Why wouldn't you be a fan of the Mets. They are the "New York Mets", and have been at the same site in Queens since their origin, and will continue to be for the next 60-80 years in their new stadium.

I'm a Yankee fan, and I would've been equally opposed to it if they had moved to Jersey like it was rumered back in the late 90s.

Now, I understand it's financially good for the franchise, and easier on the players with the travel and such, but why should I have any sympathy for them? It's their job to accomodate the fans in some capacity. If they have to bite the bullet and move to New York and remain at Hofstra to ease the travel burden, all the better. But having a practice/training camp facility in New York is the LEAST they can do as it is.

I guess I have a somewhat different interpretation of what New York actually stands for. I guess I'm taking a more strict stance on it than you are..."letter of the law" so to speak, but it's what I feel, and I can assure you that many others feel the same way. That doesn't make them/us wrong. It's just the way we look at it, and it's something the Jets need to consider, do research on, and deal with. They can't expect everyone to remain hush hush as they abandon the entire state which they were born in.

You stated if you were a younger fan you'd have no connection to the Jets if they were 100% in NJ.

Well when I was a younger fan, the Mets were 100% in Queens (as were the Jets) and I connected just fine.

Now onto the Jets move.. Why do they need to consider anything? It's their business. If they can do business more economically and help the bottom line by moving, why shouldn't they? It's a business, as mch as we don't want it to be. It's not going to cost them any fans. For every fan they lose, they'll gain one or even more.

You are looking at this through your "Queens" glasses and missing the point completely as well as ignoring history.

First, as for the Jets being born in and needing some tie to New York City, the city has screwed the Jets over time and again. The city builds Shea and the Mets become the prime tenants. Throughout the 60s and 70's, the Jets aren't permitted on the grass at Shea until the Mets finish the baseball season. In 1973, the Jets lost a home game because the Mets went to the World Series. Then Hess asks for a better facility in the early 1980's because, let's face it, Shea is a dump and too small for football. NYC says no and instead builds a new tennis center???? Then Johnson buys the Jets and proposes to build the best sports facility in the world , a guaranteed cash cow for NYC, and to build it in the most visible location in the US - Manhattan - in an undeveloped area yet. And NYC says no!!! And many supposed Jet fans said no for ridiculous reasons - no tailgating, traffic (on the West Side of Manhattan on a Sunday???), high ticket prices, phantom PSL's, etc. So if you are the Jets, what would you do??? Can you say fool me once, twice, three times???

As for no longer being in NYC in any way - I hate to break the news to you , but the Jets have had no association with NYC for over 20 years. They play in NJ and practice in Nassau County. How is Nassau County any more related to NYC than Westchester or Bergen or Fairfield County????

As for owing something to the fan base and maintaining some tie to New York - why???? Why should the Jets stay on LI and "travel" to home games???? There are 20 million people in the NYC metro area. 77,000 of those have season tickets and maybe 10-20,000 go to pre-season practices at Hofstra. For the rest of the fans, the only association they get is from watching the team on television and coverage in the media. The Jets could play on the moon for all most people know.

And your logic about a team needing a tie to NYC for fans to have a rooting interest is completely misguided and myopic. Who should NJ residents root for - the Nets and Devils and no pro football team??? What baseball team should fans in Connecticut root for - no team has "ties" to their home state. I guess its only UCONN hoops for those folks.

I have been a Jet fan all my life. I grew up on Long Island and rooted for them. I went to college for four years in upstate NY and rooted for them. I went to Law School in Queens and lived a mile from Shea and got season tickets and rooted for them. I lived in NJ for three years and kept my tickets and rooted for them. I moved to Connecticut for 10 years and drove over 60 miles each way to home games and still rooted for them. Now I live in NJ and I still root for them. I couldn't care less if they called themselves the New York, New Jersey, East Rutherford, Florham Park, or whatever so long as they remain my Jets and remain in the NYC area.

So this announcement seals the deal. The new NJ stadium is being built. The Jets are logically moving their headquarters and training facility to NJ. The Jets do not "belong" in NYC or Queens and have been away from these locations longer than they were there. NYC had its chance as did Jet fans to support the Jets' desire to move to NYC last year and the city and NY Jet fans fumbled. NJ picked up the ball and ran it into the end zone. If you don't like it, too bad. Most Jet fans have rooted for this team from another county or state in the area and survived and so will you. Or you can root for St. John's and follow division III football. It's your life.

"Washington DC and Landover, MD are entirely different places too but it's OK for the Redskins. Believe it or not, Landover, MD is 2X as far away from Washington, DC as East Rutherford is from NYC."

Not Only that but the 'Skins have their practice facility in NoVA. They are located in two different states, with nothing in DC and no one seems to mind. At least the Jets will be in one location, NJ, while still being close to the city. Sounds good to me.

I agree They are only keeping the NY for the NY Revenue! I love the jets but They should be forced to change their name to the NJ Jets because they are no longer any part of NY.

Quick update on the Stadium as well.

Corzine, Teams Near Deal on Football Stadium, Star-Ledger Says
    2006-03-31 08:30 (New York)

    By Courtney Dentch
March 31 (Bloomberg) -- New Jersey Governor Jon Corzine is
near an agreement with the Giants and Jets football teams to
build a new stadium at the Meadowlands sports complex, a month
after the deal almost fell apart, the Newark Star-Ledger said,
citing unidentified government and team officials.
A deal could be announced as early as today that would
include a $1 billion open-air stadium and 600,000 square feet of
retail space on 75 acres, the Star-Ledger said. The teams will be
responsible for the construction, the newspaper said.
The deal modifies an agreement the teams reached with then-
acting Governor Richard Codey last year, reducing state
contributions while the teams have the right to sell naming
rights to corporations, the Star-Ledger said. If the price tops
$12 million, the state will receive a share, the newspaper said.
The deal nearly fell apart last month as Corzine was looking
for ways to pull in more money for the state, the Star-Ledger
said. He requested a roof for the stadium so it could host a
Super Bowl or NCAA basketball Final Four tournaments, the
newspaper said. The roof is not part of the revised deal, the
    Star-Ledger said.
