Laveranues Coles (head) and Jerricho Cotchery (shoulder) reportedly did "very little" at the start of Jets practice Wednesday, taking part in some conditioning drills but not running routes full speed or catching passes. Coles owners have to worry that he suffered a concussion in the team's Week 7 game, because that is usually an injury that will cost a player the next week. Coles was listed as having had "no practice" Wednesday and threatens to show up as doubtful on the final injury report. Cotchery's odds of playing in Week 8 appear better, but he didn't do a full workout either.
Chansi can get the job done if he has to be the #2. One of the starters will play. Throw Clowney in there for depth.
Man, I just have images of Chrebet and Toon. I hope Coles doesn't end up like them. If he is not practicing, then it was a pretty good knock to the head.
I guess it's a good thing we kept so many receivers on the roster. I'd be surprised if Coles makes it through the season - I love the guy but we all know how concussions go.
If the Jets knew he had taken a serious blow to the head wasn't it potentially negligent of them to let him back onto the field? In rugby, if a player is diagnosed officially with a concussion he has to miss at least three weeks. That's a big slice of the NFL season I know, but the player's health has to come first doesn't it? It's starting to look like Coles is getting dinged every other game at the moment and this isn't something you can just shrug off like some other injuries. I love the way he plays, but I don't think he's long for this team. I really, really hope I'm wrong because it would just be awful to lose yet another top receiver to concussions.
Coles will play Sunday, maybe only 50% especially if we have a big lead on KC. I am sure knowing that it was a head injury the second the hit occurred in Oakland, that the training staff thoroughly checked him out on the sidelines for a concussion and concluded he was okay to come back in the game. I cant see how days after the fact the condition would have worsened to the point where he will be held out. If thats the case the team doctor on the sideline should be fired because letting him back in a series or two after the hit occurred is when serious career ending damage could have occurred. They are just giving Coles time off and treating him like a 70yr old man.
I thought the same thing at first, and didn't think he should have ever been back on the field. Mangini mentioned in his press conference that they have a process when players go off the field with an injury that they are not allowed back in the game unless cleared by a doctor. If there is any negligence involved it would be on the part of the team doctor. Teams try to employee the best doctors possible (best in the world) from my understanding.
I really hope that's the case and I'm sure the docs know much more than me about concussions and whether or not you have one. It just looked to me like he was out of it for a while. Is it possible to be disorientated by a blow to the head and not have a concussion?
They're now reporting it is a concussion. It definitely looked like it when it happened. He looked like Chrebet on his last play but not as severe. The next one will be the last.
We should have traded coles while we could get something for him. Now we have a guy who is one hit away from being done.
Jeeez. That sucks...I think the Eric Smith concussion is just as alarming...his 2nd in 3 weeks!! Thats not a good sign, but probably more of a sign that these guys are going back on the field way too early. How in the world was Coles allowed back on the field Sunday????
I'm pretty sure Coles went back in the game, and had a penalty soon after if I'm not mistaken? I thought he also had a catch after it happened...but I could be wrong?
The thing with concussions is that it gets easier and easier to get dinged. At the end even mild-looking blows can turn the lights out. Toon said his last concussion felt to him like a cannonball had exploded against his head, yet it looked very minor. The brain just doesn't seem to recover like other parts of the body do. Coles needs to be protected from himself. He should not play for at least a few weeks and probably the rest of the season to at least give him a chance of recovering. He's so tough he'll want to play, but the team needs to stop him. Just my opinion.
Sit them both against the Chiefs. This game should be a lock, even if we had Justin McCareins as our WR1.
Yeah, I don't know what I was thinking - clearly went too far. But we should be just fine with Stuckey and Brad Smith.
