I know this had a thread, but the thread title is not accurate. ESPN is reporting that Coles onlly agreed to the guarantee of the last 2 years, not an extension http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3317177
Sweet...so he wasn't extended. Good move by Tangini...Coles only has about 2 more seasons of good football.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't they do this already? Gave him the last two years of his contract up front (11mill). *EDIT*Nevermind, he turned it down @ first, but changed his mind.
I guess they offered but maybe a deal wasn't struck? Not sure. Reason I believe the ESPN article is I would think that if it was an extension, the official website would probably post that. If its just guaranteeing the last 2 years, that doesn't change his contract in anyway, so they wouldn't post it. At least thats the way I see it.
Not surprised by this move from Tannebaum, keep Coles happy whilst he only has a couple good years left. Our front office have their heads screwed on, a good FO is the foundation for greater things. I'm sure we're going to pull off a surprise in the draft.
They were guaranteeing the final two years already as an incentive to get him in. It IS an extension. The guaranatee of the final 2 years was already on the table before today: http://www.nypost.com/seven/03282008/sports/jets/coles_agrees_to_extension_103942.htm
This is good negotiating by Tanny. He doesn't give Coles extra years, which would be unproductive due to age and injury (my speculation), yet we will keep him for the years which he will be productive, and he is happy because he will make 11Million for playing hopefully 32 games- most guys dont make that.
I agree. I was unhappy when I first heard it was an extension, this is much better. Its funny because last year I wasa screaming about the Kendall situation. Not to pay Kendall necessarily, but to make a decision on it and get it over with (rookie dorm incident) and said it would come back to get us. It not only seemed to get us on the field, but I thought that whole fiasco was going to get us in the Coles situation here too. If that whole PR disaster didn;t happen, I wonder if the FO is as worried about Coles b*tching if it didn't happen that way with Kendall. I think not. I think for the sake of not letting this be another ugly incident, they had to take care of this quickly. I am glad that a compomise was reached and they didn't have to extend. Good job FO.
well, with this ESPN article, I'm not so sure. Maybe it was never formally presented to Coles with him, agent, and Tannenbaum and maybe after siting down and doing so formally, Coles accepted. There are 2 stories out there, and like I said earlier, I believe if it was a extension for one of the team captains, the website would have posted it already
This is on PFT about this issue: Although all reports indicate that wide receiver Laveranues Coles is no longer unhappy to be a Jet, there are now conflicting reports about what kind of deal the player and the team have reached to make Coles happy. Mark Cannizzaro of the New York Post reported early this morning that Coles agreed to an extension and had either two or three years added to his contract. Wrote Cannizzaro of the extension, “Initially the Jets offered to guarantee the remaining $11 million of his deal, but Coles said he was more concerned [with] the long-term security.” But in a story posted at ESPN.com several hours after Cannizzaro’s story, Pat Yasinskas wrote that guaranteeing the $11 million is exactly what the Jets and Coles agreed to do, adding, “Coles had been seeking a contract extension, but guaranteeing the remaining two years is an apparent compromise between the team and the receiver.” Either Cannizzaro or Yasinskas has the story wrong. At first glance the difference between the two stories might seem insignificant because either way, the Jets and Coles will both say they’re happy with the deal and ready to move forward. But in reality, the difference could be huge: If Yasinskas’s story is correct, the Jets made a major concession by guaranteeing Coles’ salary without getting any additional years on the deal. Cannizzaro’s story leaves room for the possibility that Coles was the one who made the concession, pledging two or three more years to the Jets while getting no additional guaranteed money. http://www.profootballtalk.com/2008/03/28/coles-deal-a-guarantee-not-an-extension/
Huh? The Jets were the ones who put up the agreement to guarantee the 2 years, not Coles. Anyway, I'm happy either way. It seems more now like Coles just wanted the security of knowing that he could retire a Jet, and that's okay by me. No need to make a big stink about it but whatever. I'm just glad he's in camp and happy.
PFT spins it as a bad thing that it was a guarantee without and extension. Whereas most fans think it is a good thing. I think PFT's point is that the Jets gave out $11mm in guarantees and got nothing in return. I would suggest that making a team leader content is a big return on an investment of really $6mm. The $5mm this season was a foregone conclusion he was getting paid that unless he got injured in TC/Pre-season. So the Jets, guaranteed $6mm next year, which, I can live with if he is happy with the organization again (at least for this season).
I don't know if it's legal for me to post in a Coles' related board, but for what it's worth: WE SHOULD'VE PULLED A PETE KENDALL AND TRADED COLES (back) TO THE REDSKINS FOR A LATE ROUND DRAFT CHOICE...AND THEN TRADED OUR SIXTH OVERALL PICK TO THE BENGALS FOR CHAD JOHNSON!!! It all balances out. We'd get another small wideout that likes to bitch about everything...and we'd potentially be giving up our shot at drafting an incredible talent like Darren McFadden or Vernon Gholston. With the late rounder we'd get for Coles, we can draft another Jacob Bender type, because we all know that late round, small school offensive linemen known as "projects" are the types of players you can build a team with.
Actually, it's not. The agreement between the two sides was to guarantee the final 2 years. No extension took place.
Honest to god, I think we are going to go upwards and get either Chris Long or DMC. Sorry, this is off topic but just a hunch.
love this move, win win situation for both, keeps coles happy and his mouth shut and we don't pony up ant extra cash
