I would have to say Shuler is #1 overall........I'm not 100% positive but I think this picture of Shuler may have been the 'giving him the business' game when Marty Lyons and Jim Kelly went at it. And if it was, Shuler wound up catching the game winning TD pass in the final seconds.....
While my heart tells me I should vote Barkum #1.....I'd have to vote Mickey Shuler, Pete Lammons and then Barkum... Although honorable mention goes to Jerome Wiggins....He has made a nice career for himself. My first jersey bought in Herman's sporting goods (if you are under 30 you have probably never heard of the stores) was an apparent mistake. It had #14 on the front and #83 on the back
Probably for the same reason that Emerson Boozer called the Dolphins the Marlins on the radio the day that Curtis Martin broke Boozer's rushing TD record.
From Barkum's bio on the Jets' website: PERSONAL: Wife Linda ...daughter Laiysha 7, son Jerome Jr. 2 ... has degree in health and physical education nicknamed "Gee" ...cousin of former Detroit Lion Lem Barney enjoys working with kids ...worked as substitute teacher in his hometown during offseason ...was a standout all-around athlete at 33rd Ave. High in his birthplace and hometown of Gulfport, Miss. Who gives their college degree a nickname?
It almost looks like they left out some punctuation between the college degree and the nickname. Maybe one has nothing to do with the other. I can still hear Glickman, up there with Dave Herman..."Gee Barkum lined up to the right, Jets driving towards the closed end of Shea Stadium..."
Marty Glickman was a trip to listen to, "A good hard slashing run by Clark Gaines 5, 6, 7 yards....second and 7"
Merle Harmon was the best..." Joe Willie barks the signals, Joe Willie drops back to pass, he looks, he throws long, down the middle and it's caught by Sauer, a great leaping catch down at the Patriot 7....timeout here at the Big Shea with the score the Jets 37 and the Boston Patriots 7....
I remember him doing some Jet pre-season games late in his career. Didn't realize he was our play-by-play man.
"And the Jets line up in the standard pro set . . ." Glickman rocked. My dad used to put the radio on while the game was on tv when I was a kid. Good times.
Yes, I know. I was just wondering if anyone else caught Boozer's comment on WFAN the day of that game. I was hanging out at our tailgate, and said, "WHAT?!!" The Miami Dolphins, the Florida Marlins, same difference!
Haha, awesome. My Daddy used to sit down with a Pabst Blue Ribbon in our livingroom in Flushing during away games. Pretzels in a plastic bowl set on a TV tray next to his favorite chair, smoked black market Cuban cigars, yelled, "Son of a b*tch!" roughly every three minutes. Looking back on my early childhood, I realized years later why my Daddy was perpetually pissed off September through December, from Sunday until at least Tuesday. Anyway, some of our Jets had great, great football names. There were threads on that in the past. And hey, matt robinson 17. Long time, no see.
