I am OK with the Gholston pick. My issue is that I think he will either be a pro-bowler or a total non factor. I just do not see a middle ground with him. However, I am estatic that we drafted him and not Matt Ryan. Ryan has to be one of the more over-hyped prospects of recent times. And for some reason, all the analysts just totally gloss over all of his weaknesses saying that his "intangibles" outweigh what he has done on the field. When I look at Ryan, I see a Pennington clone. They are really amazingly similar in college in skill set, and demeanor. A barely adequate arm. Very intelligent and well spoken, and someone who will consistently get overrated because of his charisma enthusiasm and intelligence just like Pennington has. He is going to be a "game management" QB. However, unlike Pennington he shows the propensity to throw a lot of interceptions. For some reason analysts think this "Brett Favre" like characteristic will be fixable in the NFL. I do not really see why. It is an interesting choice for Atlanta. In almost every way he is the ploar oposite of Vick. There just cannot be two more dissimilar QBs. But that might be in the long run a great thing for Atlanta. I am just glad he is not a Jet. Like Pennignton he will be a never more than mediocre game manager.
Ditto this thread. Can't stand the guy. Overrated. Of course in retrospect, I think it's clear the Jets "interest" in Ryan was a smokescreen. We were targeting Chris Long all along according to SI.com. Of course, we couldn't tell the Rams we wanted Chris Long, because they'd never let us trade for the player they wanted as well. So instead, Tanny said, "Oh man, we LOVE Matt Ryan! Please let us have your spot so we can get him ahead of the Falcons!" Smart play, didn't pan out. Oh well.
It really depends on who drafts these guys. Had the Jets drafted Ryan espn etc would be calling him the bust of the draft.
I go to Boston College, so I have seen a LOT of Matt Ryan over the years. I think it has not been stressed enough that BC has terrible wide receivers, and Ryan was able to succeed DESPITE them. BC has always been a team that prides itself on a good O-line and a running game (run out the clock), but with Ryan at the helm we turned into a high powered offense that could flat out put up points. He is tall, smart, dedicated, and has a strong and accurate arm, not to mention his ability to evade tackles and perform in pressure situations. I know I have a biased opinion, but I consider Matt Ryan UNDERRATED at this point because of all the people claiming he is over-hyped.
Matt Ryan has an above average arm, anyone saying otherwise is just wrong and has never seen him throw.
That is a great point. There's no way of ever knowing this for sure, but I believe if Gholston had slipped to N.E. all the gasbags on ESPN wouldn't be mentioning 'the games' he took off. ALL we'd be hearing is the 14 sacks last year, blah, blah, blah. It would be lauded as the best pick of the draft because he'd be exactly what they need and they took him...
Definetly. The Jets can never do anything right,that's the everyday story in sports media. Only 2 days before the draft when it looked pretty certain the Jets would land Gholston,the anti-Gholston talk about taking games off etc started.
Yknow, Im not a fan of Ryan either, but for me its mostly because he has the personality of a muppet. Most of the actual football criticisms of him are pretty much baseless. First of all, yes he threw a lot of interceptions, but he also threw 40+ passes in most BC games last year, interceptions are inevitable when you cant run the ball, not to mention their incredibly average receiving corps. And as far as arm strength, Im a Virginia Tech fan, and you won't find any VT fans who question his arm strength. Go back and watch the end of that game, and then tell me his arm isn't good enough, he made some incredible throws there in a game that his team by all rights should have lost. Hell be a solid quarterback in the NFL, I have very little doubt of that. But I still didn't want him for the Jets.
Nicely put Stu. Had we drafted Ryan, it would have filled a glaring real need. All the news coming out of the NCAA/NFL is that next years QB class is going to be even weaker, because lets face it, this draft has been increadibly weak at QB, so when/if KC or even CP still don't pan out , we are either trading for vet next year or drafting, lets hope its not the latter. Ryan will be fine, even behind the Falcs o line.
I agree, watched Ryan play against my Spartans in the bowl game, wasn't impressed, he over threw and under threw a ton of guys all game.
No... he wasn't top 5... He was a very good QB, and I'll not dispute that... but top 5 QB's have all the tools and can make all the throws... even pre surgery, if you sat on the outs, like the Raiders did in the Playoffs, he can't win a game for you. Why? Because he can't make ALL THE THROWS.
Nothing for nothing but so much can change in a year it is not even funny. Brohm would have been a top 5 pick last year and this year he is a late second rounder. You never know how a QB can develop or go the opposite route over a years time. I was not enamored with Ryan at all.

The QB's we have, all 4 of them, would not start on over half the teams in the NFL. Yeah, good thing we didn't draft Ryan. Love his game or not, he would have been an upgrade.
