Very rarely can a player get by with pure power and athleticism in the NFL. If Gholston is going to be worth a top-10 pick, he is going to have to work on his technique, BIG TIME.... He's not going to be able to just bully OL in the NFL
1. Don't get how that can't be coached up. and 2. He can overpower AND blow by O-linemen, kind of why people are so intrigued. He's better against the run that he's been given credit for lately too. 3. You don't get 22 sacks in 21 starts and not have some technique.
And McFadden is not going to have to adjust to much faster, stronger defensive players and much smaller holes with less time to react? Past drafts are strewn with bust RBs. I'd rather take my chances on a pass rusher. It's a more important facet of the game. Pass rushers are a premium and lead to championships. Running backs are a dime a dozen in the NFL.
Personally, I think Gholston's still a bit raw for the league. Like you say though DWare, these things can easily be coached, especially with someone like Gholston who never seems to be satisfied with himself (see his interviews during the combine). He's already got some great production and an awesome athletic base to build off of, he just needs some refining. And yes, he actually had a substantial bowl game with some good QB pressures, although his secondary let him down a few times by leaving recievers wide open. I still really like him with the #6, but I wouldn't trade up for him as I don't think he deserves to go any earlier. DWare's title's sarcastic and from what I've read he's more a Mendenhall fan than a McFadden fan.
Looks like he did pretty good too me , Forced a lot of pressure. If he's our guy next month... Im fine with that.
After I watched that game there were many people saying that he disappeared in it, and others were agreeing. I watched that whole thing with another Jet fan and we watched for Gholston only and we were convinced if he did that in the NFL it would turn into hurried throws and maybe INTs from the secondary. His motor isnt relentless, but i didn't see him stand and watch during that game either. Running plays were barely directed at him, when they aren't he does jog after it, because he is 20 yrds away from the play. Do we expect him to sprint and chase the ball carrier down alone? He never takes a passing play off. His technique can be coached up, with hand placement and other moves. We do have Bryan Cox and Jim Hermann to do so. Those coaches are more than capable to making him a QB horror at the next level. An "across the face" move needs to be mastered, then tackles will have no chance against him. Worth the #6 if you ask me.
Those highlights did not do too much for me. He did not have a great BCS game. I still think he is a great talent though.
As big of a Gholston fan as the next guy but its tough to judge a game based on a few selective highlights.........Because those highlights will only show the good he did in the game(s), not the bad.
Is that clearer?
if gholsten is still there at #6, that means that everyone else is gone (long, long, ryan, mcfad, etc). so.....if gholsten is there at #6, what are our choices? is there a team willing to trade up a few spots to get him, and give us their 2nd or 3rd? would trading out of 6th but still getting mckevin (sp) and a new 2nd/3rd be good?
youre exactly right DWare...you dont always judge if a player had a good game or not by his stats. Now thats how you distinguish the real football fan from the wannabe
Did I miss something? He looked O.K. but not great. The first play was a stunt where he was blocked by a reciever. The other plays they completed a pass and ran to the line of scrimmage. Not exactly a highlight reel. I only saw one play where he was doubled. I would take him over McFadden, but he does seem to vapor lock. I'm not going to, but I could show you 5 plays from that game that he doesn't even look like a first rounder.
what exactly is this video supposed to be showing? I saw some decent pressure on Flynn, or was that not Gholston? If thats the case then this entire thread is pointless...
One of the popular arguments against drafting Gholston was that he "disappeared in the biggest game of his life". The people who claimed this didn't actually watch the game, they just said that because they saw that he didn't have any sacks in the game.
Backs like Thomas Jones are a dime a dozen. Great backs are few and far between. Only time will tell which McFadden is. For that matter great pass rushers are few and far between as well. Do you think Gholston will be an elite pass rusher in the NFL? Only time will tell.
