I have to admit, I LOVE the fact that we're making all of these moves. Last season it seemed as if the FO thought we had enough to compete when, of course we weren't even close. My only concern is weather or not there is going to be any chemistry at all on either side of the ball. The Redskins have been spending FA money like crazy for the last 6-8 years and have NOTHING to show for it. I do realize that we sucked last season, so we had to try something. With this many changes/new faces, how many of you think this is going to work out in time to make the playoffs.
I thinkit's a little different b/c the Redksins consistently overpaid in FA, this is a big change for us and I don't expect it to continue. This particular year need players were available and we scooped them up. If we keep doing this the next 2-3 years then I'll worry but that's not happening.
Totally different scenarios. The fore-skins spent on names alone, not necessarily 'where' they needed it. AND, here's the big difference, they had a buffoon coach (Spurrior) and Marty was there as well.
last season pointed out several 'glaring needs' that we targeted with FA's. we didn't just sign "pricey vets" for name sake. in every case, we made the team better in places that definetely needed the most help/improvement. plus, we didn't 'overpay' for any of them. a dollar less and they all would have ended up on any number of teams lined up behind us, including parcelle's fish. we had a ton of cap, and we used it (finally) to make the team better. if our cap room can absorb the fa contracts, and we can sign rhodes and #6, then perfect. if we DIDN'T address these glaring needs and we went into '08 $30M under the cap, (like we did in '07), the jets would be the richest 1-15 team in the nfl.
We Complain When Thw Jets Dont Spend And We Get Nervous When We Do Spend Oh Its Fun To Be A Jets Fan The Redskins Way Overpaid For There Marginal Players Jenkins And Fanica Are Probowlers The Linebacker On The Other Hand Could Be A Reach But He Has Huge Upside And Our Gm Is A Very Good Cap Guy
Here's the big difference between what we have done and what Washington usually does. And maybe you can compare what we did when FA first started in the early 90's to what Washington does regularly. But anyway, I feel that we have spent our money very wisely. On the OL, DL and a pass rusher. Washington typically will spend their money on the "glamour" positions. Makes for nice headlines, but they still had no "beef" where it mattered. I mean seriously - Antwaan Randle-el, Deion Sanders, Adam Archuleta, Laverneus Coles, John Hall!!, Chad Morton, Brandon Lloyd etc etc etc etc etc etc etc
I don't know. We have had the same needs for years now and have never spent a dime in FA. It just seems to be a bit of desperation this year and you can't help but think that the Giants playing the Patriots in the superbowl wasn't the major reason we did it this year. If that's the case then it's just pathetic.
Excellent post! This is my feelings exactly. The Jets had needs that were not only obvious, but screaming, and they fixed them with good to great players. There were no "marginal" upgrades here... even if they did cost us a fortune to bring in. The only acquisition that we have made so far that could "potentially" be a wash is Kris Jenkins, and that is only if he doesn't adapt to the system well.
We address FA for need, they address FA for names they want because they are there and overpay for them. They are a factor as to why FA has gotten so expensive.
my only concern is whether the weather will effect the chemistry. someone beat me to death with the Are the Jets the new Yankees thread for opening this one.
The Redskins were overspending for a sustained period of time, the Jets on the other hand, have only spent in such a manner this offseason.
Effecting the Chemistry of a 4 and 12 team is a good thing. As it was said in other threads, if the vets are so angry, maybe they should have finished better last season. At this point if Coles had to go, so be it. He is a warrior for sure but is starting to become an often injured one. A big time long trem deal makes no sense for him at this point. The Yanks add big time players to a big time team. We jsut added some very key parts to a very average team at best. This is not the Deadskins or Yanks by any means.
The Jets picked up two offensive lineman - one a HOF'er to be - who have been in the Super Bowl and won the Super bowl. They also picked up a Pro Bowl guy for the interior and a Pro Bowl guy for the outside of their Dline... ...and now a Pro Bowl FB! When you sign winners and don't overpay for "potential" you've done well... Damn, I hope signing these types of players effects the chemistry - and the veterans who are whinning can kiss my AXX!
signing randy moss and asante samuels would have been more of a snyder move... All we did was sign big name guys that we really need at gruntwork positions, which isn't really what the redskins are known for.
No, the Redskins overpaid Randy Thomas - who was a good player for us - but never great - and has never played up to the level of the contract the Skins signed him for. Did they overpay for a kicker? YUP! Did they overpay Coles? YUP!
I agree....I just hope our FA acquisitions stay healthy during the season. Nothing more disheartening then spending a whack of cash, and not getting a return on your investment....especially when the FO is in a "Win-Now" mode.
If you guys dont get above avg play from the QB position....all those moves will be for nothing! The same goes for us and the Fins. Everyone in our division is chasing the Pats, but the Pats are the only team with an NFL QB playing above avg in the AFC East.
which is exactly why i would wheel the #6 to dallas, trade chad, and go with clemens, tui, and flaccco. the bills were better with the 3rd round rookie than losman, and flacco would be around if clemens can't get the job done. tui is a cap-friendly vet insurance policy. you can't justify chad from a cap or ability standpoint. the potential was gone after the raiders playoff game in 2002.
Woody Johnson, faced with being second banana inthe AFC East and now second banana in New York has panicked and replaced the Super Bowl winning Bob Kraft business model with the Dan Snyder business model. He panicked. 1. Kris Jenkins. Lets see, Jet fans rejoiced when Tangini dumped the injury prown clubhouse cancer John Abraham, but now see the new savior, Kris Jenkins. Kris Jenkins has a chronic back injury, was a clubhouse cancer that the Panthers wanted to dump, and he has started less games than John Abraham in the last four years due to injury. 2. Calvin Pace. An invisible first round draft pick for his first four years (8 scaks.. veraging 2 per season) and had 6 sacks in his contract year... How is he any diferent than BRyan Thomas? 3. Damien Woody... He was benched for poor performance by the Detroit Lions last year an inserted as a starter for only the last five games. 4. Alan Faneca. How much does he have left? Pro Football Talk noted that one NFL scout thought it was a bad pick for the Jets as he spent a lot of time on the ground last year. Hand it to the Steelers, they know when to let a formerly great player leave. In the last few seasons they have let such Pro Bowl impact players leave.. Remember Kendrell Bell, Joey Porter and Kimo Von Awful? How did that work out. Jets stink and will untill Woody Johnson sells the team.
1. Kris Jenkins has started the last 32 straight games, has John Abraham ever started 32 straight games? 2. He is just a better football player than Bryan Thomas is, plain and simple. There is just no comparison the way they play the game, retarded comparison(coming from you it doesnt surprise me) 3. Cant argue with this, Woody was the only head scratcher for me. Definetely brings versatilty to the line though. 4. Pro Football Talk also reported that the Steelers offered him the same amount as the Jets did and that he just wanted to leave Pitt. That pretty much kills your theory that Pitt knows exactly when to get rid of a player.. Jets might still stink, time will tell but you are still the worst poster on this sight(which is saying an awful lot)
