    Favre takes it easy
The Jets? aging/tired/candid gunslinger didn?t do a whole lot of throwing in the evening session - gee, what a surprise. I counted a total of 16 passes in the seven-on-seven and 11-on-11 drills, and many of those were of the short variety, none of them traveling more than 30 yards in the air. He reached back for the fastball only a few times, which probably was a smart thing. In the morning, Favre attempted 20 throws (not counting the warm-up drills and quarterback-receiver drills), but it was a taxing 20, if you know what I mean.

Most of the evening session was devoted to Redskins prep, as the offense and defense ran through their plays for Saturday night?s game at the Meadowlands, Favre?s Jets debut. WR Laveranues Coles didn?t participate in practice. He was off to the side, working the stationary bike. He limped off in the morning after running a deep route, presumably aggravating the same leg injury that kept him out of the pre-season opener in Cleveland. Looks to me like a hamstring, but I?m no doctor.

WR David Clowney, who left the morning practice for an undisclosed reason, was back on the field and appeared fine - except for his butter fingers moment. A pass from Kellen Clemens went off his hands, resulting in an interception. It was one of the few bad moments for Clowney, one of the early stars of camp.

A few other observations from practice:

Noticed that OLB Matt Chatham got some work at inside linebacker. Makes sense, considering backup ILB Brad Kassell (knee surgery) is out for the season. Right now, the top backups are David Bowens and Chatham, both of whom are new to the position ? There?s some keen competition for the third, fourth and fifth cornerback jobs. David Barrett, Drew Coleman, Hank Poteat and impressive rookie Dwight Lowery are in the mix. I?m assuming, of course, that Justin Miller wins the job opposite Darrelle Revis, but that?s not a lock ? I don?t see how they can keep rookie QB Erik Ainge. Frankly, he?s not that impressive, which probably explains why he gets very few reps. The Jets hate cutting draft choices, as most teams do, but they can?t keep Ainge unless they go with four quarterbacks. He?s practice-squad material.

Meanwhile, up in Foxboro, Tom Brady addressed the Favre trade. It was the third question into his Q&A today, and this is what he said: ?The Jets have made a lot of moves. They are a tough team. Miami has made improvements. Buffalo has made improvements. Any time you add a guy like Brett Favre to a team it definitely never hurts. We?re looking forward to playing Tampa Bay this week, and when the Jets come up, I?m sure they will present plenty of their own challenges.?

B-o-o-o-ring! Just the way Belichick likes it.

A final note: Kudos to the Jets? technical-support staff. Matt and Donald bailed me out of a potential computer crisis.

Do you guys think LC is going to be in and out all season or are they just being cautious because it's preseason? It's a good thing we have some young guys stepping up.

It's preseason. As long as he doesnt get dinged in the head, he'll be fine.

I didnt see the injury to him OR Clowney this a.m. i saw some fodder guy (Burgess?) who required some extensive medical attention to his calf/ ankle area- might have been bleeding, too.

And there was another fodder guy there today wearing fiddy-one. 51!

    Hmphh!

    ;-)

We don't have a WR that can cover for Coles. He's gimped, so I say it's time for the TE's to step up. Baker, Keller, and Franks need to make plays.

Would now be a good time to bring up the fact that I absolutely hated Erik Ainge as a college QB at Tennessee?

Great, Chatham at OLB now. What the hell is it with this piece of crap LB- why is he still on the team?

Can't we do better than Chatham for depth purposes?

He must be a good character guy. /sarc

He was overrated by Jets fans the minute he was drafted.

I didn't like Ainge when he was in college and i definitely didn't like the pick.

Sam Keller our of nebraska would have been a nice late round QB project. Cannon arm, smart kid...

Raiders picked him up as a free agent....wouldn't be shocked if he climbs the depth charts there
