no crying here, i think revis will be the better corner within the next season or two anyways. just need a competent 2nd tier cb to pair with him. still wondering why we let dyson and poteat walk though, we're very thin at cb.
Why say it so definitively when your proof is a mention in a sentence? Especially when logically Tanny SHOULD have to call the owner considering he'll be using Woody's money to sign a guy.
Glad we did not get him, too much money and we didn't need a #1 corner, we already have that, draft a #2 and we will be fine, the money we did spend was all on needs, so end result so far is better than getting him
You can't say I'd rather have Samuel than Pace - their contracts are way different. We couldn't afford Samuel and all the other guys we signed minus Pace. If you want to say I'd rather sign Samuel than Pace and Faneca OR Pace and Jenkins then it would make more sense.
So according to that story, we offered 36 over six and he ended up getting 54 over 6. Did we really drive up the price that much? That's almost a $20 million difference. What gives?
thats not a very unusual sequence. the GM, coach, or another staff member gets the agent on the phone and discusses contract while the coach or coaches get the player on the horn and stroke em. i am not sure why tanny had to get "approval" from woody....they should have been well aware of the price. jil
I can't give the sources name, but he was DIRECTLY involved in the entire process. His point on the 1 pm phone call was that the Jets were caught by surprise on how quickly the Eagles moved. The Jets also thought the agent would drive it up by involving them, but Asante basically took the deal the Eagles put down without any negotiation. The Jets offered 1 million more guaranteed, but the Eagles show of enthusiasm won out. The guaranteed money was the primary conversation, as it is so rare that a player plays through an entire 6 year contract without some re-work at some point. After the first few years (where the guarantees are primarily earned), the length is there for the bonus to be prorated over.
There isn't a GM in the league who is commiting $24mil guaranteed without getting an owners approval. Even if the phone call was "Woody, Asante already has an offer from the Eagles, we have to go to the high end of the range we discussed upfront".
Well said. I don't see a CB in this draft that warrants a top 10 pick. Hopefully NE will have to take one with #7 due to their recent CB position losses...
Seems many of you folks continue to dismiss Justin Miller as a viable option to play the opposite side of Revis. The money the Eagles paid for Samuel's seems kind of crazy to me, but really it's only 24 million guaranteed. I guess like the Jets, if you need and like a player you pay for his services. Yet, if signing Samuel would have meant not signing Faneca or Woody or Pace or any combination there of for that matter, then it was a very good non-signing. While many feel that Samuel's is a #1 corner others are of the opinion that he is a product of the "system" and a very good player who will help the Eagles. He MAY not be the player everyone thinks he is, out of the system. We will all see just where is true talent level is very soon, my money is on a very good player, but not a top shut down corner. Personally, I wish him the best and glad he is out of our division and conference. Yet, I have to believe that if the Jets though he was all of that and a urgent need, they would have been on the phone with him right after they talk to Faneca. Personally I was very happy and excited last year at this coaching staff assessment of JMiller and looked forward to seeing him in action before the injury. If you remember last year Mangini was of the belief that Miller had finally turned the corner and was just beginning to reach his potential. So again I have to ask, do we not give this kid a chance before we go and spend ton of money on an area we may have already covered, no pun intended.
i have a question for all of u that wanted samuel [which included myself ] and that is for those of u who think the patriots have been a bunch of cheating son's of bitche's [which also includes me] then how good is samuel? i asked myself the same thing about mangini, since he came from those cheaters, and my answer was, we'll he made the playoffs w/us his 1st year [w/out cheating] so i guess he's good
It shows poor jugment, IMHO. To sink that much cap into CB (don't forget Revis) and you do not even have a pass rush....glad they did not.
