Interesting point, but I've never considered special teamers as starters. That may be unfair, and I don't want to belittle their contribution, which is huge, but I always thought that special teams is where backups earn their paycheck.
Last I checked...You have two kick returners, the Jets have Leon Washington on the deph chart as the Jets #1 Return man and Justin Miller is #2 on the deph charts as a backup. Same can be said for the Punt Returners...Leon Washington is listed as the Jets # PR and Dwight Lowery is listed as the backup.
So where is the backup kickers? I could never understand why there isnt a special spot just for backup kickers. A spot you can only fill with a backup kicker
Probably because it would take up a valuable roster spot. Plus its relatively easy to pick up a kicker at anytime during the season and they don't usually get injured.
If there is not, where the hell did Leon come from when Miller went down last year? Why do so many guys pratice taking kickoffs and punts in the preseason?
I see what you're saying but... are you telling me Bowens is a starter because he starts on kickoffs? The thread should read "how many 4th rounders are major contributers" if you want to include Leon.
leon washington is a running back. justin miller is a cornerback. wallace wright is a wide receiver. james dearth is a tight end. special teams is not starting, no matter how you slice it. it's very quaint to say ST is equal in weight to offense and defense but it just isn't. look at it this way: if you could have the best offense in the league, the best defense in the league or the best special teams in the league, which would you choose third?
A good Special Teams unit could set up a mediocre Offense with outstanding field position consitently, and the same with defense.
I agree with you here. Every ST player has a "position" at at least one spot on O or D. However an argument can be made that K, P, KR, and PR are starting positions as each has a specific spot reserved in the pro-bowl. I, however, do not consider Leon a starter until he lines up behind Burt for the first offensive play of the game with a RB in it.
