Laveranues Coles, Dewayne Robertson are Jet no-shows at Hofstra BY RICH CIMINI DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER Tuesday, March 18th 2008, 4:00 AM Weissman for News Laveranues Coles Wide receiver Laveranues Coles and nose tackle Dewayne Robertson were no-shows Monday for the start of the Jets' offseason conditioning program at Hofstra, a team spokesman confirmed. In Robertson's case, it's yet another sign his days with the team are numbered. The Jets have been trying to trade Robertson for nearly a month, and they are currently in discussions with the Broncos. Just yesterday, Denver acquired an extra sixth-round draft pick by trading offensive lineman Chris Myers to the Texans, and they could use that pick in a Robertson trade. The Broncos are attempting to restructure Robertson's contract, which has two years and $18 million remaining. Robertson's agent, Hadley Engelhard, didn't return calls. GM Mike Tannenbaum said recently that he expected Robertson to participate in the program, claiming the Jets still have a role for him even though they traded for nose tackle Kris Jenkins, but that was widely viewed as posturing. Coles' absence stems from his contract. He wants the Jets to tear up his final two years and give him a long-term extension. Coles, 30, has $11 million remaining on his deal. The Jets offered to guarantee the money, but Coles believes he is worth more to the team. Coles is a team captain, one of the most respected players in the locker room. Eric Mangini, trying to prevent unrest, badly wants Coles to show up. Coles couldn't be reached for comment. Offseason programs are voluntary, so players can't be penalized for not participating. In other developments, the Jets confirmed the signing of former Packers tight end Bubba Franks. They also brought in Patriots wide receiver/punt returner Troy Brown on a free-agent visit. Brown, 36, one of the most beloved players in New England history, was informed recently that he's no longer in the Patriots' plans. Coming off knee surgery, Brown, the Patriots' all-time leading receiver, played in only one game last season and did not record a reception. He may opt for retirement.
i love coles but 11 million over the next 2 years seems very fair for the player he is i dont think he is going to get a 5 year deal at his age i hope he stays though he is a tough man
Unfortunately I'm not surprised about this. LC is obvious, and Robertson is giving the jets the big fuck you...
We should give Coles a 5-year contract for $50 million. Then, two years from now, he can tell us that contract is not enough and he wants another, even longer term contract. Then, if we don't give it to him, he can once again go to the media and tell them we're "liars" and he's been "strung along."
i'm tired of coles pissing and moaning. he's a whiney little bitch. he's got 2yrs remaining on his contract. i don't care how good he is, he's never been a game changer. i think we've been more then fair, especially that he's had injury issues, in guaranteeing the last 2yrs of his contract. kill me if you want, but fu@k coles, i don't want him.
LC will be in camp in the summer to earn his 6 million for the year and he's gonnna like it or at least pretend like he does for the next two years. Hopefully D-slob falls into a hole never to be seen again...who cares?
I don't think this will happen. This is his last contract and he knows it. He is doing what every NFL player should do, and that is protect himself. He could be a little less conspicuous about how he does it, but you can't blame these guys for trying to get their payday. I don't understand why everyone is so mad at Coles, when the guy is just protecting himself. Where is the rage at Woody Johnson, who is one winning season away from slamming us with $5000 per seat PSLs, and turning the new stadium into a Corporate Arena? Woody Johnson probably sees as much money in one week as Coles will see over the life of his new contract, and Woody never once has to put his body on the line for a duck that is going to get him annhilated the second he catches it? Perspective.
I'm not surprised about Drob, the team has tried to end their relationship with him constantly for a month I think if anything that could have created a problem if he showed up. Coles is being a bonafied ass hole, we offer 11 million in guarantees over the next two years and he says no? How much money for how long does he actually want he's beat up and not too young anymore
Coles is probably hammering out a deal...and no need for Robertson to show up, he'll be gone, no need for a freak injury or anything.
I can't say that I blame Robertson for being a no-show. He's known for months that we want him out, and now that we're somewhat close with Denver I'm sure that he doesn't want to risk any freak injury, someone drops a weight on his foot, trips going through a doorway, etc...
I hope you know I was being facetious when I said we should give him a 5-year-$50 million contract.(LOL) As far as future concussions for Coles, you're right about that. I'd feel a whole lot better about Coles' longevity if Clemens is under center for us this year. The kid has zip on the ball that Penny will never have, and that should help him in the "hang-you-out-to-dry" concussion-syndrome department.
I hope the sentiment and Jets-fan public opinion we've seen on this board in recent days concerning DRob isn't mirrored in the FO right now. The pendulum has swung so far toward getting rid of DRob, it's like a lot of guys just want him out the door for practically nothing in return. The guy did do everything we asked of him, moved over to NT despite being a daunting task for someone his size and experience and he actually held his own fairly well at that position, especially toward the end of the season. This is clearly not a position he belongs in. Then we reward him by publicly shopping his ass to the whole world. So yeah... I'd say he's probably pretty bitter and turned off about showing up at Hofstra. I know it's best if he's gone now, for everybody's sake, but I'd still like to get SOME value for him. I could wring Bradway's neck for giving up two #1's for a guy with a bone-on-bone condition we either knew about or should have known about.
