I'm sick and tired of hearing about how talented the Packers are and how the Jets have nobody worth a crap. How quickly people forget that coming into last year the Packers were the youngest team in the league, had failed to acquire Randy Moss, had no offensive weapons, and basically stunk... in most people's opinions. Its true! Check back to any preseason "power rankings" (which is complete garbage) and you will see what I'm saying. Prior to 2007, Grant and Jennings were complete unknowns, the Packers had done nothing to surround Favre with the talent he needed, etc. Well, as we all know, the team went out and had a great year, in spite of the prognosticators' doom and gloom at the start of the season... Now, coming off that great season all of a sudden everyone thinks the Packers are stacked with talent. Grant and Jennings are bonafide superstars in 2008. Excuse me, but when the hell did that happen? Its such a joke. It really is. The bottom line is that every year is different in the NFL. The Jets were widely considered the better team (by a fair margin) coming into 2007, and now all of a sudden they stink because they had a bad year. The truth is, the Jets are not as bad as 4-12 and the Pack aren't as good as 13-3. I say to hell with the "experts". Trust the talent as you see it, not as you hear about it. I see the Jets team as every bit as talented as the Packers, if not more so.
Unless the Jets OL develops its zone blocking schemes in the next three weeks, Brett could be in for a long year. I'm not trying to be negative, but a good deal of his success last year came from an OL drafted and put together specifically with zone blocking schemes that, when combined with his quick release, contributed to their 13-3 record.
The rebuilt starting o-line looked very good in pass protection last night in limited action. I think we're going to be pleasantly surprised by how good that unit is.
As a Packer fan I have to respectfully disagree with the portrayal of Green Bay. I admittedly have less knowledge on the Jets than 99% of this board, so I will not foolishly make assumptions/uinformed opinions about them (and I'm not saying that you are doing the same with the Packers). However, Green Bay has been molding into the polished product it is now since after the 2005 season. As many know the Packers went 4-12 in '05 (Favre's only losing season), due largely to injuries to key players like Javon Walker, Robert Ferguson, and, at one point, 4 running backs including Pro Bowler Ahman Green. You know things are bad when 4th string RB Samkon Gado out of Liberty College goes down. While injuries brought down the team, the long term future was cloudy with Mike Sherman doing a shaky job at both general manager and head coach. Following the 05 season, Sherman was fired as head coach a year after being fired as general manager. Ted Thompson took over as GM after the 04 season and is responsible for drafting numerous key players that are key factors to Green Bay's success today. Perhaps you've heard of Aaron Rodgers, Nick Collins, Brady Poppinga, AJ Hawk, Daryn Colledge, Greg Jennings, Will Blackmon, Johnny Jolly, James Jones, Brandon Jackson, Mason Crosby, or Brian Brohm. I doubt outsiders recognize every name on the list, but they're all key players involved in Green Bay's past, present, and future success. Thompson is also responsible for diamond-in-the-rough finds in undrafted Ryan Grant and Atari Bigby, as well as the free agent signing of Charles Woodson. The notion that the Packers had no offense and 'basically stunk' up until last season is interesting to me. Keep in mind that the Packers have been playing with the league's youngest roster for a couple years now (even with aging Favre around) and won they're last 4 games of 2006 to 8-8, and actually were a Giants loss away from the playoffs (Another reason to hate on the Giants, as if its needed). The Packers finished the 06 season 9th in the league in yards per game, Brett threw for just under 3,000 yards, and Ahman Green rushed for over 1,000 yards, so it's not like they couldn't move the ball. And all this still with the youngest team in the NFL. Failing to acquire Randy Moss isn't that big of a deal because the Packers probably have the best 5 WR set in the NFL without him. The moral of the story is, contrary to your opinion, the Packers did plenty to surround Favre with talent, and they are going to be good without Brett too. I'm not saying they'll go 13-3 again (they wouldn't have even with Brett, tough schedule this year) but they'll contend for the playoffs every year, so long as Ted Thompson is setting up the roster and Mike McCarthy is coaching it. The Packers are not an accident or a flash in the pan. But if you disagree, I'm more than willing to chat
^i think you missed his point.i don't think he was bashing the pack as much as the experts who are saying the jets still aren't contenders
I was more focused on the inaccurate statements he made about the Packers, yes. His final point was his distaste for the pundits, yes, but he was trying to prove it by downplaying the Packers franchise, which is what I looked to debate. I think everyone knows the 'experts' are merely people with opinions like you and me, it's just that their opinions are more widely heard. If they really were experts, they'd probably be alot more accurate than they are.
Actually none of those opinions were my own. I was simply trying to illustrate the idea that a team can go from "stink" to "gold" very quickly in the NFL. The Packers surprised the vast majority of people last year. Everyone seems to forget. The team was considered to be poor coming into the season. Now all of a sudden they're viewed as VERY talented! So...what changed between then and now? They had a good season! That is all! The same personnel that stunk last year has turned to gold.
**Former** Packers fan here, and I think the Jets absolutely have WAY more talent than the Packers. I know a lot of Packers fans who have turned on Brett like to say that Thompson built a great team around Brett last year, but my impression was this: Favre singlehandedly carried the team for at least 8 games. The O-line was totally overrated, and it will show this year. The two tackles were good players, but aging and both brought in long before Thompson. The guards (would have looked like a disaster if Favre couldn't make insanely fast reads and get rid of the ball in <2 seconds. Clear advantage for the Jets there. The WRs on the Packers are pretty good, especially Driver and Jennings, but I think Cotchery is better than anyone on the Packers since Javon Walker. And don't let anyone tell you otherwise, the Packer WR 'YAC' was almost all due to Favre putting the ball in the exact right place at the right time. The guy who said the Packers have the best 1-5 WRs in the NFL is in for a rude awakening when he sees them without Favre running the show. The Jets have better running backs (I love what Washington can do) and TEs (especially if Keller is as good as it seems he might be). The Packers running game finally came around after teams got tired of Favre killing them with the pass. If Favre can grasp the offense (and if anybody can it's him) and everyone gets on the same page, expect big things. I'm not familiar enough with the Jets' CS to know whether they'll be able to facilitate this, but if they do, you all are going to be thrilled by the improvement Favre brings.
I love your optimism guy. I am a huge Favre fan, and I'm absolutely stoked that he's a Jet now. I think you're underestimating the talent on the Packers though, and I think Favre would tell you the same. Don't get me wrong, I think their is a hell of a lot of talent on this Jets team, I just think you're underestimating the talent of the Packers. You seem to know an awful lot about the Jets for a Packer fan. No disrespect meant, but I am wondering if you're truly a former Packer fan that is following Brett or if you're a Jet fan posing as that personality. Again, I mean no disrespect and if I'm wrong I apologize.
No, dude, definitely have never been a Jets fan before (I don't know why a poster would come back and impersonate someone else? Sounds kind of weird.). I have seen maybe 4 jets games in the last 10 years (2 involving the Packers). I was always a Packers fan, although I have to say probably more of a Favre fan. I grew up with him, and having watched every play of his for 16 years, while watching his personal trials and tribulations, I have to say, I pretty much damn near worship him. The term 'man love' gets tossed around always, and I don't have it for anyone, but if I did, it would be for Favre. He is the total package, as a person and a football player. So I was naturally crushed by the way my former team treated him, not just this summer but for the last 3 years, when it has been clear that Thompson was trying to push him out the door. In fact, my guess is he was more explicit about it this year because Favre's great 2007 season earned Thompson and McCarthy nice fat contract extensions, so TT could move past Favre and get 'his' guy in (which he had always wanted to do) and have job security during the rebuilding process. Anyway, I want Brett to win, and I am thrilled to death that he's a place where he's clearly wanted and the fans are excited to have him (especially after the way most of the fans/media in WI have turned on him in the most disgusting, classless fashion). I really don't know as much about the Jets' team as I might have made it sound. I've been doing a bit of reading and watching Youtube videos to find out what the team is like. One of the reasons I've registered here is to hopefully have some Jets die hards fill me in on your impressions of the roster and coaching staff. I never thought I'd change teams, but I always knew I'd have to root for whatever team Brett was on. The whole saga just made me so sad and disgusted, and it's so nice to see Brett wanted somewhere. I'm on the Jets bandwagon for the long haul after this, trust me. Regarding my assessment of the Packers talent, I do think the Packers have some on defense, but it's largely dependent on their two corners who are going to fall off the map at any time due to age. And they were always adequate to solid, never dominating. Anyway this is the time of year for predictions, and mine is that the Packers 13-3 record last year will be exposed as being the result of great play from Favre and a good deal of luck. Won't know for sure until the season begins. I've had countless fruitless arguments with Packers fans about this, and the only thing to settle it will be real football. I can't wait.
There is no doubt the Packers are more talented than the Jets at just about every position but that doesn't mean the Jets are crap and I don't think anybody has said that.
Our talent is very close tho theirs, they won 13 games playing in a weak division. they had a couple of good early season wins over NYG and SD but both teams were really struggling at that point.
Our talent wasn't close last year. Maybe it will be this year but either line, LBs, RBs, QB, DBs, you name it and they were all far superior to what we had. The comments you here from the media now is because nobody has seen the current team play yet. Yeah, they spent a lot of money but until they play nobody knows.
Last yera is over, remember 2 years ago we went into GB and humiliated them 38-10 when they had alot of that same talent. Last year we had the OL problems which trickled to every part of our offense. We have alot of talent, we have a nice young core which we added good vets around them this offseason. I thought GB was going to take a step back w/ or w/o favre this year and I thought we'd win 9-10 w/ or w/o Favre this year. The talent gap isn't wide at all if there is a gap.
well, let's break it down. They've got some nice DTs and some overachieving DEs. They've got a hell of a LB corps and the best man cover DBs in the league. THeir OL is solid and veteran, their RBs are semi-proven and their WR and TEs are good, but they can't win the game on their own. The JEts? unproven, but promising DL, a hell of an LB corps and a young DB corps with some holes, but also some real talent. A veteran, but new OL that, on paper, should be the strength of this team by the end of the year based on talent. RBs that are proven but unexciting albeit with x-factor Leon and WRs and TEs that are solid, but not going to win any game on their own. To me it sounds exactly like where the Packers were last year. They had some players unexpectedly fill BIG holes last year and we're going to need the same this year. I would prefer to be in our position of having to fill holes on the DL rather than skill positions, but obviously it worked out for them. In my opinion, the talent level is roughly the same, but the thing we have to remember is that they had FAvre helping the talent look better and we had Chad/Kellen making the talent look worse. I think no mater which side you believe you HAVE to think Favre ahs enough to win here, even if takes the D saving our asses at times and I personally think Favre is good for two more wins than we would ahve had with Chad or Kellen and that's enough for me, but if I had to say one way or the other, I think we have more defensive and offensive talent, but with all these new players, we have to prove it this year before we can really answer the question.
Sure I remember that, I was there. The point being made by this thread was why is everybody dissing the Jets and praising the Packers. I said they aren't. The only question I have heard asked was are the Jets better with Favre then the Packers are without him and most people are saying no. They are saying no based on last year's teams which is all they have to base it on until both teams go out and play some games. Ask that question after week 8 and the answer may be different.
I don't trust "expert" oipinions but since you brought it up all4 guys on NFL Live the other night said the Jets would be better than the Packers after this move(Keysahwn who hates us now, Tom Jackson, Cris Carter and the great broadcaster Emmitt Smith).
