This team is the fourth youngest team in the NFL. Wait a minute, that doesnt make sense. OHH yes it does the media just likes to take something negative about the Jets and run with it. So this team is being built the correct way, with a lot of youth and some vets. So its not Same old Jets, its SAME OLD MEDIA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! http://www.jetscentral.com/?p=1301#comments
They see our off-season acquisitions and interpret it as a coach trying to get a winning record to save his job, even though its guaranteed through 2009. The media knows nothing, considering they are highly uninformed.... look past it and don't pay attention- my life has gotten easier by not giving a shit. Most of us know what this team is doing and will be patient with its development, let the media do its job. Also, we don't need sensationalist thread titles- just let us know whats going on. We get enough sensationalist bullshit on a daily basis.
I think the biggest issue with your FA signings is that when the youth on your team is really ready to compete (specifically Clemens) the FAs (Faneca and maybe even Jenkins) might be too old to make a run with them.
NDmick, you know I think the media knows nothing on purpose. These guys are trying to get us to pay money for fish wrap. Their job is to stir the pot, and they will say anything and everything that they think will agitate. Knowing that, we still get a lot of info from the crumbs, but you do have to hold your nose to do so.
I'd be more concerned about T Jones than Jenkins or Faneca. Linemen tend to be able to go longer into their 30s than RBs, especially if they see that they're on a contender. Fixing the lines now was really important to the development of the team as a whole. The lines completely stinking was making it difficult to determine where any other problems were. We should now have respectable lines to develop the team from. If some of these older players don't last for the next five or so years, we'll be able to find replacements as they are needed at a reasonable pace instead of trying for a sudden lineman draft miracle.
They ARE trying to win now, by filling in the missing pieces of the puzzle. I don't understand why they can't be building a solid team while trying to win at the same time...that is the point after all. Building a solid, competitive team = job security. They go hand in hand.
I hate arguments like this. No offense, but players don't develop in real life the way they do in Madden, where they play a year, and then depending on their year performance, they might get a +2 to arm strength and a +1 to awareness and pass accuracy going into next season. What the Jets did this offseason on offense was provide whoever the QB is with a real line to block for them. They gave Thomas Jones a real line to block for him, and a real FB to blow up linebackers. They gave the offense a real vertical, over the middle threat, something we have not had up to now. The offense has improved dramatically. Our QB now has tools, whoever he is. If he can not win with those tools, then there will be no development, because we will be looking for a new starting QB in '09.
Kris Jenkins is 28 years old. Faneca I can understand, the guy has been around a while and I don't expect him to play at the same level for more than a couple more years, but hopefully we will be building a young core on the line that can eventually replace him. Your point about Clemens is very valid, though. If he doesn't step up this year, I think the Jets are at least 2 years away from making a run at anything.
I am happy with the work that the Jets did in the offseason. they are trying. All I can ask for after the Giants win the Superbowl. it is clear they are not yet a playoff team but I think they will be in 2009.
99% of the media does not do any homework when making stupid statements like that. They saw all our acquisitions and blindly decided "they much be getting over the hill with all these FAs."
The win "now" concept is more of a SB run mentality. We here all know that we aren't in that position this year, but you make a good point.
Isn't every team in the NFL a win now team? I don't think any teams say "hey lets lose for a year or 2 then we'll put it together.
i've been saying we were a built team now even before the draft, meaning a competive team this season [playoffs] and then next season w/some offseason moves and the draft, i would hope this team is ready to contend for a sb
I think you hit it right on the head. Every team is going into the season trying to win with what they have. Owners will tolerate a losing season here and there because it is impossible to always win, but if a team doesn't put out sooner or later then that's pretty much it for that regime.
I agree that fixing your lines was paramount to trying to compete as a team. But if Faneca and Woody (and he seems most likely) regress it may come just when Clemens has fully understood the game. Jones hasn't taken a ton of carries over the years and I think you'll be able to get more out of him than most RBs his age. Don't sleep on Chapman spelling him either, he's another big physical back, though he is not nearly as good as Jones.
No offense taken. I made my post under the assumption that Clemens is your starting QB and that he will need to make changes to his game to be an efficient starter. I agree completely that the team around him sucked last year, but it isn't just as simple as putting talent around a guy. Speaking as a Giants' fan, Eli had talented rosters around him the last two years but just was not playing at a high enough level to keep us competitive in the playoffs. This season he elevated his level of play (at the very last second possible, week 17) and was a huge reason we were able to win SuperBowl XLII. I also don't think you give up on QB just because he can't work with some talented weapons, at least you don't give up right away. Even the most talented WR will not be effective if he and the QB aren't on the same page. The Jets may draft another guy if he struggles this season or start to groom Ainge, but I think Clemens is your guy right now and you're going to have to experience his growing pains at the QB position.
