Not that we didn't suspect it already, but PFT is "reporting" that Gholston was # 3 after C.Long and McFadden. Not surprising. However, it does mention the Jets tried to get up to #2 to pick Long.

    GHOLSTON WAS JETS’ THIRD CHOICE
Posted by Mike Florio on April 28, 2008, 11:39 a.m.

The New York Jets selected linebacker/defensive end Vernon Gholston with the sixth pick in the 2008 draft.

As it turns out, however, Gholston was the Jets’ Plan C.

The Jets initially wanted to jump up to No. 2 to get defensive end Chris Long, according to Gary Myers of the New York Daily News. But when a deal couldn’t be struck, the Jets opted to focus on running back Darren McFadden.

And when the Raiders picked McFadden, then Gholston become the focus.

The effort to move to No. 2 went nowhere because the price that the Rams put on the transaction was “exorbitant.”

Makes sense. Long is great, McFadden is great. Ryan and Dorsey were not needed. Although I am happy Ryan wasn't ahead of Gholston since he is not good. I guess those Ryan reports were smoke screens. Nice.

Granted that most of the participants in these forums would have been happier to see Chris Long at the sixth spot, but GHOLSTON is the beast that I think all of us had hoped for.

So the incessant negativity the pervades the Jets community ought to ease up a bit until these draft picks start to actually perform on the field. There's just no pleasing some of us.

I dont understand this, of course he was their 3rd choice. Don't you think the team that had the 15th pick most likely got their 13th choice or something like that.

Shouldn't you be on a Raiders board now?

I am going to assume you are quite young, but i will only respond with this.

How can someone be labeled a bust when he hasn't even stepped on the field for the Jets? Simply, the can't.

Can you please post the quote where he says he doesn't like to practice?

yea just like all jets fans having orgasim over dewyane robertson i knew he was a bust from day one because of his combine workout he didnt belong top 20 and yet we trade a 13 and 22 for him...5 years later everyone calling him bust of the decade for the jets...same will happen here with vernon gholston

it really isn't that much of a stretch to say that Gholston will be a bust. He is a high risk - high reward pick.

again, where did he say he didn't like to practice?

anything the Jets did in the draft would of made some people happy and some think it was the worst pick. We all just have to wait and see what happens and hope for the best. Remember, the Jets did not have the first 5 picks, they had #6.

I'm sorry, am I missing something here?

With the SIXTH pick, the Jets got the guy they ranked THIRD.

That sounds like a pretty damn good result to me.

You don't have to live in Oakland to become a Raiders fan. It's obvious that you only like(d) the Jets because they had a shot at McFadden.

Most of these kind of people already left...it's your time now.

It you don't have respect for Thomas Jones and Leon Washington, then you aren't a real fan, kid.

Thomas Jones is 30 years old, and has FRESH legs. He's far from being a dinosaur. Washington isn't expected to carry the load, so he can lack height. I bet you don't rag on the more flashy Maurice Jones-Drew, who is 5'5.

Alien Coles? I've never heard that one before?

It's never to late to hop on the Patriots' bang-wagon.

It was the guy the Jets ranked 3rd based on their need. J.Long was already off the board and Dorsey is a 4-3 DT. So, based on who they hoped would be available at #6, they got their 3rd choice.

I don't read it like that at all. Gholston was the third player on the Jets board and they got him with the sixth pick. Now, would it have been better to get the guy they ranked 1 (Chris Long) or 2 (McFadden)... sure it would.

But getting the No.3 player on your board in the sixth spot is pretty good.
