I'm also jumping on the "Ok, maybe we DIDN'T make a mistake giving Pace all that money" bandwagon as well
The money is no big deal. Those contracts will be the norm from here on out, and its not because the Jets were one of the first to do it. Its just how much a starting player is going to cost these days.
Yeah, but I missed the first one for I missed the first six minutes of the game. His second sack was very good. It was not a garbage coverage sack or anything like that. He blew up the lineman. I was very impressed by his effort on a play where he did not actually factor in the outcome. In the 2nd quarter, Kenyon Coleman made a sideline tackle at or near the line of scrimmage. Pace was in pursuit and would have probably tracked down the runner if not for Coleman making the play. The field is 160 feet in width and considering the play went to the opposite side of where Pace lined up, he probably ran 110-120 feet on the play. It does not appear Pace is going to rest on his laurels and get complacent. Or be Bryan Thomas II. I always liked this quote-
Yea, Cakes you were right on about this guy. For comparisons sake...cause we gotta beat them and etc...I see Pace as our Vrabel in this defense. The big mofo who does it all and does it at a high level.
I like this comparison a lot actually. Pace was a monster tonight, and I expect him to be a pleasant surprise for when the season starts.
Now if only Gholston could look worth the money. I had really good seats tonight and had a great view of the D line. There were tons of plays where both Pace and Gholston were on the line and trying to come. Pace looked like he just shed or beat anybody he wanted. Gholston never got past anybody and he was never double teamed.
People talk about how the Favre news was great for the Giants b/c even as Champs they are flying under the radar a bit but it's been great for our big $ FAs b/c they aren't feeling the pressure they would have been w/o Favre b/c the attention would have been more on them. Even before we got Favre the first week or 2 of camp the talk was about getting Favre.
They get paid about the same to do the same job. Nope, I don't see the difference. One was seen as being overpaid by the Jets and only had one good year. The other was seen as the best pass rusher to come out of school. Nope, I still don't see the difference unless what you mean is one can learn his job while the other can't because of his age. I wouldn't use that as an excuse. About the only think he has to do is run past a defender and get to the QB. Nobody is saying anything about his coverage responsibilities.
Yeah I see the light now, thanks for teaching me. Clearly a rookie should be as good as a veteran by the third preseason game. Hopefully they just cut Gholston now, he is clearly a major bust.
Um... It's one pre-season game... I was very impressed with what I saw last night, but I think all Jet fans, after seeing what went down with Bryan Thomas after he got his contract, have to have their fingers crossed that Pace doesn't turn out the same way...
You can't exempt him completely just because he's a rookie... Especially when it comes to pass-rushing- since he was a DE in college... Gholston has demonstrated very little technique and virtually no ability to get off a block once the blocker gets his hands on him.... It's understandable that a lot of other responsibilities are going to take a while, since his run responsibilities and pass coverage ones are very different from anything he's done before.... But beating an OT around the edge on a passing play is something he should at least show flashes doing... I haven't seen it, and I'm a little worried....
Yes you can exempt him completely just because he is a rookie. It also didnt help him any that he got a late start on his offseason workouts. You have every right to be worried, as am I, I was never in favor of drafting him. But to expect him to be on the level of a veteran by his third preseason game is beyond ridiculous.
As long as rookies get paid what they do then it is not unreasonable to expect them to earn their money like everybody else in the league has to do. When the NFL has a NBA type rookie salary pool then it will be different. Now I am not advocating cutting Gholston but if you think for a second that owners wouldn't like the ability to cut half the rookies they sign then you are wrong. They don't because they can't not because they don't wish they could. With a rookie salary pool more in line with reality that will change.
That's why I said you can't exempt him completely.... One would expect a player who performed at the level he did, and was drafted as high as he was as a passrusher coming out of college to show some signs early on when going after the QB... I have yet to see him get off a block, except for a couple instances when he overpowered the blocker.... It's the same thing I was worried about when we drafted him, and he hasn't shown even a glimmer of progress in that area... Again, he gets a pass for now in a lot of areas. If he looks lost in coverage, that's okay, since he never had to do that before, and like you said, he got a late start. If he screws up a gap assignment, that's okay, since, again he's young and new to the system. But when he can't get off a one-on-one block, at all- even when it comes from a WR when he's trailing a play from behind- one has to hold him accountable.
I'm watching the replay again. Pace could be a pro bowl alternate the way he plays. I don't know if he could make it to the backup this year. Maybe next. I'll take it though.
