As I see the news of our active front office in the early stages of FA, i'm impressed by the aggressive moves MT is making... But, i've seen this before in the Redskins, and as a paranoid Jets fan, i wonder if going through FA and not the draft is the answer we are looking for. I actually trust this FO, unlike Bradway and Herm due to their constant BS... but i feel if we pull a Snyder and drain our resources on only FAs... will it come to bite us in the ass?
I dont think theres any reason to worry. Tannenbaum understands the importance of the draft and his performance last April should make us all feel good heading into this year's draft. He simply understands that by adding 2 or 3 difference makers via trades and free agency, his defense has a chance to be an elite group next season. And this will allow the Jets to compete for the playoffs and compete with the Pats for the division. And the Jets will have the best young core of defensive talent in all of football (Rhodes, Revis, Harris, Gholston). Its a good day to be a Jets fan.
They'll probably be getting a pick back in a D-Rob trade, hard to believe they won't be trading him unless no one bites. Might be hard to get anything higher than a 3 or 4 for him though.
Redskins just give elite money to average players. We're going to give elite money to a still borderline elite player who fills a major need (Faneca). Also, when we trade draft picks, it's for All-Pro caliber talent like Jenkins.
Mangini is in a tough spot. I feel what you're saying as far as the draft is concerned, but Mangini doesn't have that kind of time benefit. He needs the best players possible in place now because his job depends on it. If the Jets spend big this offseason, I think it's a 2 year vote of confidence in Mangini. This is a pretty big offseason for the entire franchise, not just because of the particular players we could be moving, but for the implications it could have down the road. You're right about this FO being superior to the HermWay FO, but the ultimate measure of success is wins on the field, not off it.
Maybe Im alone on this, but I see this off-season being about the Jets competing with the Pats next season. I dont think any moves are going to be made by Tangini to provide them with job security. Theyre gonna be here for a long time, and if Woody was being honest with us, hed tell us the same thing.
It's hard to quantify that. Of course they'll try to compete with the Pats next year, and at the end of the day they're "goal" is to win in 2008. But they know this: their job isn't to win a championship in 2008. It's to show that 2006 wasn't a fluke, and that they're on the right track. They're really acquiring the talent to help them build over the next 2-3 years. They have to look long term, that's another reason for getting the conditional pick. '08 is a building block, going from 4-12 embarrassment back to playoff contender. That conditional pick will be a major part in getting them from playoff contender to the next level when they're ready to make that push, hopefully next off-season.
these these trades and signing...i think the jets are going to be competitive....AND THE PATS KEEP LOOSING PLAYERS!!!
Considering we were swept by the Bills last season, trying to be competitive with the 18-1 Pats would be an awfully big step. Thats the attitude they should have and regardless of there motivation though... filling needs is filling needs. Unless Johnson really doesn't care about the franchise, Mangini would have to be on the hot seat after another poor preformance, if he's able to keep his job at all. Sign Faneca and finish building that nasty D. The D will be the key next season.
These two guys are smart..they regroup and formulate their plan of attack..This year is different from last..they have made the necessary adjustments and our working to get us back in the play offs..Does it involves risks?/ of course, but no risk , no reward..Show me some one who never takes some risks and I'll show you a loser!
Without an elite QB throwing money at older players on O is a mistake. Stay young and put the money in the D to make it an elite unity and build up the O through the draft including a first day QB. The Jenkins move would be a good one, overpaying for Faneca for a mediocre running back and QB to play behind doesn't put us over the top.
Unless the Redskins have the genius to all capoligists , they will have to make alot of room before they can be a force in FA , I'm not sure how close they are to the cap , but they don't have alot of leverage.. Edit Here it is they are over the cap , just. http://www.usatoday.com/sports/football/nfl/redskins/home.htm
