I really like this SI article by Joe Posnanski. The thesis: Favre plays like a QB of even before his era.

I know folks here don't like Peter King, but there was also a nice nugget from him this week along the same lines about Favre. He asked Mangini something to the effect of "The 4th and 13 pass was smart football, but does a quarterback who gives a d@mn about his passer rating or INT count (or how much money he makes, if he's paid according to meeting contract goals) even try that throw?' King wrote that Mangini just smiled and shook his head no.

Thanks for posting, but I still hate Peter King because of his Massholish Chowd bias towards the Patsies.

Agreed. As much as I'd like King to choke to death on a ham sandwich, this was a good read.

I agree. Favre is definitely a throwback to another era.

"Last of the throw-hicans." That's pretty clever, and according to Google hasn't been used before.

BTW, this was NOT written by Peter King - some of you misinterpreted the OP. It was written by Joe Posnanski.

I was going to say...this can't be King. The poster's age was established as 41. King's easily over 50.

This was a fantastic read. Quite true. Sadly, Favre may be an old time QB in playing style, but he doesn't play for the city he embodied for so many years. We really don't have anyone like that anymore. Maybe Manning. Maybe. I'm sure Boston fans would love to say Brady, but no true son of Boston would be caught dead roaming NY in a Yanks cap. If anyone has the potential to become that kind of son of the city legend again, it's got to be Big Ben. A few more years of solid play and more sandwiches named after him and he'll be there.

But c'mon guys. We all already knew this.

Favre was the 1 player who still transcended teams as a fan favorite because of his style of play. Except Viking & Bears fans

But that was being tarnished even b4 this years Soap opera.
For the last 3 years he held GB hostage with his retire-no, 1 more year BS...and it hurt his appeal.
I know I got sick of it. Very bitch on his part.

I'm glad he's here and he looks like Favre.

Yeah, sorry I wasn't clear on that, statjeff is right. I was just bringing in that King quote to reinforce what Posnanski wrote. What I quoted was by Posnanski.

Good article and I agree this is a terrible era for QB's. You still need a really good one to win consistently there just aren't enough of them. There aren't enough Bill Walsh's around that really understand how to teach guys how to play in the WCO that so many teams run. That's probably not helping development?

You might almost be surprised to see how many Vikings fans really respect the guy. I live in Vikingland, and I'm often surprised at how many people who see me wearing Packers T-shirts want to come up and start jabbering about how terrific Favre is. It's always something along the lines of "I hate when we have to play against the sonofabitch, but goddamn, he's one of the best quarterbacks I've ever seen in my life. What a player!" Most football fans here have a ton of respct for the man.

Agreed. Bears fans for the most part are the same way as well. They hate him for good reason.

I don't like King but I liked that a lot and like him I know every one of those names and it seems like only yesterday that they were playing.

I remember when Majkowski went down and the next week I saw Favre's first start. He looked like a puppy chasing its tail and a 4th quarter come back was required and I remember telling a buddy at lunch that the next day, "I think we got us a quarterback." I have been a fan ever since.
