Edmonton) The Edmonton Eskimos have signed free agent import defensive back Derrick Strait, the club announced today.

Strait was drafted in the 3rd round (76th overall) of the 2004 NFL Draft by the New York Jets. In two years as a backup defensive back with the Jets, he played in 20 games and record 56 tackles. In 2006, he spent time on the rosters of Tampa Bay, Chicago and Carolina where he saw action in eight games, registering 13 tackles with the Panthers.

Strait started at cornerback all four years at Oklahoma. He is a two-time All-American, a recipient of the 2003 Bronko Nagurski Trophy and the 2003 Jim Thorpe Award his senior season. His five fumble recoveries in a season still stands as a team record.

*Just goes to show you that for those who are concerned about losing a 3rd for Jenkins, we don't exactly have the best track-record when it comes to evaluating and keeping mid-round talent.

  2. Ouch.

Guy just never cut it at the NFL after being very good in college.

Brad Smith can't hold the spit cup for the other two.

The fact that he can line up behind center but can't consistently catch the ball really doesn't impress me much.

  8. Wha? How many other former QB's selected in the 4th round have been as productive as smith has been for us?

I can't tell if you're joking but how many other former QBs selected in the 4th round have there been?

    Yeah --- some real lemons drafted in the 3rd round over the past few years;

    Anthony Schlegel
    Eric Smith
Sione Pouha ---- actually turning out OK
    Derrick Strait
    BJ Askew

  12. I meant compared to other NFL teams. Everybody's too wrapped up in a few dropped passes by Smith. They're forgetting how many big plays he has brought to our O in his first 2 years. He's gonna get better...and I feel like he was a great selection.

Sorry but I'm not on the Brad Smith WR bandwagon yet.

His gadget plays are nothing more than glorified running plays behind center. The one time he did throw a ball, on an endzone fade I believe, I found myself questioning how the guy was ever a QB in college. When he lined up it was no secret as to what would happen next-teams really weren't fooled and this obviously falls on the CS shoulders.

His hands were pretty bad last year, and it was definitely more than a "few" dropped passes-I remember a few in just one game. He's shown nothing to date that would warrant him being any higher than 4 or 5 on a team's WR depth chart. I'd gladly sit Wallace Wright one spot ahead of Smith.

Now if you're talking Brad Smith, special teams ace, I'll buy whatever you're selling.

I think this Brad Smith cant play in the NFL talk is a bit premature. It takes WRs that have played WR their whole lives 3 years until they actually get it. Brad Smith is entering his 3rd year in the NFL and 3rd year of ever playing WR.

It will take at least another year before we know if Brad Smith will ever be good enough to be a full time WR.

Smith needs to at least learn to catch a pass.

When the Jets drafted Miller I thought they were going to have the best CB duo in the NFL

Guess that's why I'm sitting here talking to you guys instead of a GM

In the interest of full disclosure, I campaigned hard for us to draft Strait.(This was in the pre NFL Network days). i thought he was a great tackler for a CB and would work well in Herm's scheme. I didn't realize at the time , Herm didn't have a scheme.
