There are a few tough games on the sked.

At GT, home vs VT and FSU, at A&M, and at UVA, who killed us last season.

Plus, we're going with an inexperienced QB this season. Looks like 7-4, maybe 8-3 and a bowl in Orlando or Charlotte or even worse, the Emerald in SF.

Alabama had the #1 recruiting class...

and a lot of those recruits aren't going to do much RIGHT AWAY.

I'm not a Hurricane fan, but I'm pretty sure Robert Marve will be the starter.

Yeah, Marve (RS Fr) will be the starter unless Jacory Harris (Tr FR) completely blows up in the summer/preseason work. Marve would have probably been starting for much of last year had it not been for a preseason car accident. Marve is kinda small, just about 6-1 I believe, but has good mobility and a strong arm, most importantly though, he's very intelligent. I think he's one of those guys that will be the keys to getting the program back to where it's been, a four year starter.

A four year starter, huh? That means they are going to let their super recruit QB Harris ride the pine for 4 years?

I can definitely see Marve being a big contributor, but Harris will get the job sometime in the future.

    Dual QB system, maybe?

I think the Browns - 08's LB recruit Arthur and '09's RB commit Bryce - will be the main players that turn Miami around.

Harris isn't really all that much of a better prospect coming out of HS than Marve. When the Canes stole him from Alabama last year, it was one of the biggest gets of their recruiting season. Harris will play, but he's going to fall behind Marve now because of the added year of exp and the fact that physically Jacory isn't ready to play yet (because of his frame). Because he's not going to Redshirt, I could see him as a transfer candidate in a couple years, just because he is so talented, he deserves a chance to run his own team. That would suck, but it's feasible.

The Browns are going to be studs, no question. Next year with James, Cooper, and Bryce Brown in the backfield, it should rival those old stables 6-7 years ago. I do think that when it comes down to it, the key to it all will be the NW guys, namely Marcus Forston and Sean Spence, who might actually be the best two players on the team as freshmen.

Miami set to use 2-quarterback system in fall
By TIM REYNOLDS, AP Sports Writer

(AP)?When choosing among quarterbacks Robert Marve, Jacory Harris and Cannon Smith, Miami coach Randy Shannon found there was only one solution that made sense.

He?ll play at least two of them.

Shannon still hasn?t selected a starter, but announced Thursday that he?ll use multiple quarterbacks this season. But he?s not revealing which two have the inside track on field time.

The Hurricanes don?t have a single quarterback on the roster with any college snaps on their resume. Marve is a redshirt freshman, Harris a true freshman, and both were Florida high school record-setters before enrolling at Miami. Smith is in his first year at Miami as well.

?Whichever quarterback that we name, we?re going to play the other one,? Shannon said at the Florida Sports Writers Association College Football Media Days, again without specifying any of the quarterbacks by name and therefore not tipping his hand. ?We need depth at every position on the field and that?s the one position that we don?t have depth at because they?re young. They?re good quarterbacks, but they?re young.?

Shannon said it won?t be a platoon situation. The way he envisions it, one person will emerge as the clear starter, and another will play at certain times to get a feel for game action?in case that person gets called upon for a bigger role, for injury or any other reason.

Either way, it?s a new era for ?Quarterback U.? The school that produced Vinny Testaverde, Bernie Kosar, Gino Torretta, Jim Kelly, Steve Walsh and Craig Erickson is starting over, at least at the game?s marquee position.

?We can?t go into the season not getting this other guy any experience and then have something unforeseen happen, like it always does in football,? Shannon said. ?So we?re going to make sure both get reps.?

Shannon said he doesn?t expect to name a starter until before the Aug. 28 opener against Charleston Southern.

Marve led Tampa Plant High to a state championship and 15-0 record in 2006 after throwing for 48 touchdowns and 4,380 yards. Harris also went 15-0 as a senior, throwing for 49 touchdowns and 3,445 yards. Both were selected Florida?s ?Mr. Football? after their respective senior seasons. Smith had a strong spring for the Hurricanes as well, ensuring that it?s not just a two-man race for the starting job.

The Hurricanes went 5-7 last season, a year where Kyle Wright and Kirby Freeman took the snaps under center. Wright graduated and exhausted his eligibility; Freeman got his degree and chose to transfer to Baylor for his final season. The offense?which has undergone several changes in recent years ? simply didn?t ever click with either quarterback and Miami struggled offensively throughout 2007.

?We?re going to improve,? Shannon said.

    Notes

Shannon confirmed that defensive lineman Courtney Harris (Achilles? injury) will miss the entire 2008 season. ? Freshman DE Allen Bailey, who moved from linebacker to defensive end and now weighs in at close to 290 pounds, is still slowed by a pectoral injury but will likely be ready to start the season, Shannon said. ? Miami opens camp Aug. 2.

    -------

Looks like neither Harris nor Marve established themselves as the starter in the Spring, but considering they dont have any real game experience yet, it is just a matter of time before one of them emerges as the #1.

I still think it'll be Marve with Harris getting time. I'm more in thought that rather than neither establishing themselves, they've both just been impressive enough to leave the battle open. We'll see though, still a lot of time left.

    Marve favorite in 3-man race
Shannon to name starter next week
By Shandel Richardson | South Florida Sun-Sentinel
    August 16, 2008
CORAL GABLES - Robert Marve is becoming comfortable again.

For the first time in his collegiate career, he is feeling like the player who dominated high school games.

At times, it's even like he's playing in the sandlot. That's exactly what the University of Miami expected of their trio of young quarterbacks, who are competing for the starting job.

One of them came closer to being named the starter after Friday's scrimmage at Cobb Stadium.

"Camp has really helped me out a lot," said Marve, a redshirt freshman who is considered the favorite. "It's really slowing down the game for me and I can have a playground mentality."

Marve is in a tight race with freshman Jacory Harris, while freshman Cannon Smith appears to be the dark horse.

After saying all three were equal at the beginning of the preseason, coach Randy Shannon said Smith only played "a series or two" in the 95- to 110-play scrimmage. Shannon plans to make a decision sometime next week.

"In general, I feel like I did well," Harris said. "I came out there and made a couple of plays. The defense and the offense helped me, and we came out and executed a couple of times. Things are going smooth."

    Both quarterbacks committed a turnover.

Harris started the scrimmage, but played with mostly players who are likely second-teamers. On his second passing attempt, he dropped back to pass and rolled right.

As he set to throw, the ball slipped out of his hands and fell into the arms of defensive tackle Joe Joseph. He returned it nearly 50 yards before being tackled by Harris.

"Well, I got surprised when I was rolling out," he said. "I saw the blitz coming off, so I was trying to set up quick."

Marve, who threw for a touchdown, had his turnover late in the scrimmage. He was intercepted by freshman cornerback Brandon Harris. Shannon called the mistake "uncalled for."

"They did well pretty besides the [interceptions]," Shannon said. "Those are young guys, but I think we probably had about a 95- to 115-play scrimmage and we had two interceptions. We still don't need the interceptions, we don't need the turnovers and we have to keep going forward."

    -----------

I heard it was pretty astounding that Harris (who has to run around in the shower just to get wet) tackled a 300 pound DT.

Haha, Joe Joseph is a BIIIGGG man too, so that must have been hilarious to watch. I bet Joseph ran 10 yards free and 40 with Harris on his back.

And I hear that JoJo Nicholas has been really impressive in practice, and is just about locked in at one starting safety spot. Which means Reddick, Ponder, and Randy Phillips are battling for that other job. The Canes could have something in the area of 25 starts on the 2nd team at safety.

Marve suspended for the opener on Thursday night? That's the rumor going around.

Might be the Jacory show after all.

I heard that is the case. It stems from the incident he had in The Grove last year. there are a couple of other guys who may be suspended for the game, too, due to various academic/ classroom attendance issues.

Jacory got it done last night, and looked pretty good. But now who gets the start vs Florida. I'd still say Marve if he was the guy they wanted to start things before the suspension, but I know a few people say no way start a kid his first game in the swamp.
