The Jets played the most difficult schedule in the league. All of the coin flips that went their way in 2006 evened out in 2007. They were an 8-8 team in 2006, and that's probably about what they were in 2007.
We lost a lot of games in the fourth quarter. Stamina? The offense never held up its end of the bargain and our defense just got beaten down, again and again. The defense continuously played better than the offense. As the season wore on, the offense was consistently attrocious, but the defense gradually improved, in spite of getting absolutely no help from the offense.
Agreed, other than that abortion of a game against Dallas which was over in about 6 minutes, the Jets were in every game this year. Hell, the NE games were pretty close. I know that whole mantra of "You are what your record is" but I truly think the Jets were better than their record indicates.
The Dolphins had plenty of close losses this year but at 1-15 they were without a doubt the worst team in the nfl this year.
I dont think bad is a good word to describe what our season was like last year. UGLY is a better fit. I had season tickets and if you had to sit through the home game against Buffalo you will know exactly what i mean.
I agree. You can't just look at the score and if they are close it means that we were much better than we think. How we were able to play the games and what we brought to the table influenced what other people did to us. The close scores are very misleading. Truth is we were 4-12 and, I think, we absolutely stank. Our offensive line was one of the very poorest I have ever seen the Jets field in the 40+ years that I have been a Jets fan. To me, the play of the offensive line cost us the season last year. Of course the defense had their hand in it, too, but their play did improve noticeably after the bye week. There were a lot of games last year that we were lucky that we were not beaten by more than 20 points. Even though some of the games scores suggest a closer battle, the truth is we were never in most of those games with any credible chance of winning. I will never forget one of the games at the end of the year when we tried to go for it on 4th and 1. Leon or TJ was tackled 2 yards deep and we turned it over on downs. The camera panned to Mangini and you could read his lips, "We can't even get a fucking yard!" That pretty much sums up the season right there.
We were awful last year the only silver lining was Harris and Revis. We were bad, boring almost unwatchable much of the time. Fortunately much of the league is outright awful so at least we were awful and competitive in most games.
I think we were really that bad. Our offense was unwatchable and our defense was offensive. However, I don't think the margin for improvement is as much as some people believe. Year after year you see a "worst to first" scenario and the opposite as well. Look at the Bears. They were HORRIBLE for the few years leading up to their Super Bowl appearance. Then they nosedive again. The NFL is funny. The best team in football did not win the Super Bowl. The champs are a team that was written off after the first part of the season. So as bad as we were last year means nothing. Absolutely nothing. The only thing consistent in the NFL over the past 5-6 years is our beloved Patriots. And even they don't win it all every year. Get hot at the right time and anything can happen. Anything.
Solid post. Shoring up the trenches is going to help a lot, and will make the skill position players look better. We're going to need good QB play to make anything happen next season. The Giants showed what can happen if you get hot and confident at the right time, and if you get coached up real good, anything is possible on any given Sunday.
The essence of a GOOD or GREAT team is to 1. have a winning record and 2. In the games where it is down to the wire, find a way of pulling out that win. The fact that we were 4 - 12 and the fact that in A LOT of those games we held the lead until the 4th quarter and LOST and the FACT that our offense was ranked towards the bottom rung of the league and our rush defense as well, I'd say we were pretty bad. Not all GREAT teams blow all their opponents out week in and week out and in the event the game comes down the the final minutes or seconds they GREAT teams the TRUE contenders find a way to win, NOT a way to blow a game. so YES, WE STANK THE JOINT UP!!! WE WERE THAT BAD. Period, point blank.
We were better than our record, IMO, and I try, after all these years, to not be too much of a sunshiner. We were overconfident in the capability of the O-line minus Pete Kendall or some other capable, experienced Guard (Adrian Clarke was not he answer). This came back to haunt us in an almost unbelievable chain of events. No protection gave way to incredibly poor performance by Chad and begat even lousier performance by Clemens when he took over. This also contributed to a dismal running and passing attack and eventually to piss-poor playcalling because of lack of QB protection and Schotty, quite frankly, not knowing what the hell to do to turn that around. The DEF, in the 2nd half of the season, showed good grit and an ability to hang in there, but that wasn't enough because of the complete breakdown of the OFF, who couldn't SCORE! But the final analysis is... the team didn't quit on Mangini. Not once. They kept on playing no matter what the record, so that says a lot. 4-12? I know that's what the record says we are, but I disagree.
Playing hard and not quitting is not the same thing playing well. The team stunk last season and has the record to prove it.
we were in most games but the problem was the offensive line stunk and pennington and clemens just didnt play well altho that could be a product of the oline
We were definately better than our record. This year we're going to the playoff's baby! and if we continue to play our cards right, more than likely the superbowl.
