Wouldn't Hawk be a much better fit in the 3-4? I know that Williams can play in the 3-4, but how good is he as an OLB? Even if we use a dual front, going back and forth between a 3-4 and a 4-3, won't we use the 3-4 more in Mangini's defense, so wouldn't a pure OLB be the best bet? Also, I'm a little leery of Williams work ethic. I seen people says he phones it in on some plays. What do you guys think?
Don't know if he is lazy, but If we are to use the 3-4, I don't see Mario Williams in that mold. Could be wrong, but we need guys who clog the line. I don't think he is that type. Would prefer it to go to a LB or a DT. Only one guy I can think of Is Ngata, but would the Jets go in that direction. Since I haven't heard anything so far in regard to trading Robertson, I think we are going LB first. Again could be wrong, but I would rather shore up one side of our game, and make that solid, and the defense is easier to do. More pieces to work with than offense.
how is Williams not big enough to play DE in a 3-4? maybe straight up weight wise, but hes too small? u kidding me? plus with his speed, i think he could possibly be a pass rush backer in a 3-4. but mangini has preached about hybrid defenses, and if you cant find a way to use one of the best prospects in some time then ur in the wrong profession. more importantly DL is a definite need, losing john abraham doesnt equate to losing barry gardner
Simple the drop off from Williams to the next def end is huge. Williams is the 2nd best player in the draft. Look at Hawk and there is less of a drop off after him when you look at the next 4 to 5 linebackers available. Either way they get a great player.
Mario Williams is probably going to be gone by the second pick so this whole discussion is probably moot. I think in the end when the Jets are at 4 with Bush, Leinart and Williams all off the board, D'Brickashaw Ferguson is the BPA and the Jets are in big time need of OL help INCLUDING LT...Adrian Jones is average guys!
What happened to the Jay Cutler wave? It whithered away while I was hiding in the BS Forum? Good riddance, I guess? I'll have to wait to see how vociferously Mike Mayock is pimping him these days.
I think Cutler shot up the charts like every year when the buzz about a player starts. I still think he has tremendous talent and a great arm and Farve type style. But he will need a year or so to sit to learn. I still would pick him over Leinart or Young.
Our need to replace abraham is greater than getting a OLB. And mario is much bigger with real good speed for his size, and will be a beast you cannot pass up. We are ok in the LB department. Barton is over 245lbs, hobson is 251 lbs, chatam is over 240, and vilma is the only one under 240, he will be our playmaker obviously.
I agree Penny. I want him, but I am pretty sure he is gone before we get a chance to pass the note to Tags.
I think he's tailor-made for the 3-4 actually. True, his speed will be underutilized, but he's a big, two way end. I think Hawk is great, but I just don't think its that hard to find a respectable OLB. I mean Barton is respectable and he was not that hard to sign. I just think the value of a Mario FAR exceeds the value of a Hawk, especially at #4. EDIT: I don't know where anyone gets the idea that Mario can play LB. I think he's a 3-4 end or a 4-3 end/tackle (tackle only in certain situations).
Agreed! Yeah, I was wondering about that myself, but I just wondered if someone knew something I didn't.
Hawk and Williams are both great players, but Hawk will only be a line backer in the 3-4 and 4-3 where as Williams can play DE in a 3-4 and a 4-3 and he might be able to play OLB in a 3-4. Williams has more ability to play multiple positions than Hawk that is why i feel he is a better choice.
The Saints aren't a lock to take Mario because they have Charles Grant and Will Smith, two young and very talented DEs. I think Mario will be available at 4 and so will Hawk. If they are both available, then it's up to Mangini and Tannebaum to choose the player that they feel best fits their system.
Cause mario is a Freakish type player theres only one DE in the nfl thats has his skill set thats julius peppers and he is probably the best all around DE int he game. its rare to get guys like this as in AJ case there are great lbs coming out every year.
exactly. both Grant and Smith were R1 picks. why would the Saints - with the #2 overall pick - want to simply upgrade rather than fill crucial needs? the main criticism our D received this Offseason was the loss of Abraham. Signing Dyson and the role players, along with drafting Mario, pretty much eliminates any major weakness in our Defense (with the exception of NT). cheers
