In 1998, we had a team with several newcomers. We were up and down and struggled for the first 6 weeks of the season, culminating in a 30 - 10 loss to a Rams team in Week 6 that would go 4-12 on the season. We all know how that season ended. Obviously, I don't think we're a 12 - 4 team. At the same time, I remember watching that game and wondering what the hell was up with this team. I had been at the season opener and saw a solid team that lost a close one in OT to the 49ers. I had seen a team suffer a somewhat inexplicable loss the next game to the Ravens before reeling off 2 straight wins and looking legitimate. Then came the Rams. It was hard to view it as simply a bad game. And yet, that's what it turned out to be. This game could be an indication that we're going to have serious struggles the rest of the season, or it could be just a bad game. EVERYONE made horrible mistakes in the game (with the exception of Thomas Jones). It happens sometimes. If the Jets go on to lose next week to the Chiefs, or if we see another couple of games like that as the season progresses, I'll hit the panic button. Right now? I'm confused, just like I was 10 years ago.
Who is our coach in 2008...who was our coach in 1998 more importantly...who was our defensive coordinator? This team is nothing like that one...and even that team couldn't make the Super Bowl. I look at the rest of our schedule and the best I can do is 9-7 KC - Win at Buffalo - Loss St. Louis - Toss up...leaning Win at NE - Loss at Tennessee - Loss Denver - Win, but can go either way at San Francisco - Win Buffalo - Loss at Seattle - Win, but a dangerous game Miami - Win could be as good as 9-7, or as bad as 7-9. The jets are in that range
How is St. Louis at home a toss-up, but San Francisco on the road is an easy win? The schedule no doubt gets tougher, but if the Jets are as good as they can be, they should be able to win 9-10 games there.
I was thinking of that game as well, we went to 2-3. That Rams team a year later won the Super Bowl, I don't see the Raiders doing the same.
Remember that the Raiders can play well at times. They lost to the Bills on the last play of the game 24-23. They led the Charges for most of their game before turning the ball over and losing. Like most NFL teams they are very inconsistant. A lot like us.
I can tell you right now that the JETS can win every game on thier schedule. I refuse to think the 2 BUF games and The TEN game are automatic losses. The only game on the schedule that is an automatic win is KC. If we lose that game, the rest will not matter. But, every game after next week is a toss up.
sure they can...but when have they ever done something like that. I can see Trent Edwards picking us apart, and us having a hellish time trying to move the ball against those defenses. And you know Belichick will work extra hard to beat us as he always does.
That was Glen foley's last start, who is our Glen foley? I am not giving up on the season but our O and favre are getting worsen instead of getting better like they should be by this time of year.
It's not like the Chargers are world beaters either. They just got crushed by the Bills, who we face twice. The Raiders kept trying to give us the game and we said no we don't want it. That's the sign of a really bad team. Two crappy teams played each other yesterday and the Raiders won. You have got to be worried or at least disappointed in what happened. I'm not one for jumping off bridges, I've been here before. Same 'ol Jets.
Our Glen Foley could be our "entire offensive sceme". Hopefully this loss can determine what type of offensive team we are going to be. We have a HOF QB on our side. We should stop the BS of all this "each game is different". Choose something that you do well and go with it. If we are going to be a running team, we should have never gotten Favre.
I never said this was the same team. I simply said that we're in a similar position of witnessing ups and downs through the first few weeks and not really knowing where to stand. Like I also said, this team doesn't go 12 - 4. They likely don't make a playoff run. To completely write them off from playoff contention right now, however, is premature, just like it would have been in 98. I would argue it's a bit unfair to criticize that team for not being able to make it to a SB. That Broncos team in 98 was one of the best squads ever to take the field, and the Jets took a lead midway through the 3rd before the wind started doing funky things and TD took over. I agree 9 - 7 is realistic, or it could be higher. The team has been up and down so far and I'm not sure which is the "real" Jets. If they can put everything together for a complete game, they're dominant. If not, it could get worse than 7 - 9. The way some people are talking, though, you'd think we were headed for a top 5 draft pick again.
