March 28, 2008 Refreshing our mock draft Here?s the latest Jets Stream mock draft, which, like Laveranues Coles? modified contract, is a guarantee. (Ha!): 1. Dolphins: DE Chris Long. He?s the safest pick and Bill Parcells craves safe. 2. Rams: DT Glenn Dorsey. He answered a lot of questions on his Pro Day. My peeps tell me he?s the best player in the draft. 3. Falcons: QB Matt Ryan. Why? Two words: Joey Harrington. 4. Raiders: RB Darren McFadden. Al Davis is spending ridiculous amounts of money on defense, so you figure he?ll go for the best (see: fastest) offensive player. 5. Chiefs: OT Jake Long. Herm needs to rebuild the O-line. 6. Jets: DE/OLB Vernon Gholston. I know everybody is ga-ga over Gholston, who lit up the combine and his recent Pro Day, but I?m not so sure about him. This is what an NFC scout told me about Gholston: ?A lot of people think he might be more of a workout wonder than a real football player. He had one hell of a workout at the combine, but he didn?t have a lot of productive games at Ohio State.? Just think: We get to debate this for the next four weeks. I like Cimini, he gives us more info than all the beat writers combined and I think he kniws his stuff. He should know, however, that this is the time when all the ptospects get beat up. We've heard that Ryan throws to many intercepts, Dorsey is always hurt, J. Long is a RT, C. Long has no position and Gholston despite 14 sacks is a workout warrior. If we get Gholston, I'll be very happy.
after seeing what was said about gholston, i'm convinced we're gonna take him. you know we always have to get a guy that is hot all along, then when he's gonna fall to us, becomes a giant ?
You will have no shot at Gholston, He'll be either the 1st or 2nd Pick, Mark it down, eithe r way even if the world came undone, he will NEVER get past Oakland at 4. Given McFadden and Gholston (which again won't happen because he'll be gone either 1 or 2) the Raiders will take Gholston, to me its becoming more and more apparent, we'll have a top 5 of Long Gholston Long Dorsey and McFadden in some order. I can see several things playing out but i don't see a scenario that includes Matt Ryan in the top 5 (although i GUESS KC is a possibility but I'm not buying it at all) My guess is Ryan slips into the middle of the first round if the Jets don't take him, Baltimore Detroit Carolina Chicago should all be looking at him but in the end i have a feeling people want to spend those top picks on a immediately beneficial player to their squad. I can see Ryan making it down to the 15 range before someone pulls the trigger. If the top 5 play out the way i'm calling it the Jets will be forced to take Leodis McKelvin at 6 which is ironic since Cramartie will then go to NE right behind him creating a constant comparison between the two for years to come.
Gholston is definitely not a 1 or 2 pick class prospect. He had zero forced fumbles at Ohio State in a defensive scheme in which defensive ends tend to knock the ball loose now and then. If he weighed 270 you'd be looking at a great 4-3 Defensive End prospect. He may well be convertible to OLB in the 3-4 but the odds are that he's not going to be a great one.
Sometimes I read what scouts say and wonder WTF is going on...I mean how does a guy with 22 sacks in 21 stars not have alot of productive games?
He was projected by a lot of people to go to us at #6 way before the combine, so I don't get why people call him a workout warrior or indirectly infer that with statements like the one you quoted. If he could average a sack a game in the NFL, I'll take him every day of the week and twice on Sunday.
Even Madden wouln't make that trade:lol: Its funny, both of our projected popular picks, Gholston and DMC.... I don't really like. Gholston is too one dimensional (at the moment) and will get figured out very quickly in the hurly burly of the NFL. McFadden, is either very dumb or uncoachable. Me thinks hes the real deal and believes his own hype. However if we did draft either of those 2, I wouldn't lose any sleep as I do believe in the CS. My ideal scenario is to trade down with the likes of Dallas and pick say, Gosder Cherilus/Branden Albert and James Hardy.
yo its not madden, they need a runningback and if mcfadden is on the board they will make that trade, maybe they'll throw in another 4th or drob
The guy was invisible in about half the games he played last year. 7 of his 14 sacks came in 2 games. He totally reminds me of Abraham how he either takes over a game or you dont know he is even playing.
Just one thing on McFadden gus; he gets this rep somehow about having bad character and being a me-first player, but every single report I've read states that his teammates and coaches love him and that he's a leader on and off the field. Sure, he's obviously made some retarded decisions, but I don't think he's a bad person for it. Also, the vast majority of his fumbles are out in the open field and due to his open field ball distribution. He rarely ever fumbles up the gut. It's obviously a minor technique problem that should be fixed with some specific coaching towards that. For a really accurate profile of his, check out analysis under http://www.nfl.com/combine/profiles/darren-mcfadden?id=284 . I think there are way too many misconceptions about the guy. I'm not sure if he's the #1 talent in the draft, but he's more than worth the #6 pick. I will say that I'm cooling a bit more on Gholston recently though. He's very talented, but is still really raw and I don't think he'll have a huge impact for at least a few years while he learns technique.
And you wouldn't take a pass rusher like Abe in the top 10 of a draft? Seriously? And you can say that bolded statement about almost any pass rusher in the league. DeMarcus Ware could have been only been a pass rusher too if Parcells didn't decide he wanted to make him a complete linebacker.
I just think that McFadden has started to believe in the hype that surrounds him, maybe justifiably so. But his errors HAVE to have been pointed out to him on more than one occasion. Carrying the ball in the wrong arm, wrapping up on impact...I'm picking a little bit. He is a very good back who if available should be worth more as a bargaining chip for us.
