Opinions

NY Jets Head Coach Eric Mangini not only resembles King of Queens star Doug Heffernan but he often coaches allot like a delivery man with no leadership qualities.

We hear that Coach Heffernan is a different guy behind close doors then he is with the media and or on the field on Sundays. Some may say that he is a faker, want-to-be Bill ?model tone? Belichick. My point is, this guy shows no emotion in a game that is all about emotion. Take a look around the league and you will witness weekly emotional outbursts between players and coaches all the time. There is a huge difference between being a General at West Point and being a General in Iraq. A good example of this is like preparing during the week in the NFL vs. playing on Sundays in the NFL.

Coach Heffernan is too young and raw to be a head coach in the NFL. He needs more time at West Point before being asked to win the war in Iraq. Ask yourself, ?How many games besides the teams he worked for has Coach Heffernan watched and or participated in as a player or coach?? Let us be honest and look at his resume. He started out as a ball boy and only had one year experience as a defensive coordinator. It is clear this guy has not experienced enough games to merit his position. Heffernan is so stubborn and stuck on Belichicks ways that he has no idea on how to adjust during his own games and play to his strengths and go after the other team weakness.

It is easier to start off aggressive and test a defense early on in the game then it is to start off conservative. Would you rather toss a 40 yard interception in the fist quarter when you have three quarters to make up the error OR play conservative early on and when the defense knows you have to play from behind and catch up? This is like punting the ball and going three plays and out in the first quarter versus giving the ball away with two minutes to go in the game and your opponent sits on it and runs the clock out. This also makes the safeties play honest and respect the entire field for four quarters. Versus Arizona the Jets tested the Cardinal secondary early and often and even got first round pick tight end Dustin Keller involved. I am sure this had something to do with Coles and Cotchery not being doubled teamed and having to face a cover two scheme the rest of that game.

I heard an interesting comment on one of the NY radio stations this week and it really hit home. If the game plan is to dink and dunk and not test teams vertically why did they trade Chad Pennington and get Brett Farve? Again, the game plan vs. Oakland did not include deep passes down the field to keep the defense honest. The Jets did have there best offensive production year to date when it comes to total yards (over 400), but only managed to score 13 points. That my friends I blame on coaching and not adjusting during the game. The Raiders defense were teeing off so bad that Lavernous Coles suffered a concussion (third one in less then three years). In addition, Jerrico Cotchery was held to only one catch and also was banged up (different reports say shoulder & or leg).

It is not just on the offensive side of the ball where you see the conservative play calling. I am sorry, but when you give any quarter back time to pass he will eventually find an open man regardless how many guys you have in coverage. On Sunday versus Oakland, the Jets made Jamarcus Russell look an All Pro & the way people are picking up Javon Walker on the FF waiver wire he must have found the fountain of youth. Ahhh, the dude wanted to quit football entirely in camp less then a month and a half ago.

Coach Heffernan is a big boxing fan and often times motivates his players with speeches and re-runs of older boxers and matches. Then he should remember quite well what ?Rope A Dope? means. Maybe Dougie (Heffernan) should play Mortal Combat more and learn how to go for the jugular early and not let weaker teams hang around.

During the week, one of the biggest stories being talked about is what happened between Brett Farve and the Detroit Lions. When asked how much would that help a team out, Coach Heffernan downplayed it like it wouldn?t have much bearing of the outcome of the game at all. Okay then why did you rat out the Patriots during Spygate if you felt that way? Or, why is it that 50% of the Jets free agents all come from New England? Coaches and players will tell you this stuff happens all the time. The NFL is a billion dollar industry just like any other business. Do not kid yourself into believing that there is no lying, cheating, and stealing going on.

Coach Heffernan better deliver and bring the goods to the Meadowlands against the KC Chiefs this week and win by two touchdowns because they are playing one of the worst teams in the league (KC will be starting a third string QB and they have benched there All Pro running back not to mention they tried to trade there Hall of Fame TE last week). Clearly the Chiefs are rebuilding and the Jets are built for now. This game is a good measuring stick to see if the Jets can only beat (barely) another rebuilding team like the Dolphins & Bengals (in the likes of the Chiefs).

I can only hope as a Jet fan (just like my pal Doug Heffernan) that they come out firing on both ends of the ball. Including special teams where everyone knew late in the fourth quarter at home in a tied game that a fake punt was coming?? Where are there heads? Maybe up Carrie Heffernan?s (fill in blank)

"They need to come out firing on both sides of the ball. Including special teams."

I had my doubts up until then, but that clinched it for me.

The problem with this article is that it has too few metaphors.

While I agree that the Jets need a decisive win versus the Chiefs, this was absolutely one of the biggest pile of #@$ articles I've read in a while. And that's saying something.

Yeah, this was the suck. The only thing I agree with, or at least, understand the point, is in-game coaching apathy.

Players do what they do to get motivated or fired up, but it'd help if the coach is fiery too, in both good and bad moments. Mangini's take is that he doesn't want emotions to dictate play lest it'll lead to overaggressive mistakes. That's just dumb. He should teach them to harness their emotions and not let consume them, without having to completely thwart them.

This is silly, sure he only had 1 year experience as a defensive coordinator...but he did go 10-6 in his first year as a coach. That's gotta count for something.

yeah, not to mention they were at their own 30 yard line which means if they had been unsuccessful, the jets would already be in fg range to take the lead. So, no, it was not predictable at all.

No one who didn't know the play call saw that shit coming. It was risky as hell but worked out well for them.

There are people on this board who think the successful fake punt falls on the Coaches' shoulders. I'm not trying to single Junc out, but I think he was one of them.

Given the scenario, that was a gutsy call that worked. If you rewatch it, the players looked completely fooled, which shouldn't be a result of improper coach preparation. As a player, you should always be weary of a fake punt (unless the opposing team is punting from inside their 10 or something like that), and read it before you sell out and go for penetration. I mean, chances are you're not going to block it anyway.
