Former Spartans star Lowery making most of chance with Jets By Isaiah Guzman for the Mercury News Article Launched: 10/17/2008 08:56:19 PM PDT If Dwight Lowery's play against the Raiders on Sunday leaves some people asking "Who was that guy?" it won't be the first time. The Jets rookie cornerback and former San Jose State All-American, who grew up in Santa Cruz, has always snuck onto people's radar. But Lowery is also known not to waste much time with introductions. Similar to his quick emergence at the Division I level, Lowery has gone from unheralded fourth-round draft pick to a rookie starter putting up solid numbers for New York. Through five games, Lowery's 20 solo tackles are third-most on the team. He also forced a fumble against Arizona. "I think we knew what we had," San Jose State defensive coordinator and secondary coach Keith Burns said Friday. "And as far as him being a fourth-round pick, I still can't figure that out." Lowery helped hold Chad Johnson to 57 yards on five catches and no touchdowns in a 26-14 win over Cincinnati last week. And, against Miami in Week 1, he broke up a pass in the end zone on the Dolphins' last possession to secure the 20-14 Jets victory. Whether Lowery gets the start Sunday isn't yet certain. Starter Justin Miller, who was injured in the preseason, has been medically cleared. Jets coach Eric Mangini has not said if Miller will start in place of Lowery. But, either way, Lowery will be in an NFL uniform this weekend an hour and a half drive from where he shined at Soquel High and Cabrillo College. Lowery was little known when he arrived at San Jose State; he proceeded to lead the nation with nine interceptions as a junior. Now as a Jets rookie, he beat out veterans David Barrett and Ahmad Carroll for the chance to start in Miller's absence. Lowery's veteran-like composure and devout preparation have already turned heads in New York. One of those belongs to Mangini, who has drawn comparisons between Lowery and veteran cornerbacks like the Patriots' Ty Law. For his part, Lowery appears to be digesting it all with his usual dose of philosophy. "Football is very similar to life," he told the New York Post earlier this season. "Things happen to you and it's really how you respond to it. That's what's going to make you the player or the person you're going to be." __________________
Good Read. Kids been good so far as our 2nd CB. Has been burnt a couple but it is what it is. Overall he's doing good and very good for a rookie starting corner.
ROFLMAO. Justin Miller might start in place of Lowery? In what alternate universe? Or maybe he will start proving once again that Mangini has no feel for the game.
lowery= droy.i've been saying it since week 1.when we find a good ss this secondary is going to be sick
We could use an upgrade at SS but our biggest issue in the secondary is nickelback. Poteat's return has improved the position a little bit, but slot receivers have killed us.
And Lowery is sick. I haven't really been following the progress of other defensive rookies, but Lowery should probably be up there for DROY
Good chance for his 1st INT this week. The kid is only going to get better. Its good to see another 4th round gem.
Are you for serious? He's doing OK, quite well considering his draft position, but DROY? No way in hell. The fact that he has 20 solo tackles considering our stout run defense is just an indicator that he's being thrown on a lot.
If Revis didn't win DROY last year there is no way on gods green fuck earth Lowery wins it this year. He probably won't be considered unless he starts piling up the INT's.
Not many rookie CBs start and he's done an admirable job. I didn't say he was going to win it, I just said he could be up for consideration.
Lowery has been a stud! I'm not concerned with the few times he's been burnt. It seems like he is in great position on most of the plays directed at him.
Someone please enlighten me as to exactly how the opposition is getting so many pass yards against us if Revis has been virtually unbeatable and Lowery has been a 'stud'? Are Rhodes and Smith/Elam to blame then? There's been a passrush, so that's out as an excuse. I've only been able to watch one game this year due to work so I'm actually looking for a legit answer here... It can't all be on the safeties can it?
Lowery hasn't be a stud, there have been times where he's gotten beat. But the main weakness in our pass defense has been our nickelbacks. Slot recievers have killed us... Buster Davis, Steve Breaston, Wes Welker. In general, we haven't defended the middle of the field well.
Teams throw undernath on us ALL the time, you never see them complete passes for oer 20 yards.. They take advantage of the open spots in the defense. The Zona game we were up 34-0 and then they threw for a ton of garbage yards which killed the jets ranking.. Pennigton had 80 yards passing untill we played soft defenses in the 4th quater where he started throwing for some yards. coleman is awful as our 3rd corner, lowery has gotten beat for a couple of tds. with rhodes playing deep they dont test us much as rhodes said..
lowery did get beaten up a bit in San Diego and like the rest of the defence looked vulnerable against Cards 2nd half no huddle pass-only bonanza. However I think he has been playing well overall and certainly one of the surprises of the year so far for us. I hope they keep him in there against the Raiders, he's only going to get better. And the point made about rookie corners? They very often do get roasted...Lowery is an interesting contrast with Ahmad Carrol who of course was a 1st rounder for the packers and started almost straight away there and struggled hughely. DROY is a huge stretch but I'm happy with him
