He is not my 1st choice for the #6 overall. I would like to go defense with Gholston or Long, yet this seasons moves have made me believe that he is the guy. Oakland does hold the key to our draft however. Here is my evidence: Our O-Line acquisitions- Faneca and Woody are here to anchor a running game. We have a leader of the O-Line and his 2nd hand guy (mangold) to run the line. The fat bastards that are Woody and Moore will push the holes open. Tony Richardson has convinced me that DMC might be a Jet- he worked with AD last year and he is notorious for making good RBs great. DMC is no Peterson, yet with Richardson's tutelage and lead blocking, DMC will get better because of him. Richardson is the biggest piece of evidence that DMC might come to us. Bill Callahan- the Offensive Line and coordinating brain that he is will add a new dimension to the offense as well as shorten the time for the new Line to gel. His input will be well respected in coaches meetings and may work with Schotty to improve the running game and play-calling. DMC can flourish behind a Callahan running game and coached O Line. Now his fumbling needs to be fixed. I trust RB coach Jimmy Raye will do that. And his football smarts better be 100000 times better than is actual smarts. Without drafting another WR early, DMC gives the Jets room to move up and down on draft day to get one more defensive player with the 2nd round pick and perhaps move up into the 3rd with the 2 4ths and get that last guy, then find the project players with the 6 and 7s. I think we have done everything in Free Agency to build a Vikings like O-Line to make DMC as good as AD as possible. We also have a FB that was from the Vikings O-Line. It just makes sense at this point... or i'm so tired that i'm delirious and this is all BS. Its just beginning to make sense to me, even though my personal preference is to get Gholston or Long.
Going down that line of thought you can argue that Callahan also is another reason.. I don't know. I just feel like with this years draft and what we've done in the offseason up until this point we really can't lose. It's like no matter who falls to us he should end up being a great player. Personally I'd like to see us get Chris Long, Gholston or McFadden but there is a high probability we will end up with one of the three.
If I had to guess, I would think their order of preference is Chris Long, McFadden, Jake Long, then a huge sigh before Gholston and Ryan. I still think they do what is necessary on draft day to get one of the three.
I know a lot of signs point to drafting DMC, but while he is the BPA, and while we still need help on both sides of the ball I really think Gholston would be the safe pick at that point if both Longs are off the board. That being said I am preparing myself for something totally unexpected come draft time.
It is true that the NYJs are certainly spending (and planning to spend) a lot of pre-draft time with McFadden. I still prefer that they select Gholston or McKelvin if they can't get Long. But they very well may pick Gosder Cherlius as a stud right offensive tackle...!!!
RAIDERS GA-GA FOR GHOLSTON? Posted by Mike Florio on April 9, 2008, 9:20 p.m. At a time when many league observers believe that the Oakland Raiders won?t be able to resist the 4.33 speed of running back Darren McFadden with the fourth overall pick in the draft, a league source tells us that there are ?strong indications? that the Raiders will select Ohio State linebacker/defensive end Vernon Gholston. Gholston?s stock has improved dramatically as a result of pre-draft workouts. If drafted by the Raiders, he would likely supplant Jay Richardson at right defensive end. And if the Raiders pass on McFadden, look for the Cowboys to try to make a move north, possibly by trading their two first-round picks (No. 22 and No. 28 overall) to the Jets at No. 6 or the Patriots at No. 7.
There is no Miami - Jake Long news. Just that they are talking to his agent, along with Gholston's agent and I am sure they will be talking to Chris Long's agent too.
Mcfadden is the of pick that would ignite a franchise, something the jets have not done in awhile with the draft
It's just too bad that running back is nowhere near the first need of the present franchise. Before RB you go DE/OLB, OT, CB, WR, QB and even SS.
It surely helps to address needs when the right personnel are available. Sorry, I'm not buying that we can't have a very good running game with the guys we currently have on the squad. Our OL has been dramatically upgraded, Leon is quick and evasive, Jones is a thumper with low mileage- two guys to back them up have already been signed, plus a vet FB with exceptional run-blocking skills. McFadden is a luxary pick we don't need right now.
since the rb position is stable and the de position isint, wouldnt it make more sense to draft gholston? do we want 4 good rb's and no true pass rushing de? or 3 good rb's and a great de? also, i think if the pick is gholston, we then can go wr or cb in the 2nd rd, if we go mcfadden 1st, then we would have to go de in the 2nd, will there be any good wr's and cb's left in the 3rd rd on? i dont wanna chance it and put ourselves further behind the 8ball, dont get me wrong, i do love mcfadden
I'm not buying the McFadden is a luxury pick argument. One of our biggest needs left is offensive firepower, to be able to fill that need with the best player in the draft is lucky, not a luxury.
do u remember watching our defense last season and the opposing qb having time to shit and read a newspaper?
But do you remember how many times The Jets stalled a drive on the opposition's 40 yard line, right out of FG range? Do you remember all the 3 and outs? Our offense could not move the football to save their lives. I'm just trying to point out that both the offense and defense sucked, and both sides need improvement. McFadden, as well as C. Long and Gholston, would all provide improvement.
Don't you think that it had just a little bit to do with the fact that our OL was 2nd worst in the league? You could have had Lorenzo Neal blocking for Emmit Smith back there and the results would have been the same. We couldn't block to save our lives- pressure was coming from all sides.
If they took McFadden, I would be beyond pissed. The jets DO NOT need a running back by an stretch of imagination. We've got our playmaker in Leon Washington, who just needs to be given the ball more, and we've got our franchise back in Thomas Jones. Have these 2 split the carries behind this new o-line and all of a sudden we have a great running game. What we need is a pass rusher like Gholston. If somehow he is not available, you take Leodis McKelvin or trade out.
