MSG last night had a pre-draft special. Boomer and Simms in Radio City Music Hall talking Jets / Giants and the draft in general.

Boomer thought Jets might be interested in Matt Ryan if he was there at 6. Simms shot that down by saying the Jets spending on Free Agents signals they are ready to compete now and that Chad will be the starter.....and he will be very effective as the starting QB with the additions around him...

Simms on Gholston. Simms mentioned that Gholston at the combine was every coach, GM and fans fantasy. A workout warrior that exuded athlete and a likeable kid.....but he commented that he (Simms) watches alot of college football and in particular saw more than a majority of OSU games, and never did Gholston appear on the screen as a standout player. To quote Simms " His paly never made me sit up straight and take notice."

That is a very telling statement....and I and other posters here at TGG have mentioned the same thing.

I want no part of a player that looks great with his shirt off and can squat 500 lbs, but is not a force on the field. I want - and every fan should want - a player that plays with heart and desire and has a true passion and love for the game and most importantly a player that "IMPOSES THAT WILL ONTO OTHERS" (Sorry to brting up Herm, but that is a GREAT line) ....especially if he is being picked in the first round let alone the Top 10.

That is also a very common statement that everyone who has scouted him in depth has been saying. None of the so called "experts" think he is worthy of a top 10 pick even though he will probably go in the top 10 anyway. Of course, he can always change his ways and stop taking games and plays off but that's the risk teams take with him.

People here like to talk about his 14 sacks but 7 of them came in two games. The other 7 came the his other 11 games combined. Sometimes he has the desire and sometimes he doesn't. Put 20 million dollars in his pocket guaranteed and which will it be?

I've heard some "experts" say that about Jenkins as well. Basically saying that throwing guaranteed $ at him was a mistake for a guy who has injuries and is known to be have a little attitude problem.

First off listening to Jenkins on the FSNY Jets show you could feel the passion he has for this game. ESPN is also on record for saying that he disrupted the locker room by calling out players and coaches tha the thought were giving up on the season.

DAMN!! That is exactly the types of players you want. Players that make others better and demand that everyone from the starting QB to the 3rd string TE to the Practice Squad player to the guy that makes your travel plans gives it there all ALL the time.

I'd love to see how Jenkins is going to deal with Brain Thomas - one guy who last year seemed to be MIA more often than not. The other guy being Victor Hobson, but he is gone....thankfully!!

    Jesus...H...Christ...

How is a guy with 22 sacks in 21 starts not a force on the field?

How is a guy who proclaimed that he wants to win DPOY not passionate?

How is a guy who set the single season sack record and Ohio f'in State just some guy who looks good with his shirt off? And how the fuck do you people conclude that he only looks good with his shirt off and THATS why he's a potential top 3 pick?

Amazing how a general statement by Simms is like some vindication for the anti-Gholston crowd...yet he still might not even make it to the 6th pick by the guys making the decisions and who are trying to get to know him inside and out.

Sims is dead-on, I've been preaching about Ghoston's inconsistent play for months. I couldn't have said it better....."His play doesn't make me sit up and take notice"(Thanks for the truth Phil). Don't people realize, if you're inconsistent in College Ball, it's going to be compounded in the NFL.

I wish I could give a favorable report on VG......I've seen his ENTIRE body of work at OSU and he's the most overrated player in Rd 1.

In my opinion, if Gholston didn't have the big game against Michigan he would probably be a late 1st round / early 2nd round pick.

The thing that makes him so appealing is the fact that he is exactly the type of player to play de/olb in the 3-4. I mean he is perfect and has soo much upside it ridiculous. In the right scheme with the proper coaching which i believe we have this guy is so explosive and strong he will be a force. teach him some better hand techniques and a few inside move and this guy the the next shawn merriman. an athletic beast who just has to be in the right state of mind and he will be a monster.

ive seen alot of OSU football and the guy is a very good player. just not what youd expect. hell be picked because 4-3 DE is a thin position and hes the top of the class this year. not saying i dont think hes good. but there are alot of times where he doesnt make plays when it matters. the guy can light the field up but overall theres alot of times when your expecting him to end a series and he becomes a nonfactor.

im not gonna go as far as to say he takes plays off like mos do, but consistent pressure can be an issue at times. and i dont want people to barrage me with his championship clip and be like "nuh uh see" cause thats one game.

but, i wouldnt complain one bit if he became a jet cause we need pass rushers. plus, i dont know if it was due to the position switch, but Bryan Thomas dissappeared and we dont have any other legit option for a OLB starter. thats what makes more sense to me about drafting him.
    [
and people who call him a workout warrior. he'll be able to get by some OT's based on his speed alone. what i would question is his technique and skillset as far as being able to penetrate once engaged. he was a bull rusher in college, time for him to learn some rip n swim action.

Here is how. Yes he had 22 sacks in 21 starts. Last year he had 14. 7 of those came in 2 games and the other 7 in 11 games combined.

He gets a sack one week against Jake Long and then does absolutely nothing agains Kent state. 2 tackles, are you kidding me?

The guy takes games off. He takes plays off. People worry about him.

The reason you hear all the negativit about him from so many of the "experts" is because it is all true.

Gholston is an enigma, looks like the the next Lawarence Taylor and then disappears from the face of the earth. Don you are exactly right, VG has been invisible against the the Kent States, Akron, Bowling Green. I want a high motor consistent player and would draft Chris Long in a heartbeat over Gholston.

I've had people on this board practically call me a liar.....I've seen Gholston's entire career, every snap, and about 25% of his games in person, and he's the third best defensive player on OSU's defense in 2007........Laurinaitis & Jenkins are better football players. Some people just don't get it, why would I have an agenda when it comes to VG. I just called like I see it and everything I've expressed about VG is spot on.

Gholston, the most overhyped, overrated player in the Draft.....end of the story!!

Yeah, and what worries all the GMs is this. If he is willing to take games off when he is playing for his first NFL contract what is he going to do after you stuff 20 million dollars of guaranteed money in his pocket?

Ding, Ding, Ding, we have a winner.

Listen, I'm not going to go nuts if we draft Gholston, but I won't be thrilled either. I hope someone in the Jet's draftroom feels the way I do about VG.

this is what i am afraid of with gholston. He seems like too much of a workout warrior and i don't see that much drive out of him. I would rather trade our two fourths to trade up and get either cris long or darren mcfadden than take gholston at #6. Call me crazy, but i think that the jets need a great pick here and should sacrifice other picks in order to get a stud.

Phil Simms is actually one of the better analysts out there. He makes a career out of talking football rather than talking trash like most of the analysts out there.

they are negotiating with Jake Long, as well as Gholston, Chris Long, possibly under the table with Matt Ryan, I heard they talked to Dorsey to see about his numbers... the Dolphins are negotiating with everybody in the top 5 trying to put together a decent deal, and possibly entice some team to move up for their guy....
