Remember the days when the Mets had infielders that could field routine ground balls? Me neither.

2 games below .500 + another series loss to a last place team + Omar Minaya's pledge of support = adios Willie!

Yet another exhibition of uninspired and incompetent play from the boys. It's hard to believe that a year ago the Mets were viewed as one of the best teams in baseball (and Reyes one of the best players).

guys if youo know me you know im a yankee fan. and you know that I try to be fair and when the yankees suck I say the yankees suck(check out the threads froom last weeks met series). so I have to ask this question but I want to make sure you guys donot think im trying to be a dick................what the fuck happened to jose reyes?? I dont watch the mets enough but I do remember watching this kid getting better at alarming rates a couple years ago. Is ther like a pinpoint time last year that he started suckin balls or what? did he have an injury that might be still bothering him? how did he go from a budding star that couold do everything to what he seems to be now? Has wright progressed as much as you guys thought he would also? I remmeber the talk about a year and a half ago that the wright/reyes combo MAY be better than jeter/arod. This talk has gone away big time. WTF happened???

I think it was a little after the all star break last year when Reyes just tanked completely. He just hasn't been the same since. I have no idea what happened. I think up to that point he had a .400+ on base percentage and was swinging the bat well too (I think he was up over .310). He ended up with a .350 or so OBP, which was a terrible drop off. He just can't get on base anymore; I honestly don't know what turned off in his head but someone's gotta get in there and fix it before this rut gets too deep. He's still only 24 so he's young but the light's gotta come back on soon.

Reyes is the $64,000 question on this team right now. There are a ton of theories as to why he's tanked since the first two months of last year:

    A) He resented Willie embarassing him (solely, when Willie didn't bench others) by benching him for not hustling in Houston just before the All-Star break. I don't buy this one because he didn't run out ground balls twice inside a week before Willie singled him out.

    B) Jose Valentin was a good influence and when he got hurt Reyes lost a mentor. This one I do buy, by far Reyes' best baseball was when Valentin was in the clubhouse.

    C) Castillo and Rickey Henderson (first-base coach for the second half of last season) have both been bad influences. In this case, it's probably impossible to tell unless you're there. But having Castillo constantly giving up outs in the two hole isn't helping on the field.
