I can't see the Jets selecting Matt Ryan when they have invested the time and energy in Clemens. Clemens is the guy this year....if he screws up....then the Jets go after a QB in the 2009 draft. I don't think CP stays to be the backup....I have a hunch he'll be a draft day trade.....Vikes or Chiefs
They would only use the pick for Ryan if they believe that Clemens isnt the guy for them. I dont know what they are saying behind closed doors. I wouldnt expect them to advertise that they have become disenchanted with him. I'm not saying it will happen- just that it wouldnt shock me.
Ryan won't be there at six anyway...and really, drafting a QB when you don't need one is silly. I love Chad because of his leadership qualities. I feel better with him under center than Clemens. His arm is a HUGE drawback...but frankly if you have a strong running game..you can get around it. Bob Griese didn't have a great arm, but he had Csonka, Kiick and Morris to hand the ball off to. If it were up to me....it's either McFadden or Gholston.
I think were gonna sign Pace so that were not in a bad spot if Gholston is taken earlier than 6- I guess wed take McF then or trade down But itll be interesting what happens if Gholston and McF are both there- I think I like Gholston more
Almost as silly as taking a mediocre TE over Sapp and passing on Ed Reed? We are talking about the Jets! :drunk: I think I am ready to trade the pick if mcFadden is there- its a close call, but I would pass on him. I'd love to get Gholston.
This is difficult to predict. Part of me says that the 2nd to last year in your contract is your do or die season, so Mangini may want to go with Pennington. But for the sake of our future, we need to develop Clemens. My vote went to Clemens.
Right now Pennington because he's a better player. But hopefully Clemens will make some big strides and be good enough to win the job in training camp.
I think that Chad and Kellen should fight it out behind this better OL that we are building. Whoever wins should start, and the other one will be the backup. Let the starter win the job fair and square in all the facets of the offseason. That's a helluva lot more than the pre-season games by the way -- last year Kellen was expected to do everything possible to win the game while Chad was used to conduct experiments with different parts of the offense. Actually, I don't really care who starts, just so long as its the winner between Chad and Kellen in competition with one another. They both have the best chance of anybody available to us to successfully get the most out of the BS offense, in my opinion. Long term, I think that Kellen has to win out over Chad sooner or later -- 3.5 to 4 years is the time frame for a professional QB mastering this level of offense complexity both mentally and physically. The clock's ticking and I hope Kellen does it well.
Chad will never be a back up. He doesnt want it and the Jets should show him more respect. Ship him off for a draft pcik and bring in a guy like David Car who is expecting to be a backup and isnt that bad
Without knowing that Clemens is a good QB? No way. And by the time we do know, midway through training camp at the earliest, it will probably be too late to get a decent backup.
BING! I just wet myself. With everything now starting to happen , neither of the other 2 interest me at all.
I think we'll see what we have from Clemens from the start of the season with a decent O-line, and if he can't get it together by week 10 Chad will be in there, and we will either trade for a young QB or try to aquire a vet next offseason. And I also think that is the way to go.
What Chad wants means about as much as what his contract dictates. Stick your respect in your hat because that's about as much as it amounts to in a billion dollar industry. He is under contract to the Jets, and if they want to continue to pay that contract, then he can either hold out like an idiot, or he can live with the results of his damaged throwing shoulder in training camp. By the way, the David Carr comment is sad, that guy will never even be a decent backup in the NFL. He is shellshocked.
They should battle it out in preseason and whoever performs better in camp and preseason games gets the nod. As of today the better QB is still Chad and it's not close but I expect KC to be alot better going into next year so let them battle it out.
See Plunket. Totally done not just shell shocked absolutely beaten to death and left for dead. The Raiders put his butt down at the end of the bench and let him slowly recover and he ended up with two SB rings.
Go with Clemens and let him prove his worth. It shouldn't take long to see whether he's got it or not.
Voted Clemens. I think it will be an open competition, and I'm hoping Clemens impresses. Coaches will give him benefit of doubt if it is close, as he represents the potential future. If for some reason he doesn't deliver, you go with Chad and make it a priority to draft a QB next year. And if Chad happens to beat him out in competition, so be it. The guy can still definitely play. Just will never be a come from behind explosive type QB which we'd all love to see for a change.
I don't believe you can just pick up a QB and make him an effective backup in the BS offense. Even the most accomplished veteran would take a season to become as good as either Kellen or Chad in the backup role running the BS offense would be.
