    Code:
WASHINGTON -- There's no playbook that could've prepared Kellen Clemens for this.

The New York Jets quarterback was moved to tears Thursday after Pope Benedict XVI blessed
and kissed his newborn daughterKate Elizabeth, following Benedict's two-hour,
    open-air Mass at Nationals Park.

Benedict was greeting some of the more than 45,000 in attendance when he came upon Clemens,
his wife, Nicole, and their nearly 4-week-old baby, who were sitting on the aisle in one of the
    rows of floor seating.

"My eyes welled up with tears, it was such a moving experience,"
    Clemens said.
"I don't really know if we fully understand just how special it was.
That's a direct descendant of Peter, and there he is giving a blessing and a kiss to our child."

Clemens and his family were in Washington as part of the group Catholic Athletes For Christ.

"To have the day unfold the way it did was just an awesome experience," Clemens said.

Clemens, who was shaky after winning the starting job midway through last season,
will again compete with Chad Pennington for the Jets' No. 1 quarterback spot this preseason. ESPN...

    LOL!!!

y is this funny? Seems like a religious guy who had the highest power on earth (in his eyes) kiss and bless his child. I mean how often do you meet the Pope , let alone have him bless your child. Im not religious but I could see why that would be a moving experience for someone that is.

It is funny cause instead of something good to say about one of the Jets qb's its something on clemens crying because the pope touched his child and starts talking about decendents of god , Its out there and he's out there.

Not weird at all, this is an amazing experience. I am a huge Chad supporter but after this, I really like Clemens as a person now.

this isnt funny at all...if i had a daughter and the POPE kissed it in front of everyone, i would be in shock too..that is the ultimate blessing

He probably feels, his daughter is the luckiest girl in the world.

Plus it could be a sign... ;) Clemens for glory

I was born and raised in the Catholic Church, never lost my faith, but found the hypocrisy of the church too much to deal with in my older years. Have not been to Mass in forever, may never go again, especially after the child sex scandals the church has gone thru. It not so much that, but the way the church protected these pedophiles and kept moving them around to harm an destroy more kids
Yet, the RCC has a history that is chock full corruption and such deeds go back century's. I expect the good lord will have a special place of misery for the likes of all who have used his name to invoke such terrible pain on the world. :eek:fftopic: sorry.....

Anyway, if that was Kellen's son who was blessed by the Pope, if I were the Jets I would have taken a flyer on him for future use.

I'm a Catholic who was hurt by the Church's handling of the Molestation cases. It's time for all to move on and forgive as Jesus would but certainly not forget the pain that many have experienced in recent years. As far as Kellen's daughter being blessed by the Holy Father this could be a good omen for Kellen and the Jets for the 2008 season and beyond.

A direct descendent of Peter? I hope the pope's dad is named Peter because it's an elected position. It'd be like Obama winning in November. Does Kellen think that he will be a direct descendent of Dubya?
Kellen's lucky he had a daughter. The pope might've done something less formal than blessing and kissing.
This just put me over the hump when it comes to deciding between worse and worser. Chad, please.

After hearing this, I kinda seem to like KC as a person too. It is always great to hear when these athletes give something back to the community. It is also great to hear when you see them cry out of simplicity. Humble and honest is what comes to mind. I think KC will be as great of a person as Chad is but this thread is no means of any QB comparison. I just now think Chad and KC are two great human beings in the JETS team. I use to and still do like Testaverde for what he did for the org. off the field. Im sure KC will put up more such examples helping out the needy ones too, be it in a Jets uniform on the field or in jeans on the road.

I know nothing about how the election for Pope works but my common sense and general knowledge lead me to think that there would be some sort of constraints for being a cadidate for the Pope. One of them 'could' be being of the same descendent. The article was posted on ESPN so there must be some credibility. Having said that, while Im not a Catholic Jew or Christian, I dont think we should make such remarks about such a religious personality.

This is cool. I didn't realize how religious KC is. In fact, I didn't know they had Catholics in Oregon.

    Ugh.

Ugh. Just goes to show that even an intelligent person will believe bullshit if it's presented to them in the right way. If the Pope is a direct descendent of Peter, I'm a direct descendent of Jesus.

But whatever, believe what you like. I won't hold it against you so long as you don't hold my non-belief against me.

Scots, I won't hold anything against you -- as long as you believe that Braveheart is the best movie ever! Not for a History lesson mind you, but just for pure cinematic excellence!

I'm catholic, bought up as a catholic and rebelled like a catholic, I'm now just what I would call 'spiritual'.
In the 80s I went to see John-Paul II in London, and believe me, it was very very moving. Not sure Pope Benedict has the same aura yet as JP did, but I can understand KCs feelings. Just hope he kissed the Popes ass and asked for some favours....please.

    I'm an atheist.
    You're an asshole.
So is the guy who started this thread, typed "lol," and then said "I never said this was funny." LOL mean laugh out loud, FYI.

Trust me guys: a religious athlete is a grounded athlete. I like Kellen a lot. If he feels he has a papal sanction to succeed in life, more power to him.

And in Catholic dogma, all popes are "direct descendants of Peter." That's why they have to change their name when they reach the post.
