That pass rush was generated from the front four 80% of the time. Gholston is not a down linemen. If you draft a potential OLB at the #6 pick in this draft, you better make sure he isn't just a situation player.. That leaves us kinda predictable, sense he wont cover anything proper in the NFL. Which will easily be defended by any team we face.. So yes, you should be drafting any OLB that can cover. You dont need to be amazing at it but atleast show some potential with it. Gholston is not good at it in the least, not even a little. He is lost in zone and completely ineffective. Not worth it...
Can someone tell me what is the difference between Gholston and Groves from Auburn? Is the difference considerable or are the comparable players? If we were to trade down and draft Groves later in the 1st as opposed to taking Gholston at No. 6 how much would we be losing?
I have read that some people are comparing Long to LT and saying that he is the best pass rusher to come out of college since. So, it's not that far off base.
Who compared Long to LT? Especially as a pass rusher? Long isn't even the best pass rusher in this class, let alone the best one to come out of college since Lawrence friggin Taylor. Long's strength is that he's a good all around player, not that he's a dominant pass rusher.
He had 14 1/2 sacks last year and 19 tackles for loss of yardage? Are you kidding? And I'm looking for the article where I read that. (Well, I can't find the article. It was SportsIllustrated.com and I'm sure it's in this week's mag as it was a long one)
sorry I was not available on your schedule, I am at work here, so, you attack me by quoting my post and saying it does not make sense, BUT! you edit the post to exclude words that were critical to the post!.. DOES THAT MAKE SENSE?? re-read my post, compare it to what you quoted, and get back to me. I will admit that I did make a typo with the word monster... I wrote monstre!! Anyway!! I can break it down for you, He blew away the competition at the combines with his amazing strength and speed. He was almost below average in the LB drills for fluidity and lateral movement.
Man, Gholston looked jacked on Path to the Draft. I know he has great straight line speed and can apparently jump out of the gym, but that guy is so muscle bound he almost looks uncomfortable. I feel like he's wound so tight he's going to have a lot of muscle pulls and problems with his body. Also, he just doesn't look like the kind of athlete to me who can make a lot of changes in direction to follow a play or cover a receiver. If he beats a guy with his speed, or is able to disengage with his strength, he's going to be fine, but I just don't see a guy who can cover a lot of the field with the way his body is put together.
Horrible post. The quickest and most agile of CBs can't cover Welker, do you really think they would ask a bigger slower player to do so??? The only thing Gholston will be asked to do is play man to man with less athletic tight ends as well as drop into a zone to cover a SMALL area of the field. Do you think they ask Merrimen to cover those quick slot receivers??? He has poor coverage skills but still makes it to the probowl with his pass rush skills alone.
Context...doing it in the weak ass ACC without even playing the best team in the conference last year... But I guess that shouldn't factor into the Next LT.
Who projected it? An NFL scout? A former 3-4 coach? Or some draftnik that played high school football and started his own website?
1. I edited your post? I quoted the whole post. 2. WTF does you being at work and my schedule have to do with any of this? 3. No, I didn't attack you, I attacked your post. 4. The post I attacked sucked because there was nothing in there correct. - Below average pass rusher? 22.5 sacks in 21 starts and the only guy to get a sack against Jake Long says thats bullshit. - Most guys stay blocked when they're blocked. Pass rushers fail far more often than they succeed. - If he's ineffective as a pass rusher, why would teams double team him?
The nothing was about an original post I made that I felt didn't even fit the conversation (something about how LT changed the whole left side of the O-line, especially left tackles). But OK.... True...it's not like coaching has ever played a part in a rookies development. Plus, being a pure pass rusher sure has hurt the career success of guys like Jason Taylor and Dwight Freeney, right? But if a) when he's blocked he stays blocked and b) he's an ineffective pass rusher to start with, why would he be double teamed?
uh..everybody is projecting it..don't you even bother to read? You don't play DE at the pro level when you only weigh 260 pounds. Not and be successful anyway.
...I really can't keep this up, I gather from your post that I mistook your nothing for something.. The ineffective pass rusher was not the context that I was thinking of.. It is obvious that you like this player.... A WHOLE LOT!!... and you are entitled to that. I don't dislike this player AT ALL!! I would just rather draft one at number six that can contribute on every down...... right now! if one is available that is.. so I concede to you, as I am sure we both want the same thing... the means to spend $4,000 on ASS!! in one night.. and the Jets to win a super bowl
Ah yes, everybody. That must be why half of the so-called expert are mocking us to pick him. Because he's such a bad fit.
Actually there are many pro bowl defensive ends who play at a pro bowl level at 260 pounds. Michael Strahan weighs 255, Osi Umenyiora weighs 261, Dwight Freeney weighs 268, Jason Taylor 255. Vernon Gholston weighed in at 266 at the combine and although he is projected to have to ability to stand up in the 3-4, there is no reason to believe he wouldn't be successful with his hand down in the 4-3.
