The boards are pretty dead and full of draft talk so I thought I would change up the discussion... What would you like to see happen at the RB position for the 2006 season? From what Mangini has said so far, it sounds like Cedric Houston and Curtis Martin will be competing in training camp for the starting RB job in 06'. I am, along with many other jets fans, a huge fan of Curtis Martin, but this is probably his last year as a potential starter. I also like Cedric Houston ALOT. He really impressed me in the Miami game late in the 05' season. He was breaking tackles like he was eddie George, but showed decent speed as well. I compare him to Rueben Droughns. What would you do? I am in favor of letting Curtis Martin start, but let Cedric Houston have certain roles so that he can get on the field as well. Maybe give Cedric goal line carries and let him play when Martin needs a rest? Cedric has alot to offer to this team next year and I hope Mangini sees that and integrates him into the offense.
I say split them between Houston and Martin but put a healthy dose of Blaylock in as well because he is really the only guy with great speed, also the hot hand should get to run more in each game
I like Houston & feel that he can get job done. Drew from UCLA would be a nice choice if available in round 3-4.
I remember that as SOON as the season was over I was screaming for Cedric to start in 2006 and for him to run behind Brick...I think thats a NICE idea... #4 overall- D'Brickashaw Ferguson #29- Bobby Carpenter or Thomas Howard (pass rushing OLB's) #35- Max Jean-Gilles Imagine Cedric Houston Running behind D'Brickashaw and Max Jean Gilles...Talk about a load to handle...time to change my underwear
I think Mangini may agree with you...he has openly said there will be a competition for the starting spot...
i gave everyone specific roles. martin 1+2nd down. houston 3rd down and askew-short yardage. it could be switched up a little, with martin and houston switching, or houston and askew switching, but thats it
what about signing a lower level free agent to add to the mix. i have mentioned this before, but I think the Jets could get Najen ("The Closet Pooper") Davenport for pretty cheap. He is coming off an injury, so he can't be looking for much, played both HB and FB and is a "big" back that the Jets sorely lack, especially with Sowell gone.
I said this before. If we draft a rb who do we cut?? It seems like blaylock but it would cost more to cut him. I dont think RB is high on the prioroty list. If someone fall then we take them if not I dont see a RB in the draft this year. It wont matter RB dont need the same amout of time to develop that other postions do. We will be fine drafting a RB next year.
wouldn't houston have the easiest contract to cut, cap-wise? It seems to me that if you draft a RB on the first day, you have Curtis to mentor and Blaylock as the change-of-pace back, no? (obviously drafting a 1st day RB signals that Houston is not in the plans of the organization.
Let me start by saying that Curtis Martin has been a GREAT Jet and I have much respect and admiration for him. However holding onto (and worse yet starting) aging veterans because you feel you owe it to them is neither in the best interest of the team nor the player. With that said, I don't believe Houston is the type of RB that can carry the ball 30 times per game (and that is not the way successful franchises run today anyway). However, I think he can be a very effective change of pace back with 10-12 carries per game. I think the team's running game will be a problem until a young feature back is brought in. So, for that reason, I think we need a RB on day 1 of the draft. For the purposes of the poll, I voted split time. DbJ
We will never draft a late round RB that we feel good enough about to cut anyone already on the squad. Huston is a power upfield runner between the gaurds. Blaybock is a quicker 3rd down back who can hit the edges. Sowell is a good "mix it up" and can block in the back field and catch passes. Sorry, but CM is the odd man out. If we draft a power FB and someone is cut, it's been nice knowing 'ya Curtis.
I hate to say it, but Houston IS one dimensional, it's not just something that people are making up to discredit him. He's not fast, and he isn't sure handed. If we draft an RB, he's a goner, guaranteed.
isn't sure handed? Now it seems like you are making stuff up...against miami he had 4 receptions for 40 yards...(not saying that makes him a good receiver...just an example) truth be told I have no idea if he is sure handed, but I wouldn't say he has bad hands...
have blaylock run the third downs and then have martin and houston switch off on 1st and second. For now u have to start martin but later in the season u can switch to start houston
