If you have no idea who Murrell is and you're wondering why this thread is here...watch your team. He's the guy on the second string D that really stands out.

I think that, technique wise, Murrell and Pace are the best we have in terms of getting off blocks, and getting in position to make a play...

I'm with you KOZ, he absolutely needs to make the team- and I'd love to see him get a bunch of opportunities to get after the passer in 2nd or 3rd and long opportunities...

Just think - last year we had Hobson at OLB. Now the coaching staff has the option of Pace, Gholston or Murrell for any given play. Talk about a serious upgrade of talent in one off-season !

Most of those negative and clueless posts are from April...if you still don't know who he is after this pre-season, then you haven't been watching the games.

Count me in as a fan. What's not to like about a Murrell?

I was watching him closely at the end of the game and was thinking the same thing as you guys. I am really pulling for him to make the team. I think he's definitely earned the opportunity.

    I mean this only half-sarcastically:

Our 4-3 defense is going to be pretty sweet this year.

Think about it: Gholston on one end, Murrell on the other, Pouha and Mosley in the middle with Spencer and Bowens surrounding Brad Kassell. That's a better front seven than 3 or 4 teams in the NFL and we haven't even used a starter!

agreed GS...I LIKE this kid and am rooting hard for him. This is a team that I'm gonna be sorry to see all but one or two guys go...this is the deepest Jets team I've ever seen-and from where I'm sitting and looking from I think this could be a SB CHAMPIONSHIP team

I don't know about the SB but I do agree with the comments on how deep the team has become.

Just think, a couple of years ago the Jets were signing UDFA by the bunches and were poaching guys off of other team's practice squads. The coaching staff worked hard to turn these guys into viable backups like DeVito and Clowney.

Three great drafts and an excellent FA class provided a bunch of new starters and several key backups. Now some of our practice squad guys could likely be snapped up by other teams. We've upgraded our talent that significantly.

It wasn't too long ago that folks had their fingers crossed, wondering if Andre Wadsworth could resurrect his career and become "THE" guy in NY...

What a difference a few months makes.

Come on. Nobody thought Wadsworth was gonna be "THE" guy. Maybe "a" guy.

can we discuss the depth and how many LBs are needed in the 3-4?

    if the starters go:
    Pace, Barton, Harris, and Thomas

then the backups - the definite backups - go:
Bowens, Gholston, and then who after that?
isn't Kassel out for a while (if not the year?), and Chatham is really nothing more than a STer.

to me, I'd think Murrell should make the team based on the way he's played, his experience, and the fact that we need the depth. however, it seems we need the depth more at ILB than OLB. so does he make the team or not?

generally, the Eagles are usually good about evaluating talent on the lines and LB spots. so Murrell could be valuable, but is there room for him behind Gholston and Bowens. also, has he been playing DE too, or just LB?

He's been playing DE more than OLB from what I've seen.

The backup unit I'd like to see:

    OLB ILB ILB OLB
    Murrell Bowens Cummings Gholston

But I think Chatham and/or Kassell stay due to veteran presence on special teams. That's especially true if Westhoff comes back.

Lots of solid LB in Philly over the years so yes, they can pick the good ones.

Also maybe that was a little "payback" for stealing Gocong from us during the 2006 draft.

I wouldn't be surprised if Murrell ends up supplanting Thomas in the starting lineup pretty soon.

Everytime I see Murrell in the game I see him rushing the passer though. How has he been in coverage? That would determine if he can challenge for a starting spot.

Knowing our luck, they'll try to put him on the practice squad and the Giants will snatch him up like our last few RB's and he'll get double digit sacks.
