I don't think we have a culture of losing, at least nothing compared to what we used to have. Lately we've been in an every-other-year cycle of making the playoffs and missing them, like a lot of teams in the NFL, but certainly not the losing we had for years before Parcells got here. In 2004 we fumbled the opening kickoff of the season and gave up points right out of the gate, also vs Cincinnati. We came back to win that game big, win 10 games, go the the playoffs and win a game on the road there. Contrast that with 1992 when Browning Nagle fumbled away the first snap of the season, we got behind, lost the game and went 4-12, that was a culture of losing. This team has a ton of guys who have played in post-season, a lot of them as Jets. I mean Favre is certainly a plus, but it's not like he's the only guy we have who has ever had success.
lol i love how most of our fans sound like they hate our team. yea if thats what you call culture. im younger so i dont have the piss poor "omg same ol jets lets blame everyone" attitude most fans do. some jets fans watch games as a reason to complain, brett favre just loves football. so if you mean does brett favre remind jets fans football is to be enjoyed? yes. but the fact that even one fan on this site regretted having this guy here, and that theres was something resembling logic behind that thought, is laughable
We've made the playoffs four times in this decade and there's two seasons left in it. In the 90s we made it twice, the 80s four times, the 70s not at all.
That's why you Jets oldtimers make me laugh so hard with this woe-unto-us/"same ol' Jets" schtick. Let's talk about some REAL historical dumps. From the merger (1970) to the arrival of Brett Favre, Ron Wolf, Mike Holmgren in 1992, the Green Bay Packers had exactly TWO winning seasons, and ONE playoff win (and even that was in the strike season of 1983, when scabs were playing). Once again ... you guys have no idea what a "culture of losing" really is. Let one of your own, Ron Wolf, explain it to you: link
Good stuff. A guy on my hoop team is from Detroit, a Lions fan. He said only Jet fans have this impression of being cursed and all that and he had a point. Detroit has won one playoff game since something like 1961 and they had Matt Millen in charge for eight years.
I'm hoping the San Diego game this year was a blessing in disguise, in that the team picked itself off the mat and used that performance as the starting point for a great season. Being embarrassed on Monday Night before the country may have been the best thing to happen to us all year. I agree with the article's point. He didn't mention another cricital Favre-inspired drive after the Cardinals closed the gap to 34-21, having scored three times consecutively. Favre just led the team down the field and all would be well from that point forward.
It also gave our offense a ton of real game reps to work on the passing game, which definitely showed the following week.
Just because the stats show we "should" not have a culture of losing, does not mean that we do not have a culture of losing. And I would rather call it a culture of non-confidence. I don't know what else could be influencing this, but I don't see any point in denying it. If its true that the guys who became fans in the 2000's don't perceive it, then the influence must be from before 2000. If the guys who became fans in the 2000's do perceive it, then it has to do with something more recent. I'm going to start a separate thread with a poll to try to answer this question.
Yeah, that's an even worse one. Your buddy should be happy that "The curse of Bobby Layne" has finally lifted though. The story is that when the Lions traded QB Bobby Layne in 1958, after he'd just led them to THREE championships, he supposedly said "I hope they don't win another championship for 50 years." Well, 50 years officially came and went about 2 weeks ago (ironically, right about when they fired Millen). Other teams with much worse droughts than Jets: KC, Jets, Tampa, Cincy (?), old Colts (Ravens). And the Vikings & Seahawks, in a different way (perrenial postseason flops). Heck even the Cowboys stank up the league for a good decade in the 80s. And I think the Patsies weer bad for a very long time before Parcells got there, no?
I think it's something that can come and go, but usually only comes when a frachise bottoms out, which despite some bad and injury plagued seasons, we haven't done. The Jets haven't had consecutive losing seasons since 1995-96. Back then it was a culture of losing, from the last 5 games of 1994 after the fake spike game, through the two Kotite years, we were 4-33. That's losing. Even when we were ahead we expected to lose and usually did. That's not the case now, not even close.
I'm just going to continue to sit back and just enjoy watching Jets football this season. It's gonna be a fun ride!
The Pats were horrible, a friend of mine was on that team, he was drafted in 1990. They went through Rod Rust and Dick McPhearson (sp) in a couple of years. When Parcells got there and drafted Drew Bledsoe they had the #1 pick overall to get him. Even in the early bad Bruce Coslet years we had, we could always beat the Pats.
Favre in my mind has a different kind of mindset, football games are only meant to be won and close is just another piece of shit loss. So, if they got the better team how do we still win? Thats #4. The Jets culture needs to lose this darkside crap.
That is such complete nonsense. people act like last year was 1996 and we had almost 10 years of futility. We were in the postseason just TWO years ago! Since '04 we have made the same amount of postseasons that favre did in a weka div and conf and we won as many playoff games! This is such nonsense. We have had a winning organization for over a decade now. Sure we have had a few down seasons but 8 of the last 11 seasons we have been at .500 or better. Only THREE AFC teams(Pitt, Indy and NE) have more postseason apps than us this decade.
Nyjunc is right. This is nothing. You youngsters should have seen what this looked like in Namath's last days. The Jets have been as competitive for the last decade or so as they have ever been. Sucks for us that this coincides with the Patriots' period of relative dominance, though.
I think Favre really does give everyone else the feeling that "at any moment..." and I think that helps you keep your composure even when things start going bad. In the past, I'd see a 14 point deficit and just say to no one in particular: Chad's not built to rally a team from 14 down. But favre is.
