-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Jets Confidential Jets taking it slow with Miller and knee By Hoss Aultman Posted May 24, 2008 Jets cornerback Justin Miller hurt his knee last summer, and he's still working his way back to full health. The Jets are taking it slow with Miller, and he's still not full go. "We are still working through things," said Jets coach Eric Mangini. "When you move from the weight room stuff to the on-the-field stuff you want to take it slow and err on the side of caution." Mangini thinks Miller will be 100 percent by training camp, but for now, they are being careful with the talented kick returner. "We will just keep progressing him along and the movements and things and make sure that each step is right," said Mangini. __________________
we really dont know how good either of them are as kick returners, i believe that Westhoff made them what they were, no without him we will see how they do.
I'd rather not risk Washington returning kicks if we don't have to. Miller was a pro-bowl receiver 2 seasons ago, it would be nice to have him return to that form, you can never have too many options. As for his CB skills, outside of Revis nobody on the team is that good.
People have forgotten about losing Westhoof, that is HUGE. That was the biggest and possibly only negative of the offseason. No matter who was returning kicks we always had threats for TDs- whether it was Chad Morton, Cotchery, Miller, Leon, even Craig Yeast & Jonathan Carter had success. The good news is I remember reading where Westhiff will still be invovled as a consultant, any help he can provide will be a good thing for us. Think about the different # of return men that returned kicks/punts for TDs for us since Westhoff came aboard in '01: Chad Morton 2 KOR Santana Moss 2 PR(plus 1 in postseason) Jonathan Carter- KOR Jericho Cotchery KOR Justin Miller- 3 KOR Leon Washington- 3 KOR 10 KR TDs and 2 PR TDs in 6 seasons is pretty amazing although from '97-'00 we had success as well as Leon Johnson had a KR and PR TD, Aaron Glenn had 1 and kevin Williams had 1. Since 1997 we have had a total of 16 KO or PR TDs, prior to 1997 our last PR for a TD was 1990(Terance Mathis' record setting 98 yarder again st Dallas) and our last KOR TD was 1986(I believe it was Bobby Humphery at Cincy in Dec of '86 during our 5 game losing streak to end the year).
the whole point of having miller is that we dont run the risk of washington going down on a kick return.
Didn't Westhoff sign with the Jets as a consultant? I hope those schemes he draws on napkins find their way to Jets HQ. I think certain people are giving Justin Miller too tough of a time. He has the physical tools to be a great #2 or #3 behind Revis. The kid has only barely played over 2 seasons in the NFL. He has the most potential out of all of the Jets CB not named Revis.
Miller was playing well as a corner at the beginning of last season, despite the hamstring injury that he suffered in training camp. The knee injury took him completely out of the season but he was doing well until that point. If he plays like he did at the beginning of last season, he should be our starting corner opposite Revis.
Miller has improved at CB. And having him at full strength is crucial. Think about it, put both Miller and Washington back there for kick returns, can't kick it away from both of them!
speaking about CB's, what was the point of releasing dyson, he was better than these guys no? i like barrett poteat and miller but not as starters
Miller has always had the elite physical tools to be a top-flight corner. However, he's yet to put it all together. I would not feel comfortable if Miller is starting next to Revis on opening day. Hell, I wouldn't feel comfortable with Barrett or even Poteat. I hope that this team snags somebody before the season starts a la Pete Kendall or Eric Barton. But back to Miller: I definitely echo what RobA said. That would be a lot of fun to use a dual KR formation.
As a return guy? I hope so. As far as his cornerback skills, I am confident he will be able to suck just as badly..
...Soo.. B/c Washington is just as good Miller, Miller is expendable? You do realize that having 2 pro bowl caliber Kick returners can be a HUGE asset, right? That means that teams can't just kick away from the one big play guy. Also, Miller is still a very young CB, and frankly, if you don't notice the physical skills he has to develop w/...you're crazy. At the very LEAST he's a 4th or 5th corner for obvious passing downs, who is an elite kick returner. At the most? STILL an elite kick returner and a solid # 2 corner. There are alot of people on this board who can't grasp the idea of Miller being anything less than a nickel back. Why is that? For his returnm ability ALONE, he is an asset...and I can guarantee you w/ his physical skills we could do a LOT worse a dime back!
Hopefully Justin steps it up during training camp and wins the #2 spot and shines like Revis did last year and builds from that. Watching Justin over the years on special teams has been amazing but if he played with that same consistency as a CB our secondary would be special since it's already young with future pro-bowlers.
Dyson was good but he broke his leg and never was the same afterwards. He just couldn't play at the NFL level anymore.
Dyson was soft on run support and wasn't the same coverage guy after he broke his leg. If Miller can step up this year and win the #2 spot that gives us two guys at corner that could be useful against the run. Miller's tackling skills leave something to be desired but if you watched his game during his rookie season you know he likes to hit - even if it is just dropping his shoulder into WR's. Wasn't man coverage supposed to be his strength anyway? Mangini wants to focus on man coverage more than zone this season so one would think that this decision plays into Miller's game more than anyone else vying to start next to Revis.
Having Miller back is more important, than many think. 1. As Kurt said, teams can?t kick away from Leon, because Miller is as dangerous. 2. I think Leon was limited on O last year, because we didn?t have a viable backup for him on KR/PR, with Miller back, Leon might get a bigger role on Offense. 3. Miller made some progress last year, and with our CB situation, we should be happy about every about every guy. 4. With all the 3-4 Widesets teams run these Days, you need a 3rd CB. Miller looked good at Nickelback last year, if he can continue to do that, he?s a very valueable member of our D.
Exactly- having those two would guarantee us field position at the 35 or better, either from a squib kick or a return. Miller is also a better returner than Leon IMHO- he has phenomenal instincts and knows exactly when to cut and pick up blocks. They're both great but Miller is better. No other team in the league would have this advantage. Another intriguing possibility is to line up Miller in the endzone and Leon around the 15 to pick off any squib kick. This is not a bad problem to have.
