2) I was under the impression that Clowney is only out for the first six weeks with a broken collarbone.
Clowney should have been cut. Stuckey will be a solid #3/4 and Brad Smith looked good vs. the Giants. Henry can serve as the #5.
Thats exactly why he is on the team. A potential#3 (at best)/4/5 WR out atleast 6 weeks is a risky keeper to me.
After the way he's performed, it would be pretty stupid to cut him. Besides, i think they would've cut him already, if they didn't plan on keeping him.
everything depends on the severity of the break Seahawks just IR'd WR Ben Obomanu with a broken clavicle
I'm surprised they didn't put Clowney on PUP for the first 6 weeks. They must think he can come back much sooner.
they can't put anyone of them on the practice squad cause someone will sign them and they want k.c. b.r. and e.a. back next year in case favre retires.i can see e.a being out on the i.r. when chatman is elgible to return in wk 5 with some kinda mysterious injury.
The Jets knew (or at least should have known) that Chatman's suspension was a possibility when they signed him. He tested positive at the end of last season. http://www.profootballtalk.com/2008/08/30/chatman-tested-positive-for-masking-agent/ So, Mangini was aware of the issue. He therefore isn't going to cut Chatman over the positive test.
Even if he retires, you don't need to groom 3 QBs. Keep the two best younger QBs. You're just taking reps away from the others. Heck, there are a lot of teams now that only keep 2 QBs. It seems like a waste of a roster spot to keep 4 QBs.
I agree with you. Maybe Clemens can be used in a trade, although that might have happened earlier in the preseason.
qbs with 1-3 years in the league can be great bargaining chips come draft time steve walsh used to draft a qb every year for that reason.i agree that 4 is alot but the way the situation worked out with chatman its easy to do now. i wonder how it woulda shaked out if chatman hadn't been suspended
Bill Walsh you meant. I've seen that quote, too. The problem is Walsh did not exactly practice what he preached. He did not draft a QB every year. The following was originally posted by me here in May- Quarterbacks drafted by San Francisco during Bill Walsh's tenure as head coach- 1979- Joe Montana, 3rd round 1980- Dan Hartwig, 9th round 1981- Joe Adams, 12th round 1982- Bryan Clark, 9th round 1983- none 1984- none 1985- Scott Barry, 6th round 1986- none 1987- John Paye, 10th round 1988- none Walsh was the SF GM from 1999-2001 and then was a consultant for three years after that. QBs drafted by SF in those years- 1999- none 2000- Giovanni Carmazzi, 3rd round and Tim Rattay, 7th round 2001- none 2002- Brandon Doman, 5th round 2003- Ken Dorsey, 7th round 2004- Cody Pickett, 7th round Walsh may have said it is good to draft a QB every year, but he did not actually always draft a QB every year. I think it is interesting to look at one of his proteges- Mike Holmgren. He actually drafted some good QBs who were used as backups and then were traded. Green Bay 1992- Ty Detmer, 9th round 1993- Mark Brunell, 5th round 1994- none 1995- Jay Barker, 5th round 1996- Kyle Wachholtz, 7th round 1997- Ronnie McAda, 7th round 1998- Matt Hasselbeck, 6th round Seattle 1999- Brock Huard, 3rd round 2000- none 2001- Josh Booty, 6th round 2002- Jeff Kelly, 7th round 2003- Seneca Wallace, 4th round 2004- none 2005- David Greene, 3rd round 2006- none 2007- none 2008- none
Another perspective on the 53... It is important to remember that only 45 suit up each week, since 8 are inactive. Thus there will be TWO QBs inactive each week, which actually ADDS another player (non QB) to be available for each game. So the 4 QBs doesn't actually hurt us on game day, allowing for an additional position player to be activated who would otherwise not be suiting up.
I think the coaching staff got it right! I'm very happy with the final roster. I'd have switched Poteat for Carroll though no questions. That's my only criticism. I was really hoping Brown, Murrell, and Cummings all made the team. Their play deserved it. Also happy with the Oline final selections. Bender especially had to go. His play was just awful at every position. He'll make it to PS if they want to keep developing him, as will Garner. 7 WR's is a lot, but Wright is a good call for ST, and Clowney earned his spot. Good job overall!
Excelent point. Keeping 4 QB's is the Jets way of protecting thier assets. If Ratliff had not had the type of preseason he did we would only be keeping 3. Its not a major issue. Changes can be made all year long if needed.
I think the only player you could make a case for keeping is Poteat over Barrett - primarily due to salary. But the coaching staff has obviously considered that decision carefully. So I'm comfortable with their choice. Other than that I really don't think anyone can complain about letting these guys go. They were definitely the bottom tier of the roster. And remember 7 or 8 of them will end up on the practice squad. So we haven't said our final goodbye's to all of them yet.
