Well I havent posted in a while but i have been reading all of your posts and I just want to write a little about what has been happening before I go into how I feel about the situation we are going to be going into when April rolls around as of now if thats alright fellow Jet fans. I have said it...I am only a young 19 year old and my dad has brought me to the historic miracle at the meadowlands, the 42-0 thrashing chad pennington/randy thomas post game colts playoff game, and my first game at the age of 10 i had 2 beers poured down my back and fireman ed whose row we got to sit in saw what happened to me and let me lead the jets chant instead of him forever immortalized myself in jets culture i have never seen an offseason like this. i dont know if what we are doing by signing these older veteran FA is going to help our team in the mid run for like 2-3 years but i am hoping it will...veteran leadership can create a unit that helps each other beyond words and thats what hopefully woody and faneca will do. well speaking of the draft, i was never about the jets drafting run DMC but now think about it...we signed pace, we now have 4 LBs to play all our 3-4 LBs positions with some depth, if gohlston is gone....even if he is not, with our upgraded oline why not bring in run DMC...we are only going to have a line this tenacious and overpowering for so long why not have a supertalent and take a chance on him to bring us to the next level instead of a person like gholston who we can trade down or up for next year who will play at a similar level? well id like to hear what you guys think and go J-E-T-S!
So true. I don't know myself if this would be the best option for the franchise..but damn I'd love to see him run behind this line
If the Jets have the opportunity to draft McFadden now and don't they will be burned at the stake. Everything they have done up to now has put them in the position that they really have no other choice. Why do you think they are bringing in backup RBs to try out the past couple of days? I personally don't think he will be as good as Adrian Peterson but even if he's close that will be good enough. With a new OL who maybe can block and a workhorse back that the importance of who plays QB goes away. Pennington can excel with that kind of back as he did when Martin was here. I'm just not sure how big the cap hit would be to trade Jones. All the bonus money he got up front would go against this years and they have already spent a lot in FA and will have to spend a lot more for McFadden.
Nice post BC. This offseason has given us huge options for the draft, I still like Gholston but I think we're going down the draft to solidify the lines and get a glaring need in a quailty WR.
i expect at least 3 or 4 wrs to go in the 1st. and groves might go too due to his insane athleticism. maybe were patching holes to "reach" at 6 and have the WR of our choice. other than the obvious mcfadden, longs, or gholston, id expect a WR or DB. unless they feel poteat is good enough to start and maybe a competition between eric smith and elam at FS
I think the JETS are gambling with Free Agency this year. With a NO CAP season soon approaching, all of the money they are shelling out really won't matter.
Effective pass rushers are harder to find than effective running backs. An RB is still pretty much reliant on the guys blocking in front of him and this is why we shouldn't give up on Jones and Washington. With the line that we have now and Callahan coaching the line, I have no doubt that both Jones and Washington will be far more effective than last year. If the Jets are to be an effective 3-4 team, there has to be some talent and speed off the edges from both sides. Having Pace and Thomas may seem to be enough but in a 3-4 defense, you can never have too much quality depth at OLB. That's why Gholston should still be our man. If not, trade down with an eye on Groves in the 1st round and have Avril as an option in the 2nd.
The only thing I will say is this: What the Jets have done in the FA market is incredible. As far as being prepared for the draft - they are totally prepared. They have the full array of possibilites at their command. They are not locked in to having to do anything. I think this maximizes the opportunity of finding definite talent with the #6 spot or if they have researched it and wish to trade down because they know they will get what they want then I am fine with it. Anybody from the #8 spot on down could trade for the #6 spot. They don't need to use all their picks from this year either. Yes, we would want their 1st round pick this year, but we would probably get their first round pick next year '09, too, and we might even pick up the 3rd round pick we lost for '08. So the trade up possibility by another team is wide open as I see it. In fact, given all the money we just spent, getting future picks for next year is not such a bad idea. If we end up with McFadden or Gholston or a Long I am fine with that, too. Because we came out clear winners in FA, I do not see how we can come out losers in the draft. This FO has gotten us more prepared for the '08 season than I think anyone has ever been able to do in the past given how poor we were last year.
I think the ideal situation if McFadden fell to 6 would be to trade down with the Cowboys to get both of their first rounders. 1, RB is far from a need and the Jets still need a CB, a DE, and a WR. 2, With the line the Jets put together, Jones could probably put up 1500 yards next year, how much better will McFadden really be? 3, The Jets have already spent a boatload of money and by drafting 2 guys late in the 1st they have 2 talented inexpensive players that could replace 2 overpaid veterans. They also don't have to give out that huge salary to the #6 pick. It would be really hard to pass up on McFadden though, especially after watching Peterson last year in Minnesota.
REALLY? Every pundit I've heard says there isn't a WR worth a first round pick. We'll stay where we are unless a BIG deal to jump up comes our way. Remember we pick right before the Pats and we run the same Defense. We're gonna grab a DE and convert him to outside LB
That's a very interesting thought. If it's true it will forever shelve the "Woody is a cheap owner" argument. Paying cash out the way he has is an indication that he really wants to win. And he did it a decade earlier in his ownership than the point that Leon Hess cracked.
